Jason Mraz – God Rests in Reason Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Well I do believe I understand this song now. I read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran and "God Rests In Reason" IS this book. The verses are often word for word taken from the text. There's a chapter about reason and passion that says this: "Among the hills, when you sit in the cool shade of the white poplars, sharing the peace and serenity of distant fields and meadows--then let your heart say in silence, 'God rests in reason.' And when the storm comes, and the mighty wind shakes the forest, and thunder and lightning proclaim the majesty of the sky,--then let your heart say in awe, 'God moves in passion.' And since you are a breath in God's spere, and a leaf in God's forest, you too should restin reason and move in passion." That about sums up the book and the song, I think. |
Jason Mraz – 0% Interest Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is definitely at the top of the list of Jason's songs in my book. The lyrics (as in almost all of his songs) are so intricate and deep and meaningful. In this song, there are so many hidden meanings in this song that Jason is probably the only one who fully understands all of its intricacies. Overall, I agree that the song is about growing up and the times spent hanging out with friends, how those times got him through the hard times in his life. I see a lot of biblical references in the the song. "The laws of eden," obviously referencing Adam and Eve with the original sin. His childhood, like Eden, was once uncorrupted and beautiful, though sheltered ("Our lives they were sheltered then.") But then the "monsters" of adulthood came upon him, and just like the sin in Eden, his world was changed forever. "The rock of Gibraltar" reference relates to the motif of the "the rock" that reoccurs in the Bible. One of Jesus's parables talks about building your house on a rock, something that has firm foundations, vs. building it upon sinking sand. The rock of Gibraltar is fabled as immovable and invincible as it is known to have survived thousands of years of seiges, protecting its people through all those battles. His "little sister" character is obviously a strong, immovable person on whom he relied. My favorite is "We found peace in the shadows long enough to see the monsters rise," which ultimately resolves at the end of the song with "We found peace in the shadows long enough to see the monsters die." This might be a stretch, but this conjures up Pslam 23 in my mind, the one that says "Yea though I walk through the valley of the SHADOW of death I shall fear no evil." The shadows that Jason talks about symbolize the hard times in his life, dealing with demons. And even while he dealt with these, he was able to find peace in the company of his friends. Anyway, that's just something I noticed. :) Kelsey |
Michael Bublé – It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio Stasera) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
haha Michael said in an interview that this is probably the LEAST romantic song he's ever sung.. The whole gist of the song is "Do me now!" LOL Personally, it's my favorite on the album. The instrumentation is fabulous. It's such a fun song. |

Oh this song IS hot! It's great! |
Jason Mraz – On Love, In Sadness Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is just about one of my favorite songs of all time. I like the live version best. |
Jason Mraz – Older Lover Undercover Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's pretty literal. She's an "Older lover" but she's "Under cover" pretending she's younger and hiding her age. It's a really fun song. Good cruising music. |
Jason Mraz – 10,000 Motherfuckers (Selections for Friends version) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
You'd never expect a song with such a title to be so poignant, but it is. It's actually a really inspiring song. |
Michael Bublé – I'm Your Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is hot! It's about a man who'd do anything to please his girl. |
Josh Groban – Machine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's about someone who has lost their passion for what they're doing. Maybe they got into it because they love it, but now they just have the wrong motives. My favorite line is "The sun is still above all the rain that's coming down." It's like there is still hope no matter what fog you may be drowning in. It's encouraging. |
Josh Groban – Weeping Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah I heard somewhere that this is an African song protesting Apartheid. |
Jason Mraz – God Rests in Reason Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song puzzles me... In one line he's singing about God moving through you, the next he's saying he only believes in "good orderly direction." I think it's the reflection of a mind torn between belief and skeptisism. The mind says that the idea of God doesn't make sense, but the soul often feels that there is a God. |
Gavin Mikhail – Banner Years Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is my favorite song of Gavin's. It's also the ringtone on my phone! It's about questioning what you're doing, wondering if it's even worthwhile. |
John Mayer – Belief Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with tbug3 also... The song can DEFINITELY be about the war on terror. When people believe something strongly, they are not going to change their mind because someone tells them to. They won't "give up with their life on the line." |
John Mayer – Stop This Train Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Same here, Joanne of mine. I WANT to go to college and grow up. But at the same time I'm scared to death to leave the nice comfortable life that I have now. What if my life in the future never matches up to my hopes and dreams? Change is a scary thing. |
John Mayer – Stop This Train Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Hey, that's a really good description, wokeupinacar, thanks. |
Josh Groban – You Raise Me Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is timeless. When I saw Josh Groban in concert, he sang it with one of the local gospel choirs. It was amazing. There was not a dry eye left in the place. Music like this, despite how you interpret it, can be a spiritual experience to listen to. You can just hear it and be inspired. |
Josh Groban – You Are Loved (Don't Give Up) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Oh I love this song! The meaning is pretty self-explanatory, but it can be seen from many perspectives. I personally see it as a Godly song. But it's pretty much for anyone who wants to encourage and uplift another. |
John Mayer – Belief Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with thatguy. It's not attacking religion or anyone in particular's beliefs. It's saying that our beliefs are a good thing for us to lean on, but we can't force them upon others. We can't force others to believe what we do. Nobody believes the exact same thing, so if we all act upon every impulse of our feelings, the world will continue to be chaotic. |
John Mayer – The Heart of Life Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah I think it's about people. People let you down and hurt your feelings but at the core of everything, they are ultimately good because they have the ability to love. It's really easy to look at the world and just give up on the whole human race altogether, but John reminds us that love has the ability to fix it all. |
John Mayer – Gravity Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it isn't about one certain situation in particular... Mostly about REALITY being like gravity. We all want to live in our own dream world and maybe our fantasies skew our perception of the real world. Then Reality comes to bring us out of the world we want and into the world that really exists, which is never as pleasant as the one we envision. "Its wanting more that's gonna set me to my knees" Higher expectations only disappoint him more. Getting your hopes up only causes more disappointment in the end. |
John Mayer – Stop This Train Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I thought the line was "Don't for a minute CHANGE this place you're in?" That makes the most sense to me too... Anyway, this song is my favorite on Continuum. I can totally relate to it, being a senior in high school. I think it's kind of the perspective he had in mind when he wrote this ... Graduating and leaving home for college or work or whatever. |
Gavin Mikhail – Fight The Sky Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I LOVE this song and I LOVE Gavin! To me, this song is about overcoming obstacles that the world throws at us, as well as our own insecurities. You know, the whole "You are your own worst enemy" thing. |
Josh Groban – Remember When It Rained Lyrics | 18 years ago |
My friend explicated this song in an english paper and his take on it was so astonishing. I don't know if it's exactly the meaning of the song, but it is what the song means to him. His idea was that the song was completely spiritual. The idea was focusing only on God and the water and cleansing symbolizes baptism and being forgiven of sins. I wish I could post his paper word for word as it was amazing. I'd never looked at the song that way before. |
Jason Mraz – Sleeping To Dream Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think you all are right with the long distance relationship meaning... but I see another meaning to it too, one I can relate to more. I also think it could be someone waiting to meet their dream girl/guy. He's so tired of living without that girl in his life. That's how I relate to it anyway... Seems like all the great guys I know are taken or gay, lol... Kelsey |
