Iron & Wine – Resurrection Fern Lyrics 16 years ago
It's "Sister Lowery," and toward the end, it's "timid shade of autumn leaves" instead of "tender."

I love this song. Look up what a resurrection fern is; it's a really cool plant that I never knew about.

The music itself is really greatly, slowly Southern. I love this album because there's so much on it that I picture to be the musings of an old-fashioned Southern boy years and years ago.

Baling wire is used to repair fences and such, and I love the references like that one in this song. Great.

Piebald – Sex Sells and (Unfortunately) I'm Buying Lyrics 17 years ago
The beginning of this song sounds like someone just talking about getting older - it being harder to stand and sit, or being slower. Not really old, just out-of-prime old. I can't figure out if the middle part is a direct reference to paying for sex or just an allusion to sex in the media/etc. I also love the last part about meanings.

And the horn fadeout/in. Awesome.

Piebald – The Monkey Versus The Robot Lyrics 17 years ago
This is the first Piebald song I ever heard and I love the 7/8ths time. The song meaning seems pretty straightforward: He describes two types of people, a robot (the girl that only works) and a monkey (the guy that just wants to sit around and do nothing), and then comments that his job (writing music and getting paid for it) is the best job ever. They don't have to just work they hate all the time but they still have some sort of responsibility.

Copeland – Where's My Head Lyrics 17 years ago
Those bizarre drums really portray that unsettled sleep feeling that permeates throughout the whole record, but in a much more jarring manner. I like this as a opening track.

Pedro the Lion – The Poison Lyrics 17 years ago
This song so perfectly portrays the feeling of being inebriated, heartbroken, and pissed off. The way he sings, the lazy guitar strums, the scattered thought patterns, really strange imagery (x's on my eyes) repeating himself, referencing his old man... it's just perfect song construction.

Pedro the Lion – Start Without Me Lyrics 17 years ago
Another song about fatherhood. This poor ignorant, lazy father has a gambling problem and tries to play it off as himself being misunderstood or for the family.

I feel like the "start without me" reference is to his wife having an affair while he's off at the races, but he keeps her happy with the money he gets.

I love Bazan but he makes me feel so depressed when I hear his songs and realize just how greedy and ignorant we all are.

Pedro the Lion – Foregone Conclusions Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't really see this as David Bazan "making fun of" God or Christians as much as I see it as most of his other music - his struggles with his faith. This one is obviously much more belligerent but I don't think it's supposed to be in any way funny or amusing. Just like the rest of this album, it's about the inadequacy of feeling the same thing people do for God with a nice tinge of Bazan's cynicism. He's awesome.

Pedro the Lion – I Do Lyrics 17 years ago
Dave is just feeling sorry for his child who has to live through the rushed marriage and prompt divorce of its parents. He says he obviously doesn't regret having a child, but he knows which he would take back (saying "I do"). I really prefer Bazan's cynical side.

Pedro the Lion – Discretion Lyrics 17 years ago
For you guys that don't get it:

Farmer's son hires hitman to kill farmer, hitman thinks son is an "asshole," kills him instead, leaves town.

It took me a while to make out the "hired to hit the farmer" line so I never got this song for the longest time.

Pedro the Lion – Eye on the Finish Line Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know how you can say Bazan is seriously referencing Christ in this song. The album is about him killing his wife and his works around this time are just sopped with sarcastic, bitter hate. I think this song is about some delirious post-murder period. He constantly remains "faithful" despite bad things, most obvious during the first track and this one. He's satirizing blind faith while embodying hatred for his ex-wife.

Isn't it "I tasted summer on your peppery skin?"

The Decemberists – Sons and Daughters Lyrics 17 years ago
Well the song must be meant to be relatively new because it uses the word "dirigible," and those definitely weren't around in colonial American times.

Also, I almost see some sarcastic imagery. Meloy says "We'll build our walls of aluminum; we'll fill our mouths with cinnamon." If you think, aluminum is a relatively weak metal unless alloyed with another metal. Also, cinnamon tastes good but holds absolutely no nutritional value.

I'm not sure what these symbols mean but that's what I'm catching.

And represent Oconee county Georgia, even though I agree that it's probably mentioning Oconee SC.

The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics 17 years ago
To think this song has anything to do with Kennedy is just nonsense. A well-dressed man being shot could be any assassination in the past 200 years. Come on.

And yeah, it should be "Sing, muse, of the passion of the pistol..." et c.

Iron & Wine – Beneath the Balcony Lyrics 18 years ago
Sam rocks the banjo on this song and I love it.

The song starts off as striking me as a boy who thinks he is humble and pious but he's actually pretty bitter and isn't really that intimate with God.

I see the "sword across his knees" reference as a nod to the Bible calling itself the sword of God.

And I don't see the "...still some fucker made.." reference about guns ruining lives. At all. I maybe see it as another reference to misplaced anger.

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 18 years ago
This song makes me want to go kiss my mom. It's about a small town boy growing up and moving out. He has done some terrible things in his life and really given his mom a hard time. He loves his mom and regrets what he's done and hopes his mother doesn't worry about him.

He tries to relieve his mom by telling her "Sons are like birds.."

I love the last stanza. He's so sad about all that he's done (and hasn't done) that has made his mother sad. This song strikes me so personally and I love it.

Iron & Wine – The Rooster Moans Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is so chilling. The line "Jesus weeps, but he's been paid" is so sacreligious that it just creeps me out. At first I thought this was a literal song about a trip through the deep South.

I love the imagery. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a real account or a big metaphor of doing something terribly wrong.

Iron & Wine – Promising Light Lyrics 18 years ago
I see the "sidewalk girls" reference as just random girls, how he sees a "promising light" because he still longs for a relationship and just wants to settle for someone he doesn't know.

Iron & Wine – Lion's Mane Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a great song by a good old Southern boy. His accent comes out in this song and I love it.

When I first heard the song I immediately thought of CS Lewis' Aslan character (a big lion, a huge analogy to the Christian God).

By "hiding in the lion's mane" I think he means that love is scary to approach and you have to be very gentle at first, but if a lion trusted you, being protected by it would be the safest feeling in the world.

Terrible wording, yes. Sorry.

Iron & Wine – Dearest Forsaken Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a really creepy Pedro-the-Lion-esque song. I agree with the abusive husband story. It's actually a pretty chilling song. I love it. He's a great fingerpicking guitarist.

This song is just describing a girl. You can take the rest of the song how you want talking about the girl.

Iron & Wine – Love and Some Verses Lyrics 18 years ago
First of all, the first verse has a typo, it's also "...May I be weaved in your hair."

I see this song differently than most of the posters on here, which I like. I see it as a modest girl that a guy (Sam Beam, lyricist extraordinaire) really likes. Maybe they're not to the point yet that they're really serious, but he thinks he loves her and wants to tell her. The rest of the song is just observations about the girl's humble-yet-dreamy personality.

I love this song and it reminds me a lot of my girlfriend. I think you guys are looking way too into it. It's like 10 lines. How are you going to say it has some enormous story line?

Thrice – Secret Of The Easy Yoke Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't if Thrice plays this, but I am sure that David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) wrote it and it's on his album "It's Hard to Find a Friend."

David Bazan wrote a "Christian" album or two. His wife left him in a really bad manner, and he's been writing music like this for some time now. He struggles, and that's what I love about his music.

Listen to the album (maybe his best), "Control" and you'll figure out what I'm saying.

The Decemberists – The Gymnast, High Above the Ground Lyrics 18 years ago
Here are some definitions I thought I should contribute for figuring out Meloy's song.

Splayed means "spread apart"
A "Tarlatan" is a garment, so that's where tarlatan holes come in.
A "bosun" is a person of moderate command on a ship, and a "quay" is a wharf. Meloy really uses this seafaring imagery later on in his writing, so I am currently wondering how he tried to tie it in here.

Hope that helped.
