Tears for Fears – Memories Fade Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about being hurt by love that went wrong somehow... The songwriter is rejected by his "ultimate" lover. After the break up he cannot continue to a next relationship, because he's still hurt and caged by history (this past relationship)... He's in doubt about ever being able to love again in the future. Simply stuck in the past.

Anyway, a very beautiful song, one of my TFF's most favorite songs.

Dire Straits – Your Latest Trick Lyrics 18 years ago
When I was young (about 14), I thought this song is a conversation with God, telling him how bad and filthy this world became, all due to his "latest trick".

But again, I was young - and naive then :-)

Tears for Fears – Ashes To Ashes Lyrics 18 years ago
A great cover for David Bowie's song...
Can be found in the TFF album "Saturnine, Martial and Lunatic", which is a collection of rare and B-sides tracks of the band.

Roland: "The NME were putting together a compilation of various artists covering their favorite 'number ones' and asked us if we would care to contribute. When perusing the list, I was shocked how few I really cared for. In the end we plumped for this brilliant piece by Bowie and tried desperately to something original with it, eventually gave up and made a carbon copy - still it's better than blur's version of "Maggie May" (or is it?!!!!)."

"Tora" = "Tiger" in Japanese.
"Tora! Tora! Tora!" was the code signal for the Japanese bombers of Pearl Harbor, during World War II.

Depeche Mode – Policy Of Truth Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is more general and philosophical, and deals with the ideal of "always tell the truth".

It's about an honest person who is very sincere, and beleives that telling the truth is the right thing to do, IN ANY SITUATION. However, this ideal brings troubles to this person, at times...

It is possible that Martin wrote this song about Dave Gahan, which is known for his (over-) sincerity, mostly in public interview. Something that the other band members (including Martin) didn't like at times...

So, what's the message? To be a liar? no... The message is actually a compromise:
"Hide what you have to hide, and tell what you have to tell".

Depeche Mode – I Feel You Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about a sexual intercourse...
But not a meaningless intercourse, but one with your loved one... Sex is the fulfillment of their love.

Depeche Mode – Fly On The Windscreen Lyrics 18 years ago
"Life is short, don't waste it. You and I are now together, isn't that a gift? Let's make the most out of it, while we still can... Death is unpredictable and inevitable. Let's make love, NOW!"

Sounds like a clever "pick-up line", but I like this song very much...

Depeche Mode – Newborn Lyrics 18 years ago
Now this is a very optimistic song... I haven't heard such an optimism in Martin's songs for a while... I also think this is the only reason why it is a "B-side" and was not included in the "Playing The Angel" album. It's not that it's not a good enough song for an album, it just didn't fit its theme ("pain and suffering").

General interpretation: This song, in general, is about someone who's experiencing a major change in his life - a change for good... Just like a newborn child, he's openning his eyes, learning to walk, etc... He actually discovers a "new world" he was not even aware of before. It could, of course, be related to a new lover or partner, found after years of being with the wrong one.

Less general, this could be related to the songwriter himself - Martin L. Gore - which was divorced not long ago... Maybe he found a new lover that makes him feel that good? Not sure... Or maybe leaving a painful marriage, and being "free" for the first time, is that major change that "opened up his eyes"? Well, sound more like Martin... ;-)

Now from personal point of view... I like this song very much, as I've experienced myself some kind of major change in my life, about a year ago... At the age of 29, I started doing things I didn't ever do in my life before... There was an event (a near-death accident) that changed my general point of view in life. The first time I read the lyrics for this song, I almost cryed... It was like I wrote this song by myself, word by word.
I was newborn at the age of 29, and I really feel like I was "asleep" or actually "never lived at all" all these years.

What do YOU think?

P.S. - If you haven't heard the song yet, do yourself a favor, and listen to the original version of it (the B-side of "A Pain That I'm Used To"). The remixes simply kill this song.

Depeche Mode – A Pain That I'm Used To Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song also relates to Martin (the songwriter) L. Gore's recent divorce...
He's been in some kind of "familiar" pain during this relationship, some kind of pain that he got used to. But somehow, this divorce had put him into a new kind of pain, that bad that he prefers the "good old" pain he got used to.

It could also be from his children's point of view: where their parents where together, things were not good for them... but "all this running around" - moving back and forth between one parent and another, is worse than the (emotional) pain they are used to.
