Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Dull Life Lyrics 14 years ago
I know this is somewhat unusual for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but does anyone else find this song slightly... political? I mean all that stuff about lies and lying under a beast makes me think of politicians.

This song is about Nico's son, Ari.
The first line is a reference to "My Only Child" (My only child/Be not so blind) which Nico wrote for him.

Cat Power – Nude as the News Lyrics 15 years ago
I knew it had something to do with Patti Smith.
The second time i heard it i related the son thing with the names Jesse and Jackson and i was like "hey wait, aren't those Patti's sons names?"
I thought i t was actually about Patti giving birth to them and being a mother yet still being this famous punk musician.
I had no idea it had to do with Chan Marshall getting an abortion though.

Brand New – The Archers Bows Have Broken Lyrics 17 years ago
So here's what I think:

First of all, Jesse Lacey is a Christian, but that doesn't mean he is a Conservative Christian. And this song does make criticisms against Christians who ignorantly use their religion to condemn others who don't believe what they believe. Which is apparent in the line:
"while you're beating with a book
everyone that book tells you to love"
Not that all or even most Chistians do that, but the fact is that many do.

And the line:
"cause the God i believe in never worked on a campaign trail"
Is a political statement, but from Jesse's point of view, not someone else's. He's saying that he never believed in that he never believed in that idea. It's not necessarily about Bush though but probably a lot of politicians who try to use there religion to control others.

In the lines:
"Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Or do you carry it around just to burn things down?"
He is talking about people who believe in things just for the sake of believing in them, so they will fit in, so they look like better people, etc. instead of finding something that they truly believe in.

I think this song has a lot to do with findind out who you spiritually are and being true to that.

Tori Amos – Space Dog Lyrics 17 years ago
"Where's Neil When You Need Him" is a reference to Neil Gaiman. He and Tori are very close friends, and she references him in many of her songs.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – The Sweets Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about an unrequited love. She's in love with a man who once loved her but is now beginning to fall in love with someone else. I think she is trying to commit suicide by drowning herself in a pool one night, believing that ending her life will save her from her own pain and anger. I think the can represents their old love that used to be filled with sweets of many colors, kind of packed away in a fridge, and slowly it started emptying. When it finally emptied they started playing a symbolic game of kick the can with each other. Kind of a weird interpretation I know but it just makes sense to me

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Dudley Lyrics 17 years ago
I like it and it is kind of original in they're own way, not many people can make a good, interesting rock song out of a lullaby. And let's face it originality petty much doesn't exist anymore anyway, but at least we can try :). But either way this song is obviously about a failed relationship probably about said Dudley. And think the end goes "taper off and I'm moonlight". Poor Dudley . . .

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Way Out Lyrics 17 years ago
I think its about a girl who's getting married but she's not really in love with him, she's just doing it because she thinks it's what she's supposed to do. "Fits around me so tight" might represent the wedding dress or the ring. And I think when she says "I’m way out ... One minute on the inside, you still can’t get to me" she's trying to displace herself and saying that no matter how intimate they get they'll never really be in love. I don't know... it's just an AWESOME song.

Tori Amos – Space Dog Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about two women who were friends early on in life, and when they were teens or something around that area they experimented with drugs together. But now that they're older they're kind of disconnected. One is a housewife living a meager existence, maybe in a trailer park, with a domineering husband; and the other is now reflecting on the past and dreaming of what was and could have been.

Regina Spektor – Après Moi Lyrics 17 years ago
This song has a sort of rhythm that reminds me of a revolutionary march. I believe regina may be mocking Russian totalitarian leaders like Stalin or Lenin pretending she was one of them and had their ideals. The lame (the crippled, the paralyzed, the handicapped in whatever way) are bringing down the fit and healthy who are faster, stronger, smarter. The elderly are bringing down the young and their future, the future of the revolution (souls). The "cold" (i believe this could mean the meek, lonely, or even the individualistic) are taking away from the lifeblood and the passionate conformity of the revolution. Boris Pasternak was a poet during the reign of the leaders of the Russian/Soviet revolution and his ideas and criticisms of them sometimes found their way into his poetry. The poem that the Russian lyrics are taken from has somewhat of an apocalyptic or after-the-war feel to it with a pinch of hope like Begin to Hope's subtle theme. Maybe regina is saying, with words taken from Madame de Pompadour (who is said to have had a premonition of the impending political and social collapse that was that lead to the French Revolution), is that though we can change things for the better we can also change things for the worse.
