Don't listen to the douchebags who call this song boring. This is a beautiful little atmospheric piece of English psychedelia, and it's perfect just like it is. I always thought the song was a reflection on the relationship of an older brother and little sister, and how they used to play as children. Eventually the sister grows up and marries, and in a sense the brother is replaced. It's a beautiful gem. |

"One less" set of footsteps seems to imply that there were multiple sets of footsteps going in and out of this girl's bedroom. One less pair of jeans, one less voice, one less man, etc. By the sounds of it, she's the one who dumped him ("if that's the way you want, that's the way I want it more") but he's letting the girl know she was a cheater and a slut. By leaving her, he'll only be "one less" guy among many.
Most of Jim Croce's breakup songs are heart wrenching, but this one really does seem to just say "adios." |

Incredible end to an incredible album. "Sleeping" has always been a metaphor for death and dying. Even in the Bible, death is sometimes called sleep. I believe Porcupine Tree used this phrase as a deliberate double-meaning. It's talking about meaningless sex as an escape, but it also means suicide. Let's sleep together = let's die together. I believe the song implies meaningless sex and suicide are one and the same. Either way, there is a kind of spiritual death that takes place; the soul is extinguished. I believe this album will be remembered for many years to come. |

I believe the song is about the overwhelming amount of pornography online, and how the internet and pornography are destructive in nature. "But they're keeping me dumb and hot." Computers are constantly stimulating us, using "millions of ways and words to say nothing." They keep us happy with porn, and we get collectively dumber because we're wasting our lives sitting naked in front of computers. |

How could anyone suggest this song is about something as boring as drugs? How lame and overdone. You can't appreciate this song and honestly believe it's about getting high. Patton isn't a drug user, the album cover isn't a bottle cap it's a ripple of water... Come on.
This song is my favorite by the band. I like to think it's about a near-death experience, or maybe just having a deeply spiritual/religious experience. It's big. It's understanding the meaning of life, it's everything. It's the real thing. I love it. |

The song makes me think it's about the end of childhood, or young adulthood, as others have mentioned. It especially makes me think of leaving behind friends or people who you have outgrown.
You have to move on and leave behind the "crows of fools" who live in their broken down cars, who "fight with phones," or get into arguments and fights through text messages, and "despise the sun" or sleep all day because they are pot heads or slackers and don't have jobs.
Obviously I'm bringing to this my own history, but I like to think it's about realizing that the lazy summer is over, and you have to move on. |

It's about a male slut. Just like Ex Abrupto said, they sing about a man who needs women to feel important or validated or something, but he just uses them.
It mentions that "He's got a thing in his head / It's from a book that he read." Any thoughts on what book this was? Isn't there a book on how to pick up girls called The Game or something similar? The guy basically sounds like a douche bag. |

For all the songs Depeche Mode has that doubt faith or religion in general, I like to think this song is honestly about repenting of your sins. Putting a bad lifestyle behind you, being forgiven, and moving on. He says he's breaken his fall, as in he's stopped his descent into hell. It's a pretty good feeling, and I believe the song captures it pretty well. |

Excellent rock song. It's about a theme that I haven't heard a lot of songs about; reflecting on a past relationship that failed. It seems like the relationship ending was pretty painful, but now the narrator realizes it was for the best and things are much better now.
The last verse always confused me a little until I read the lyrics and understood that he is singing about home when he says, "I never want to leave you no more."
Great song, and catchy, as someone pointed out. |

Gorgeous song, beautiful and elegant. And it rocks. I always wondered about the Western Woman lines myself. I never realized that perhaps Roger Waters was just speaking to the women of western culture. It's actually a really sad song. Not just bitter, but truly sorrowful. |

One day while listening to this, I started to think it was a song about God. This may have already been said, so excuse the redundancy.
"In your house, I long to be," kind of gives the imagery of heaven, or maybe a church. The narrator wants to get back to God, back to church. The scriptures say, "In my father's kingdom there are many mansions." Perhaps the narrator meant one of these houses.
"I confess," has a religious tone, "I was lost in the pages of a book full of death... If a god we'll lay to rest..." Sounds like the Holy Bible, the story of Christ being laid to rest in His tomb?
The narrator speaks of praying to God or angels or anyone that will get him into heaven, expressing the humble faith of a pagan. It seems as though he feels like he wants to change his life. He also refers to heaven as a place he once was long ago, and this is the idea that our spirits lived with God before we were born, and the place we'll go back to. "Abraham taken into the bosom of God."
He continues to describe how he read "Till the day was gone And i sat in regret Of all the things i've done." He is having a moment of repentace, it seems, and wishes to return to God.
He declares that he will wait "like a stone." This is perhaps a biblical allusion to Christ as "the rock of your salvation." And even Peter, Christ's apostle, who's name literally meant "a stone." Christ said that "upon this rock will I build my church," and this double meaning meant Peter (the stone), and also the rock of personal revelation.

The song, to me, is about a girl or young woman who is not constant in her relationships. She is old enough to change her name, or old enough to settle down and marry, but does not. "It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game." I always thought that this reffered to the female tendency to be inconstant. To be a flirt, or to just not want to commit to a relationshp, in other words. This woman knows it's time to stop playing around, but she just wants to keep going at the game. |

For some reason I doubt B.O.C. had any specific meaning in mind, but I wondered if it had to do with Jesus Christ being an Extra-Terrestrial? The song mentions how Balthazaar has learned the awful truth and how he's found the saucer news. Balthazar is a traditional name for one of the wise men mentioned in the New Testament. Maybe Balthazaar came to the realization that Jesus was from another planet or something. |
