John Lennon – Working Class Hero Lyrics 17 years ago
This song doesn't seem like it's about class or social status...I think he's criticizing the rat race of life that's often associated with capitalism...

...although half of the things that these posters have been criticizing has nothing to do with capitalism or is just outright untrue. With free trade and "exploiting" foreign labor, the issue only comes up when you get government subsidized mega corporations and organizations like the WTO only enforcing protectionism for industrialized nations. In true capitalism you have neither subsidies nor protectionism, and everyone is paid the real price of their labor.

Capitalism means government stays out of business; what we have in the western world is not really capitalism, it's corporatism and it's bordering on communism. That's what you have when the government spends billions on what are often state-owned corporations (Halliburton, GE, Chevron, ABC, Westinghouse, Wal-Mart...)

Btw I'm not poor at all and all of these themes resonate with me. This song is about pressure and alienation more than it is about poverty.

Green Day – Basket Case Lyrics 17 years ago
Green Day's best song ever.

It's not by Avril Lavigne, who covered it. That's just plain stupid and makes me cry for society.

Green Day is not a punk band...and if you think they are, you're probably not punk either. Not that it's a bad thing...punk is just a commie subculture filled with angry suburbanites that are too lazy to read books, and would much rather just use fatalistic music and their little "scene" to vent frustration at the "capitalist machine" that they don't even understand. Punk musicians have been plenty smart (Dead Kennedys, DOA, to name a few...) but their scenes are like anything else filled with mindless easily manipulated children: stupid. I'm glad Green Day isn't part of it, at least not anymore...although doing this whole political aesthetic is somewhat damning of their music. If I wanted to hear social criticism, I'd listen to Anti-Flag or Immortal Technique or something, or better yet, read a book. I'd rather listen to songs about dealing with being pissed off, masturbating, or hating my parents.

Basket Case is the song that first got me addicted to Green Day. He's singing about anxiety problems and panic attacks. The video was filmed in an abandoned mental institution, and makes frequent references to the film version of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, a novel pertaining to authority's manipulation of the individual, the faults of collectivism, the inherently diminutive nature of society...but most of all, mental health.

The song lyrics are pretty straight forward, and although many a fatalist will tell you that's not poetic, the fact that he's straightforward makes the song all the more charming; when dealing with anxiety issues, the mind is in a state of disorder, and being straightforward is very soothing.

As for the "sex" and "whores" part, I'm not sure. They probably pertain to Armstrong's own experiences. Maybe the "whining" thing is about how his obsessive tendencies are noticed by others, who accuse him of exaggerating his problems.

Slipknot – No Life Lyrics 17 years ago
^^^^ I somewhat doubt that's true because Slipknot doesn't seem to have any political songs, but he does mention "Chuck D" from Public Enemy...

Slipknot – No Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I think he's talking about the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land:

"house arrest" -- the curfews;
"suicide; the motherfucker's on self-destruct" -- the suicide bombings by angry Palestinians
"hard life is hard as hell" ; "this is no kind of life" -- life under occupation
'Americult" -- the financial support the "free" world gives Israel, including its churches
"Never had peace so I had to fight" self explanatory
"the freedom is never in sight" -- Israel is described as a democracy despite its illegal occupation

I dunno. At first I thought it was just a song where he was expressing anger over invalidation and bullying and a social atmosphere of disapproval, but then I started looking at specific lines...

I have no idea how Slipknot feels about that conflict but that's what I thought.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Rhinoceros Lyrics 18 years ago
i'll take a guess at the meaning...

the person has a deep dark secret, and he wants to tell the person he's talking to, because he's having the greatest time ever with her, and she already knows him so well...but he's been trying not to tell...
and then when it says "open your eyes/to these must I lie?" that means he cannot keep the secret because he loves her or something.

I think it's like that. But I could be wrong.

Anti-Flag – The Project For A New American Century Lyrics 18 years ago
"The Project for a New American Century" (PNAC) is a neoconservative think tank that lead us into the war with Iraq and preaches western hegemony...global domination. Among these neocons are Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz, who have positions in the Bush Administration. They support the use of military force to topple any government that is not appealing to the neoconservatives. They are a face of globalism, and they lead us into the war for the sake of profit from things such as military profiteering as well as oil.
