Just my opinon.... I majored in Music, went to grad school for lyrical composition and own about 5000 cds. I love lyrics and the construction of words and how they enhance musical passages. Im a hard rock fan, especially bands that are know for killer lyrics. Tool, Rush, etc. Having said that, i think this is the greatest lyrical composition ever put to music.... I went to school for lyrics and still i dont have the words to describe the genius of this simple song..... bravo ladies.... |

| I bought NEBRASKA they day it came out. I was a little dissapointed because i thought it was gonna be the whole E street band rocking. It is almost ALL acoustic and is the darkest album you WILL EVER HEAR. Needless to say i got over my dissapointment and the more i listened to it the more i became a Bruce fan. this was years ago. This Single song encapsulates the entire feel of the album. It is beautifully dark. I also lived in Atlantic City for 2 years and know everything about it. It is very rich and very very poor and dangerous. ' Dont get caught on the wrong side of that line...'This IS a song about lower class depression and desperation. it is NOT about gambling and casinos...that is just a backdrop for the song. It just goes to show you that a song doesnt have to be complicated to be deep..... | |

Heres a little help... This writing is called 'stream of consciousness'. Alanis and here older producer had worked on it. Basically its writing ( or singing) what your thinking - at the time you are thinking it. This is why all the phrasing doesnt exactly 'fit' and somethings may be ambiguous or sometimes doesnt make sense at all. the couch definately represents the couch in a psychiatrist’s office. who knows which lyrics are exact parts of her life -or which ones are made up or an amalgam. To be honest i dont care. This song is in my top ten of all time. Some songs and poetry are ment to mean different things to different people. This is one of those songs. In my opinion, it is pure genius. The first time i heard it in my car..i pulled over listened to it 4 times in a row..let my mind wonder and cried like an infant.... |

I believe the lyric 'Steal or borrow reefer savior,'..is incorrect....'reefer' shoud be 'reaper'...think about it.... This makes much more sense. The song is about hypocracy and similarities between what is percieved as good and bad. 'liar lawyer -whats the difference'.... |
