Wilco – Reservations Lyrics | 12 years ago |
There is a line between "How can I convince you it's me I don't like" and "When I've always been distant and I've always told lies for love" "Not be so indifferent to the look in your eyes" |
Pixies – Where Is My Mind? Lyrics | 12 years ago |
You make a fine point, arcturus05, but please don't call Kings of Leon "worth listening to." |
Guster – Demons Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Great song. MUCH better live though IMHO. |
Guster – Demons Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Yeah, kind of like how Infinite Jest is a "decent" book. |
The Twilight Sad – I Became a Prostitute Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Totally agreed. The album version is amazing, but the acoustic version sends chills up and down my spine for 4 minutes straight. |
The Velvet Underground – Heroin Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Wait...what the hell happened to the lyrics? |
The Velvet Underground – Heroin Lyrics | 12 years ago |
There are two possible responses to that. I will post them both. 1. Are you fucking serious? 2. Good one. |
Modest Mouse – King Rat Lyrics | 12 years ago |
How does "senseless denial" not fit in? |
Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Cool story bro. Get off your soapbox and get over yourself please. Life is too short to bitch and moan about someone saying what he feels. |
Kurt Vile – Society is My Friend Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Sarcastic, blunt social comment about the negative aspects of human nature. Violence, greed, lust, etc. Fucking amazing song. |
Interpol – The New Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I definitely hear something, but it doesn't sound a bit like "Oh my God." Sounds to me like he's saying "Better days." Not sure why he'd say that and I doubt that's right, but that's what it sounds like to me. |
My Morning Jacket – Dondante Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Good God. When they start playing the song, Jim can barely even keep it together. His voice even cracks a couple times. I think, honestly, if this song was written between the mid-60's and mid-70's, it would be on almost every greatest songs of all time list. |
Sea Wolf – Black Leaf Falls Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Hmm. Sounds like Black Leaf Falls is a place that holds bad sexual/romantic memories for Alex, and he just doesn't want to go back. |
The Wallflowers – One Headlight Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Did you seriously just quote Wikipedia? Really? |
The Wallflowers – One Headlight Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Wow...this song seriously makes complete sense now. |
Interpol – Leif Erikson Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Anyone else notice how the first line of the song stands in direct contrast to the title of the album? Given the sexual angst of this song, I would say that the line/album title dynamic lends itself to a kind of double meaning. It's the last song on the album, so in essence it's saying "Turn out the lights; the party's over." It's also saying that while Interpol (or Tony Banks) likes it (Sex I guess. Or whatever you want really.) with the lights on, it helps the girl in this song when the lights are out. If we're to keep the title of the album in mind during this song, then the narrator and the girl are at odds with one another. Basically they're at a sexual standstill. |
Interpol – The New Lyrics | 12 years ago |
They do sound similar at the beginning. Then the guy starts singing and I immediately mute my computer. |
The Association – Along Comes Mary Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I know it's unbelievably square to be a college student and listen to this music, but Jesus Christ those lyrics. |
The Antlers – Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Anyone else think this sounds like "Jigsaw Falling into Place" by Radiohead? |
The Moody Blues – Beyond Lyrics | 13 years ago |
very, very, very similar track to Pink Floyd's "On the Run." |
Bright Eyes – Ladder Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I'm really not trying to sound dickish, although it will certainly come out that way, but why is it that hardly anyone who submitted the lyrics to this song on any lyric site could recognize that he is saying "estranged"? It's really not that difficult to decipher and I think it's a pretty important line to this song if you believe it's about suicide, which I do. It adds a dimension, that Conor--or the narrator he is speaking as--did something to lose or damage his friendship with the person who took his own life. Maybe it was about becoming more distant ("Gotta get to the center / Gotta get to the concert") a girl ("Run off with a dancer / Gonna celebrate"). In the end I feel like he was trying to make amends ("We'll welcome the new age" and everything after that), but it was too late. To me, Ladder Song not only exemplifies overwhelming sadness; it is also riddled with guilt. |
Vampire Weekend – California English Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Anyone else think this song bears an uncanny resemblance to "Turn Into Something" by Animal Collective? |
Bright Eyes – June on the West Coast Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Does anyone else notice how much this song sounds like "Styrofoam Boots (It's All Nice on Ice Alright)" by Modest Mouse? |
Lynyrd Skynyrd – God & Guns Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Conservatism: Dumb as fuck and proud of it. |
Guster – Airport Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about the movie Inception. Despite the fact it was released 13 years prior. I mean...seriously... |
Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a prequel to Power Out on Funeral? Like...it sounds like Power Out picks up right where this leaves off. |
Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics | 13 years ago |
You know...I think this song is from the point of view of Alexander (from Laika). He was a cold, kind of heartless character in Laika, but here he gives his side of the story; it sounds like he's living a life that his parents don't support (ergo, maybe Tunnels is also from his point of view), and he is telling his younger siblings to wake up before they become totally suffocated, and they have power over their lives. I think it's clear toward the end that he's running away. That's just me. |
Harry Nilsson – Without You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Sometimes feelings for someone become so strong that, over time, they go from new and exciting to mere facts. Nilsson conveys this sentiment amazingly, and that's why his version is so chilling. The first time he sings the chorus, he sings it as if he's reading the weather, which--given that he is threatening to end his own life--is insanely powerful. |
Modest Mouse – The Stars Are Projectors Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"Mankind is made of star stuff, ruled by universal laws. The thread of cosmic evolution runs through his history, as through all phases of the universe" -Harlow Shapley |
The Antlers – Wake Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"Some patients can't be saved, but that burden's not on you. Don't ever let anyone tell you you deserve that." It's as if he's saying "Despite our best efforts, you're going to die. Our hours will be meaningless, but that isn't your fault." And holy fuck I am crying like a three year old right now. |
Modest Mouse – Guilty Cocker Spaniels Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm sorry. For a second there I thought I read "corny song like Trailer Trash." |
Modest Mouse – Wild Packs of Family Dogs Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't want to post spoilers about a story, so I will just pose the question: Does anyone else see a huge similarity between the end of this song and the end of "Revelation" by Flannery O'Connor? |
Hope of the States – Black Dollar Bills Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is one of the most astonishing pieces of music I've heard in quite some time. I think it's about failed politics. I don't know what Hope of the States were. The ambiguity of their political stance--be it liberal, conservative, anarchic, communist, fascist, whatever--adds to the darkness; it may be a commentary on Bush or Blair, or it could just be a hypothetical story. Either way, the first verse recalls "You and Whose Army" by Radiohead; it sounds defeated but the message is extremely tough guy-ish: You're a ruler but you're not my ruler. The last verse is actually kind of optimistic. Hope and dreams are failing but there is a new hope on the horizon ... very prophetic with regard to the United States. |
Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The finest suburban local hash my good man. Don't hate! |
Jonas Brothers – When You Look Me In the Eyes Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think this song is about how the Jonas Brothers need to just finally take their paycheck and get the fuck out of the music industry before further insulting anybody with a lick of taste. |
Modest Mouse – Willful Suspension of Disbelief Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Is the riff the same as the one played at the end of The Stars Are Projectors? It sounds like it, but a little distorted (intentionally, obviously), so I'm not sure. |
Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Oh, and this is the best Bob Dylan song not in any way affiliated with Bob Dylan. |
Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Nevermind. I saw in your profile you're a woman. Therefore I should have said "Narcissistic bitch". And as you'll see, I'm not the only one who read terrorism in the lyrics. |
Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I sure am, for having an interpretation of a song. Narcissistic asshole. |
Modest Mouse – What People Are Made Of Lyrics | 15 years ago |
That's a really good point that got me thinking. Since This Devil's Workday also revisits the barren wasteland theme: "Well let's take this potted plant to the woods and set it free I'm gonna tell the owners just how nice that was of me" against this: "By then it was too late And you wound up on an island of shells and bones" I think that This Devil's Workday is kind of a prequel to this. The narrator of this song is kind of a narcissist, while that of TDW becomes one in the end. |
Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics | 15 years ago |
After listening to a stoner, jamming, epic record like TLCW, listening to a song this short, sweet, beautiful, and heart-melting just floored me. I think it is about consequences of greed; the first verse indirectly about Jesus' crucifixion after Judas gave him away; the second about the insiders on Wall Street who sell off their stocks a day before they hit the skids and what this does to the people who bought them; the third about maybe doing something like committing adultery or swearing or something else that is harmless, and how you have to spend an eternity in Hell for doing them; I don't know about the fourth: Maybe it's about becoming a big rich, well-educated exec or the like and how you pretty much lose your soul when you turn into one. This would have devastating effects on your friends, family, and employees; the final about prematurely splitting up, and how that affects both people who are still in love. |
Modest Mouse – Wild Packs of Family Dogs Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it's about a fight between a family, and Isaac not wanting to get involved. "A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard one day My father got his gun, shot it up, they ran away okay" A problem in the family comes up somehow. Dad just explodes on everybody (kind of like the SNL skits with Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, and the girl), making the entire family go silent. "A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard And as my own dog ran away with them I didn't say much of anything at all Didn't say much of anything at all Didn't say much of anything at all" The narrator has some problems with everything too, but he doesn't want to get in the middle of it. "A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard As my little sister played The dogs took her away And I guess she was eaten up, OK Yeah, she was eaten up, OK My mother's crying blood dust now My mother's crying blood dust now My mother's crying blood dust now" Little sister gets so angry that she leaves/ignores/disowns the family, or becomes so angry at everyone that she doesn't even recognize them anymore. Mother (stereotypically the most compassionate) becomes heartbroken. "My dad, he quit his job today Well, I guess he was fired but that's OK And I'm sitting outside by my mudlake Waiting for the pack to take me away" Maybe dad's problems start interfering with his job. Now that he's lost his job, the narrator is finally getting pissed enough to tell dad what he really thinks. "And right after I die The dogs start floating up towards the glowing sky Now they'll receive their rewards Now they will receive their rewards Yeah, they will receive their rewards" The narrator was, for some reason or another, the problem all along. After he dies, the problems/him, go to heaven. |
Radiohead – Pyramid Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
thebadguy: Sometimes on songmeanings.net, there's one interpretation that makes me have an epiphany, that makes me say "THAT'S IT!" You just did that for me. |
Wilco – The Late Greats Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I know I'm in the minority with loldoctor, but I think that this song is ironic. A Ghost is Born is so abstract and surreal that finishing it with a really by-the-numbers, concrete structure and meaning just doesn't seem plausible. |
Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's about REVOLUTION! I love it! And I think it's about revolution in the direct aftermath of revolution "And it's true we named our children After towns that we've never been to And it's true that the clouds just hung around Like black Cadillacs outside a funeral" -Church/state/teachers/police had conformed us to the point that we don't even think about it anymore. "And we were done, done, done With all the fuck, fuck, fucking around" -That's it. We were tired of this shit. Everybody got their guns. "You were so true to yourself You were true to no one else Well, I should put you in the ground" -President/King/Religious leader/Police chief: You were so vile and so untruthful to us and now we have to do what's best for us, not you. "I've got the time I got the hours I got the days I got the weeks I could say to myself I've got the words but I can't speak" -You can win your battles, but sooner or later, this is gonna happen and we're gonna be calling the shots. "Well I was done, done, done With all the circ, circ, circling around" -(See first few lines) "I didn't die and I ain't complaining, I ain't blaming you" -I was willing to die for my cause, but that's cool. We're gonna be more powerful than you in the long run anyway. "I didn't know that the words you said to me Meant more to me than they ever could you" -Those lies you told to me are the reason I've put you in this predicament. "I didn't lie and I ain't saying I told the whole truth I didn't know that this game we were playing Even had a set of rules" -I've propagandized everybody in our rebellion. "We named our children after towns That we've never been to And it's true that the clouds just hung around Like black Cadillacs outside a funeral" -(See first few lines) "And we were laughing at the stars While our feet clung tight to the ground" -For the first time, we scoffed at authority... "So pleased with ourselves for using so many verbs and nouns But we were all still just dumb, dumb, dumber Than the dirt, dirt, dirt on the ground" -...even though our minds were infiltrated with what they told us. "Well, wings on flames" -God's on our side. "Kings with no names Well, this place just ain't got air right now" -We're gonna have to deal with anarchy for just a little while, and then a crudely designed government, but it'll all be good soon. "You were so all over town but still Crayola brown Well, you should run around yourself right now And we were done, done, done With all the fuck, fuck, fucking around, circling around" -We dragged you (either dead or humiliated) through the streets in this city (Crayola brown = mud?). We told you we were done fucking around earlier. Now you understand we mean it. |
Flight of the Conchords – Leggy Blonde Lyrics | 15 years ago |
When Jemaine sang that final part, it was over for me. I was rolling on the floor, completely disarmed. |
Modest Mouse – Parting of the Sensory Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'm sorry, but those indecipherable words are driving me nuts. This is all speculation 1:12: Leave it all at the exact same spot 1:27: Get around a hole, the hole I walk 1:41: Could I come and leave a fucking note to the same damn spot? 1:49: You were supposed to run all them spots 2:26: I put my chips there in all the spots 2:33: A full day's ride to the same damn spot 2:41: The parting of the sensory 2:49: You get out 3:04: Get outta here to those spots 3:10: Who the hell made you the boss? 3:17: You came out here to fuck it up Regardless of the accuracy--which I doubt--I find it political. Maybe that wasn't the intention...but all the lyrics fit, from the 2000 election ("We placed our chips in all the right spots...but still lost") to the 2004 ("A full year trip to the exact same spot"). And for the record, the Beatles denied that Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds was a drug song; Barry McGuire denied that Eve of Destruction was a protest song. Hendrix denied that Purple Haze was about LSD...just cuz Isaac Brock says you don't need to write a political song to know how godawful Bush is doesn't mean this wasn't. |
Modest Mouse – One Chance Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The second to last song on GNFPWLBN; I think it kind of opened the door for their next album, especially the first song on it. You cope with a ton of rough times, you try making sense of it all...the sense never comes. I think the entirety of We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was an overt sequel to this song (and The Good Times Are Killing Me too), a massive effort to find a meaning, and gaining none. |
Longpigs – On And On Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Agree with drucifer23. In what would typically be a serene, cutesy little song, Crispin Hunt nearly YELLS how much he needs this chick. |
Barry Mcguire – Eve Of Destruction Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Ha, I remember hearing the beginning of this song on a songs from Vietnam CD infomercial. It sounded really peaceful so I gave it a listen. It ended up being the most angry snarl I ever heard. Awesome, awesome freakin' song that we still need to listen to today. |
