Paul Simon – Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes Lyrics 15 years ago
Sometimes I wish this site was focused more on soliciting the input of people who actually have heard from a reputable source what the meaning of a song is. Otherwise its pretty much just uniformed conjecture. Lyrics can be so cryptic if the songwriter is expressing something deeply personal to the world. Catfishjohn is probably the closest to getting it right.

Massive Attack – Live With Me (feat. Terry Callier) Lyrics 16 years ago
A man growing older, realizing his own mortality, trying to get over his fear of committment. He's mistreated his girl because he's been unhappy with his own life. She has given up on him, now he regrets the decisions he's made and wants her back but it looks like he's too late. Desperation time.

Massive Attack's original version is much, much better, if you haven't heard it yet.

The Twilight Singers – Teenage Wristband Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the opening is closer to Vanessa Carlton's "1000 Miles" than "Baba O'Riley," but a good song nonetheless despite a bad mixing job.

Supertramp – Give A Little Bit Lyrics 17 years ago
Clearly Freddie is just taking the piss. BTW, "the man with the lonely eyes" is Roger Hodgson himself not Jesus, you bible thumper!

Supertramp – Even In The Quietest Moments Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always felt that Roger Hodgson was plagued with depression. His songs often refer to the rain, the sun disappearing, tears, and cold. He is always yearning for a happiness that someone else can provide him. Great, epic song with tremendous feeling.

Don Henley – New York Minute Lyrics 17 years ago
Go f*%$ yourself. If you want to trick your brain into thinking this song has relevance to 9/11, no one will stop you but you will be WRONG. Its all self-absorbed Henley here and nothing else. Regardless, 9/11 is just a drop in the bucket compared to the damage we've wrought on foreign countries in the name of commerce and imperialism. Here's a tissue, you ethnocentric putz.

The Who – Eminence Front Lyrics 18 years ago
Pete had much opportunity to observe the wealthy and powerful up close, and clearly could see that although on the outside these people seem superior and more blessed than the rest of us, underneath it is often the opposite case. Often their success has been achieved in an effort to get away from low self-esteem, self-hatred, loneliness, etc., and underneath the veneer of superiority lives a scared little child.

Don Henley – New York Minute Lyrics 18 years ago
This doesn't really have much relevance to 9/11. Henley was looking back at his own life at the time and seeing how his failure to commit to someone and a family in this harsh world had only brought him despair. Pretty good song for coming out of the '80s, and I'm glad Don eventually settled down.

Pink Floyd – What Do You Want from Me Lyrics 18 years ago
Its "Play these strings until my fingers are raw".
I love the dirty funk mixed with blues in this song. My feeling has always been that this was partly about Waters, because in the years prior to the album coming out there had been a legal case about use of the band name without Waters.

The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics 18 years ago
The melody of this song is based on a version of "The Last Time" by the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra (ALO was the Stone's manager). In fact, the Verve had to hand over 100% of their songwriting royalties! Good song - too bad Richard Ashcroft is a pompous, egotistical, pretentious twit.

Harry Nilsson – Remember (Christmas) Lyrics 18 years ago
Very poignant song, which seems to be about the importance of looking back to a time of childhood innocence when the world was a place of mystery and endless opportunity. I can picture it being directed towards adults who are miserable all caught up in the banality of everyday life. Another title is Remember (Christmas Joy).

Nick Drake – Man In A Shed Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song from Nick's life. He was in love with a girl in that whimsical, self-loathing way the the English middle/upper class are so good at. However, she thought Drake was too weird and sensitive, and rejected him.

Nick Drake – Black Eyed Dog Lyrics 18 years ago
The Black Eyed Dog is depression. This analogy has been used by others in the past. Here, the dog is familiar to Drake as the singer has experienced recurrent episodes of depression in the past and is dreading its inevitable return. Drake had a depressive mentality and in this song seems to be experiencing angst over the thought of aging, death, and loss.

Placebo – Without You I'm Nothing Lyrics 18 years ago
Aside from the psychobabble, this song has one of the most dramatic, powerful outros ever. The way the bass and the guitar complement each other is killer!

Placebo – Without You I'm Nothing Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about insecurity and one-sided relationships. When one is insecure about their worth to others and their potential to be truly loved, it leads to over-dependence, clinginess, and a sense of emptiness inside when a relationship begins to go south. Commonly seen in individuals with abusive or neglectful upbringings.

This song is very effective in creating a mood of claustrophobia and dispair, like a bad trip.

Matthew Sweet – Sick Of Myself Lyrics 18 years ago
Great pop, but the lyrics provide the explanation why Sweet is as popular as his talent deserves - few people respect a grown man who acts like a shy, self-loathing adolescent girl!

The Jam – Strange Town Lyrics 18 years ago
Weller must have been visiting all the wrong places as a kid, or else he was a mouthy bugger. Killer baseline, and love those harmony vocals on the chorus!

Kanye West – Through The Wire Lyrics 18 years ago
I will also add that like many hip-hop artists Kanye is not as much a musician as a producer/sampler. Download Chaka Khan's "Through the Fire" and listen to the last third of the song - all of the melody of TTW is there, minus the annoying chipmunk voices. All Kanye contributes is his weak and poorly-respected raps.

Kanye West – Through The Wire Lyrics 18 years ago
"he has a reason to be cocky. what rappers do you know who have an inferirity complex?"
Actually, cockiness is often a sign of insecurity, and I've read a few interviews with Kanye where he seems like his whole world is built around fame and being popular. If peeps are pompous pricks its usual because deep down they don't value themselves very much.

XTC – King For A Day Lyrics 18 years ago
Clearly its about the lust for fame at any cost that plagues many people in the entertainment industry. People lose sight of what is truly important and think that fame and success, however brief or shallow, will make them happy. However, "the ladder gets longer, and ambition gets stronger, I can't satisfy the hunger, that bad old moon has got you in its sway, to be king for a day."

Porno For Pyros – Pets Lyrics 18 years ago
I remember when I first heard this song I was blown away by how profound it was. Now it doesn't have the same effect on me but I still think it does a great job of conveying how we humans have an over-inflated sense of our cosmic importance despite the fact that in many ways we are petty, insignificant and small.
