Stone Temple Pilots – Lounge Fly Lyrics 7 years ago
I like STP, I like this song, and it relates. I'm pretty sure I know what STP's talking about. It's about that smart chick who knows she's got the guy on her finger and can play with his emotion. He's just buzzing with heart-felt emotion, and he's horny for her like nothing else, and so, this woman's got a a fly to play with.

Okay, guys (and I'm talking to you, fellow passionate, horny gentlemen), it's time to deal with STP's obvious reference to emotional dependency and pain due to craving for sex and a woman's play over our emotions, as clearly indicated by "you always refuel me" and "pins in me, you kill me".

"I feel I'm sinking but you wont let me drown me I wanna fuck I wanna fuck but do you need me."

For all the horrible things men absolutely do to women (and which don't seem to make it into songs so often, probably because they're much, much, much WORSE, like rape and torture), we still are emotional "flies" stuck in that sweet, sweet trap...

And then, some women--the ones not tortured or raped, and who kind of like getting fucked good by guys who adore them soooooo much, but are still kind emotional play toys--just fool around with our feelings. Women get battered, and raped, and trapped in much worse situations, but for many men, we just get emotionally "tortured" because our our emotional-sexual cravings.

But it still sucks when a savvy, sexy lady plays with our inborn nature to love and adore them. And then we realize that woman doesn't just want to be our dominated woman. She wants to be everything emotionally: "She said she'd be my man
She said she'd be my woman"

This is not about homosexuality (not that there's anything wrong with it, and I'm sure the same sexual-emotional power-play occurs in those situations), but rather that "she"--this woman who's as bad as some guy who abuses his women--wants to dominate our emotional needs.

So this song in both words and mood of music captures this recurring emotional tension. And despite STP's warning, it'll happen again and again and again to hopeful, needy, loving, but vulnerable men (but not to me again since I've been there, done that, and settled down with the woman who feeds me and doesn't need to torture me. Find such a lady, gentlemen, and you'll be lucky in life...).

Tom Waits – Kommienezuspadt Lyrics 9 years ago
The song is used in a scene early in the animated movie "Idiots and Angels" by Bill Plympton in 2008. The jumpy grumbly song is perfect for Plympton's surreal animation when a man in a bar sexually harasses a pretty lady cleaning the floor, and then in a scuffle, he gets bitten and beaten by her in retaliation.

Men at Work – Upstairs In My House Lyrics 9 years ago
I have listened to this song since I was 13. It has always sounded delicious... And Colin Hay's voice sweetly pushes the feeling,

It felt like the lyrics describe, looking out over the boardwalk with people, with red sky as the evening closes... It's a dream I wish I could have every day. It's simple enough, but how many people have it...?

Man, I wish I had that home, lived there to the end my days... Dreamy, the way everyone's life should be...

Butthole Surfers – Cherub Lyrics 9 years ago
The studio version is clear, kick-ass, a fine version. The Surfers' live versions on Youtube are also fun. But this video clip captures that nightmare version (Gibby going from accountant to running naked in public), playful nightmare, having fun, but just on the edge of society, Butthole Surfer style.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ3S29NT3t4

It's Texas psycho-punk at it's best. When Gibby screeches through the megaphone into the mike, it's heavenly hell. Paul screeches through his guitar, eyes closed, head shaking, a shaman.... The lyrics are meaningless beautiful cacophony, cherub angels, bullshit. It's beautiful insanity, beautiful insanity, beautiful insanity. Tasty.

When I watch this, when I play this song loud, I forget everything else. It's a nightmare, but I'm on top. I'm the fucker, not the fucked...

And I laugh out loud, crazier, louder than the other fuckheads...

Shut up! Shut UUUUUUUUUPPPPPP!!!!!!

City and Colour – Forgive Me Lyrics 9 years ago
This is about many people, both men and women. We cannot pretend that we will not see others as worthy of adoring. Some people can focus on one person for their entire lives, but for many, it is natural, inherent to see the beauty in some of the other sex and be infatuated by them.

This song is about those who have the blessing and the curse of being able to love more than one person at the same time. Love alone does not prevent us from experiencing desire of others who tempt our hearts...

Smash Mouth – Stoned Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a fun song. I like Smash Mouth's psychedelic-pop-rock, with hints of Reggae. In their song, they basically say "I relax, I have freedom to choose myself, it's harmless. Hypocrites who aren't happy complain about it. Clinton made it mainstream, acceptable." They say what many millions of people already know, except some government people wasting time...

So those are nice ideas from pre-2000. Now, we know Obama tried it because it's not dangerous (SAFER than hard liquor (can't overdose on pot, but every year, thousands from liquor...)), like so many competent people. How many people should go to PRISON for smoking pot? How many people's lives should be RUINED for this?

Thanks, Smash Mouth, for making a fun song that tells people to let pot smokers relax and enjoy. The worst that will happen is they'll eat too much, sleep a little more, and, yeah, have unhealthy lungs, just like tobacco smokers...

Butthole Surfers – Who Was In My Room Last Night? Lyrics 12 years ago
There's no confusion here: this is the Butthole Surfers. They drink and do drugs heavily, like me. They get fucked up, fucked up, fucked up...

This is about being really fucked up. You're in your bedroom, but you don't really know where you are. Maybe you're with someone, boyfriend, wife, whatever, but maybe you're alone. It doesn't matter because in your so fucked up brain, you don't know what's happening...

I like that part about "because someone had moved the door." You're so fucked up that you don't know where the door is.

THE MEANING ABOUT THIS SONG IS ABOUT BEING MESSED UP IN THE HEAD AND NOT REALLY KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND YOU, AND MOST LIKELY, YOU WON'T REMEMBER IT ANYWAYS...

This is Butthole Surfers' fucked up experiences, just like many of us...

Butthole Surfers – Cherub Lyrics 12 years ago
The lyrics matter little... It's the sound and feel of the music. Hayes' laughs and screams make this a beautiful nightmare...

This is the best version of the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz6VMmEYOso. It's the most psychedelic, surreal one. It's angels, and visions of naked dead bodies, and a lost mind... You've lost it and are running, painted blue and naked, through Grand Central Station...

Stone Temple Pilots – Vasoline Lyrics 12 years ago
Someone before wrote about masturbation. Maybe, but I think this song is about being stuck to some woman. We're just "flies in the Vaseline." MEN ARE STUCK TO WOMEN. We fly around until the good stuff hooks us, and then we can't escape.

But it's dark: women know they have this power. They know we can't escape. They say we are the one's giving them sorrow, but in fact, they can just stop giving us "pleasure," which makes us desperate flies, and so we fly back to the sticky stuff, and eventually, we're stuck physically and emotionally.

We crave it, but in the end, it tastes like nothing...

Jane's Addiction – Been Caught Stealing Lyrics 12 years ago
I STOLE PLENTY WHEN I WAS YOUNG. THOSE RICH MOTHER FUCKERS DON'T KNOW SHIT. I took what I wanted, what I needed. I was poor, fucking poor. I was 15 when I started. I walked in and took the shit: clothes, food, books, tapes, whatever. What was I gonna do? Wait until some rich fucker thought it was okay to give me something I wanted or needed? They were NEVER going to be poor as a result of what I did. They could put me in jail, but it wouldn't do a thing for them.

And then I started working in my "regular" career. What can I say. I took some stuff, things that those companies won't miss. They won't ever notice what was missing. They can read this message, but they won't ever be able to say what's missing.

And so I'm a stealing fucker. But nobody will ever notice...

It's just as simple as that...

The Who – 5:15 Lyrics 12 years ago
I can see that some of the previous entries (years ago now!) touched on youthful frustration. Yes, that's exactly what this song is about. Emotional frustration, sexual frustration (prettier women...), abandonment, life... As one commenter noted, frustration doesn't go away when you get older; it just changes.

I have to admit that the Who were often underrated in their musical artistry. This song is an excellent example of both technical and artistic composition. This is not just plain pop garbage; it's finely orchestated music, as they did later in Tommy and so on. And all that orchestral music and vocals in this song capture the essence of being lost and frustrated with life.

And now I'm going to go to a bar, get drunk, and stumble around alone in the city. Maybe I'll take the bus, out of my brain, and watch the city and the inaccessible pretty women go by...

Good night!

Boards of Canada – An Eagle in Your Mind Lyrics 13 years ago
To me, this song is exactly what the title suggests: an eagle in my mind. This is a spirit in our mind, flying over the world. It is both mysterious and inspiring, a vision of birds in our subconscious or our imagination, spiritual encouragement...

Boards of Canada – Open the Light Lyrics 13 years ago
As usual, this has that dreamy 70s TV feel in it. But also as usual, they selected a bittersweet feel. It feels both uplifting and melancholy. There's a sense of longing in it, like the kind of joy we want in life but which is just out of reach...

Iron & Wine – A History of Lovers Lyrics 13 years ago
They fuck us, and we come back for more. They cut us, and we come back for more. We're ready to kill those "bastards" who get in the way, but of course, "she" has already made her decision, so you might as well shut and let her go do what she wants, go where she wants, with whoever she wants... She's not evil: it's just her nature to want what she wants.

Ah, men, men, men. It's not just our dicks, of course. It's our hearts, our foolish hearts that make our lives miserable.

We're all just looking for happiness, however we can find it...

A Perfect Circle – Magdalena Lyrics 13 years ago
"josaman" missed the point. I wasn't talking about strippers. I was talking about a regular woman. I'm talking about a woman in life that makes us take chances for them.

Sometimes in life, a woman (as can a man) have intense power over another's heart... That power makes the other symbolically beg...

The Cure – Us or Them Lyrics 13 years ago
6 years with no comments on this cool song, fantastic for sound alone... I'm sure the political views are there in this song, but I can tell you this song, to me, is straightforward, about male-female relationships that happen sometimes. And men are the losers in these cases...

She's gorgeous, and we get her on our minds. She likes us too, but she's not reliable emotionally. She plays, she fluctuates emotionally... Then she makes us feel great, fantastic... And then she spends time on other things, and suddenly, we're not too important... But how can we stop wanting her, how can we stop wanting her... And so she becomes part of our daily mental routine...

And so her fucking world is my head. I can't get her fucking world out of my head. And there's some part of her that says no, that I should get my fucking mind out of her world...

Well written songs should be ambiguous so that many parts of life overlap...

Electric Light Orchestra – Twilight Lyrics 14 years ago
The music apparently caught someone; the Japanese animame folk became captured in "Twilight" (see the Wikipedia entry). Regarding the meaning, the album may have had it's theme (as noted in the third entry above), but it's obvioulsy a metaphorical song. ELO is all about metaphor and passion. The first commentor waaaaay back in 2006 hit it on the nail; Jeff Lyne is writing about passion for a woman who controls his desire. This "twilight" is the kind of thing that dominates men, and women (like "Evil Woman") can disappear and destroy that loving joy (though of course, men can do that to women too...). In this case, "Twilight" is that unreal desire, but it's not permanent sometimes. Of course, the difference between "twilight" and people is that twilight always happens; you can't get it back. But people can decide how they'll act towards another who is enamored with them.

THE WEAKNESS OF MEN
This song can be interpreted as the sexual power that women sometimes have over men. Sometimes, there is a woman that men are ready to risk their current relationships--their girlfriends, wives, children--to get. We crave not just the sex, but also the emotional passion that such an "earthly goddess" offers, that we can get that powerful satisfaction that we crave but which is so hard to find. We are ready to take tremendous risks for it. We see her and want her in a way that goes beyond sanity, so we are ready to symbolically throw down the "dollar," and "sell our souls," sometimes to the extreme, to get that "one kiss, one taste."

I suspect there are others out there who might have experienced this...

Soundgarden – Jesus Christ Pose Lyrics 14 years ago
A SONG ABOUT MANIPULATION
This song is clearly NOT religious; Jesus is the symbol exploited by OTHERS, not Chris Cornell. I agree with the ideas expressed in previous posts that this is about those who claim to be martyrs to be superior, a kind of manipulation. Sure, the song could have been written about advertising models, but I think it has a more general interpretation, one that could be clarified with an example.

HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION
Let me give hypothetical situation. This song could represent a woman who claims to be suffering, who claims to need you, but at the same time seems to be superior to you. She holds our her arms compassionately, but really, she has intentions of control, telling you what to do, what feel. We feel sympathy for her, and we give in to her demands, but she really has other goals. She uses her seemingly vulnerable situation to get us to do things we might not otherwise do.

I suspect there are others out there who've experienced this kind of manipulation...

The Beatles – Dear Prudence Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of the most spiritual songs by the Beatles (primarily John), and I think it goes beyond what it was originally connected to (the Farrow business). The music feels like sunrise, mystical spiritualism. It feels like what a good religion should make people experience.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 18 years ago
This song means that we are all fucked up. We can feel like we can rule the world, but it's all a lie. We think that we can do wicked, cool things, but then we wise up and see that we can't really do anything.

Even though the lyrics are written "And I learned that I was a liar, Just like you ", in fact, when he sings it, he sings "I learned that I was a liar, the day I tried to live just like you". I think that means that he is trying to live like someone else and realizes he is just a phony, fucking liar. He's right. Don't try to be a god damn phony.

Soundgarden – Head Down Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about oppressive governments or maybe oppressive groups in a society. It's about communist governments putting down the heads of its people even though they secretly smile. The governments keep trying to keep the heads down and keep them from having happiness. Eventually they torture them to steal the smiles from their face. It's like Vietnam; the government wants everyone to be miserable, and they'll do anything to keep the heads of its people down.
