Ingrid Michaelson – The Chain Lyrics 11 years ago
I've recently fallen in love with this song and was stumped, as it seems everyone else was, by the lines "So glide away on soapy heals".... which was why I came here :) So after reading everyone else's interpretations, I read and reread and rereread (You get the point) the chorus, and nothing seemed "right" to me because something always contradicted...until I thought "Well, maybe there's another way to read this line entirely?" And so I reread the whole song and realized she's not really talking to him until the line "And you, my love, are gone"... so the lines "So glide away on soapy heels" does not necessarily need to be about him who left her, but herself. It may be a stretch, but it kinda makes sense.. When I think of someone gliding away on soapy heels, I think of someone who is unsteady-- though it may SOUND fun, it's really not safe or fun... kinda like how living without commitment or responsibility could sound fun, but in the end it's what really keeps a person steady. I think maybe SHE'S the one with the commitment issues- Which would make the next lines a little ironic/poetic "And promise not to promise anymore"... which I'd take as saying "I know I'm unstable and have had commitment issues in the past, but I've made my last promise to you and only you and I will only keep that"... which is why she'll take the chain from off the door when he comes back. Another reason why I think this could be a possible interpretation is because of the line "And I'll never say that I won't love, but I don't say a lot of things, and you my love are gone." She's saying she won't ever love-- but, given their past he must realize that she doesn't say everything and because of that, he's gone. Does that make any sense to anyone else? I feel like if this song were about a man who had commitment issues, then why would she take the chain off the door for him? I feel like this is a chain that's been on the door a LOOOONG time, longer than him... maybe because she says "FROM off the door"... the from makes it sound like the chain is apart of the door and she's removing it permanently for him. You don't do that for someone you can't rely on.

I dunno. But I fully intend on asking Miss Michaelson if I ever should have the chance to meet her :) Beautiful song :)

Christina Perri – Distance Lyrics 11 years ago
From the behind the scenes video on youtube: "Basically the song is about falling for someone you can't, and you can't tell them. So it's keeping that secret and building that tension and kind of swimming in those feelings that come about when love is brand new but you can't call it love yet."
I love this song- it's absolutely beautiful lyrically and musically.

Tom Petty – Into The Great Wide Open Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is, as already mentioned, about a striving musician who finally gets his big break, takes advantage of it, and loses in the end.
I heard that they were going to make a movie based off of this song and Johnny Depp was going to play the main character... but they ended up just doing the music video with Depp. The story seems very similar to the one portrayed in Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Did anyone notice that Joey from Friends is the one getting the tattoo at the end of the video?
Great song. Great video. Great lesson.

Tom Petty – Free Fallin' Lyrics 15 years ago
I've only read this first few comments, so I don't know if a lot of people have exactly said this... But I think the song is about a guy who had the perfect goody-two-shoe girl friend... the girl that everyone wants... she loves jesus, listens to wholesome music, etc... But I think he feels suffocated by the perfection... and he feels like a bad boy for not appreciating her perfection. He dumps her so he can just free fall into nothing.. he likes being spontaneous and not knowing what to expect next. The drugs interpretation could easily fit in with this-- he takes drugs which makes him more of a bad boy and more suffocated by her perfection. Fantastic song.

Augustana – Sweet and Low Lyrics 16 years ago
You know, originally I really thought this song was really just a love song-- but I'm reading these comments about how it's about his daughter-- and I can totally see it! You know, there's that poem "A Prayer For My Daughter" by WB Yeats.. which is basically him talking about what he does and doesn't want his daughter to become (often comparing negative aspects to Maud Gonne).... This song sounds a lot like this poem. Augustana is basically saying "Ya know, it's going to be tough, and you're really going to want to give up-- but there's so much to live for that it's not worth giving up."
I am really impressed with Augustana-- I thought for sure they would be a one hit wonder.

Lights – The Last Thing On Your Mind Lyrics 16 years ago
You know, I haven't talked about this song to anyone else and there aren't many other comments about this song on here yet, so I don't have anything to compare my meaning of this song to... but I'll share it anyway.
To me, I don't think she's singing to a lover-- I think she's singing to herself. I mean, it's totally plausible that she could be singing to a guy ("Straighten up your tie" would probably be aimed toward a man), but I can't see how the first verse could go along with that.
However, if she is singing this to herself, she's kinda telling herself "Hey... it's a lot easier if I just don't think about how much this actually hurts.." Like how people don't want to really say "i love you" because it would make it that much harder to get over him/her.
The second verse is kind of her moving on... She's just be okay if she keeps singing and doesn't let anyone get to her.
Anyway.. that's how I read the song.

Pink Floyd – High Hopes Lyrics 17 years ago
My sister and parents went to Europe a couple years ago and visited parliament in the United Kingdom and there's a bell there called "The Division"... they call it that because when a government body is coming to a division in a law, or some such thing, they ring that bell so everyone can put their vote in and hopefully turn the vote their way... I think that's probably what gilmour, wright and Mason were doing with this album.. this was their division bell-- calling to fans to see whether they should go on without roger or completely end it. The album didn't sell as well and thus, he must have believed the vote was in favor of not going on as Pink Floyd. This whole album is about communication-- getting your word in and possibly changing events-- You can hear the bell in the background and I think that that's what this whole song is trying to encompass... Do we go on?

Pink Floyd – Coming Back to Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I've been a Pink Floyd fan my entire life-- which may contradict what I'll be saying next: Up till a month or so ago, I never really listened to Division Bell. I simply didn't believe it could be as good because Roger Waters wasn't in it. However, I was having a HORRIBLE day at work and went into an office to cool down. I felt DEAD.. or at least I wanted to be dead. This song was on the radio in there and the song does just what it's title suggests... it brings you back to life. The beginning sounds just how I was feeling: Depressed and with no hope of going on (Gilmour says so much with his guitar, it's scary!)... and then the line "And I was staring straight into the shining sun" came and it picked up.. and INSTANTLY I felt re-energized.. Like I could tackle all the problems I was facing. I have no idea what gilmour was thinking of when he wrote the lyrics-- but through the guitar, I believe the songs has to be about simply moving on after a bad day(s)... I've talked to some people about it and we're all in agreement-- Pink Floyd could have TOTALLY lived on without Waters... had they tried to make just ONE more album, I believe they would've kept going.

Pink – Split Personality Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with Caramia8 on this song.. I think it's about a girl who's two personalities are 1) Trying to please others so she fits in and has friends 2)Not wanting to fit in, telling herself that she's all she needs.. she doesn't need friends. It's a hard question, Do you change yourself to conform or do you be yourself and risk having no friends? I think at the end the narrator (pink, if she's writing this about herself) has given up listening to herself and is starting to conform. I used to think this song was about a person with some psychological problem.. But i don't know anymore.

Hey, at songfacts.com.. it says that this song is about his dad/stepdad who was a really bad alcoholic that was driving his family apart and how he didn't want to end up like him.. and at the end, he's saying that he's supposedly clean now, but he still doesn't believe it'll last long.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought this was a love song.. I know.. naive.. well, it is a little bit... I think it's about a guy who's in love with a fairly unstable woman.. . But I think that "Babys black balloons make her fly.." is talking about how the woman had an abortion... she didn't want to have a baby, so when the baby died, she felt freed. and he almost fell into that hole in her life.. the hole could be her opinion on life-- carefree and nothing. I think he regrets being with her.. the line "A thousand other boys could never reach you, how could I have been the one?" could be a romantic sentiment of how fortunate he is to have gotten her over all other boys.. or it could be a "Why me?" cry. This woman isn't thinking about where her actions are leading her... she's completely aimless and one day she's going to end up wondering why she's even living.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Become Lyrics 18 years ago
haha, for me, Johnny's talking about this girl that he's either involved with romantically or just really good friends with.. and this girl was a very vivacious girl.. full of life and energy and she KNEW her dreams and was prepared to make her dreams reality... and everyone would stare as she walked by because she would shine. But then people her tore her down for whatever reasons: Jealousy, sheer evilness, whatever.. and that brought her down to the point where she wanted to hide from everyone.. but what Johnny's saying is that if she just ignores all of them and is her true self like she really was... then she'd be truly beautiful. I think that maybe Johnny is in love with this girl, but she won't let anyone in because her self esteem is so low.. so Johnny just wants to help her so badly.. that was my interpretation.

The Weepies – Gotta Have You Lyrics 18 years ago
I found out about the Weepies through my mom, who found them through an iTunes playlist as well. For me, this song is about trying to get over someone you love, but can't. In the chorus, she uses objects of different types of break up tools to discribe that nothing will help.. Coffee is like the comfort from family and friends.. crying is simply crying, Whiskey is drinking away your sorrows, wine is going out and finding a quick rebound. But none of those help.. she just needs him. I think at the end though, she finally gets him back.. or says she will.. she's looking in the future "telescope" and sees a suitcase and warm coat at the back of a blue boat... so she doesn't need them anymore? I dunno, but I love this song. I know how she feels

The Cranberries – Dreams Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is just talking about falling in love. Starts off by saying that stuff changes everyday, and this is what's changed with me. She's had relationships before and she's always thought 'This is it", but it's never quite as it seems... Then she realizes that she's actually falling for someone... harder than she's fallen before... and it's almost a completely different experience as before.. it's impossible to ignore... so she's going to go for it, despite past troubles, and warns him that since she's allowing it, he better treat her nicely. But I don't think the last part is what this site says it is... on others sites and what it sounds like is she says "So talk to me, amazing mind, so understanding and so kind, you're everything to me"... because she's so enthralled with him that just talking to him is comforting... I like to imagine that this is what love is really like... it's something to look forward to

Paula Abdul – Straight Up Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song! It's great to dance to and expresses every emotion you have when you like a guy. You don't want to be hurt again.. you've been hurt enough and it's easier just to hear it straight up than being played around with. Some might say "well, wouldn't you be able to tell if they're not really into you?" Well, you know, when you are in deep smit with some guy, lets face it, you're thinking is definitely impaired. Love this song.. good release of energy!

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for clearing this up for me and my sisters, mum, and all my sisters friends. You have no idea how long we've been looking for the meaning of "24".. my sister and mum dug into the Bible like no other and found a bunch of stuff that would relate to other parts of the song (The second man is referring to your spiritual self, btw... and answer is42 is right, I think he is referring to Jacob in the Bible)... but we never found out what it could mean. So THANKS!... It put us all to ease!

Pink Floyd – Mother Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, I agree with most of the people on here.. I think the wall could mean the Berlin Wall... but probably not. I think it's a symbolic wall (one of the many that are described in 'The wall') made up of our choices. I think that the speaker isn't really prepared for what's expected of him.. lack of self confidence or confidence in others... But that's how his mum raised him... and his mum tells him not to worry about it because she'll take care of it all.. she'll choose his girlfriends, his work, schooling, whatever...then at the end, in my imagination, I think the mother passes away or some such thing.. and now the boy is alone and has to make his own decisions... but his choices thus far has made his "wall" HUGE and he's so scared he can't move... "Mama, why'd it have to be so high?" I like what "dr jekyll" said... "it protects you from the outside, but traps you inside"...

Pink Floyd – The Great Gig in the Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
Hey, you guys, go out and buy the Darkside of the Moon DVD.. they probably have it at like WalMart or something... It just has interviews with the members of Pink Floyd and a couple of their sound engineers and some random people and they talk about how they came up with each song and what they mean and what they did behind the scenes stuff... when it gets to "Great Gig In The Sky" they say that they hadn't originally thought of her, but their engineer guy was working with Clare with something else and mentioned having her do it. So they had her listen to the music ONCE, told her to think of death, misery and pain and just let it out, and she did, she comes out all embarassed and says "I'm sorry, that was horrible" But PInk Floyd loves it, they do try other takes... numerous takes... with words and without, but it wasn't as good as the first cut that they did.. straight from Roger Waters mouth. Buy the DVD, it's really good.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song is about what we've traded in for this life we live today and how the person really wishes someone was there to comfort him in it. I mean, if you think about it plainly, you think "Well, of course I know the difference between heaven and hell! I'm not stupid"... you say that, but do you follow it? Do you REALLY know the difference? Or why do you still sneak around or steal or lie? Is heaven really getting high or sleeping around? Some people would say yes, but those are things that lead you as far away from heaven as you can get. Then they say "Did they get you to trade hero's for ghosts", it could be talking about the 'perfect person' personified by the media rather than true heros. The media tells us people like Britney Spears, Blonde hair, big boobs and a butt load of money who will give chump change to a charity is really heroic. While really, the people like your parents or people around you at work who give up everything they can to feed their family or help others are the true heros, but we're told to look down on those people... This person's so lost on what they should do because of all the hypocrisy and oh, how they wish someone were here to help them deal with it.

Pink Floyd – The Great Gig in the Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
So in the Dark Side DVD I have that has interviews with each of the Floyd members and people who worked with them, I was surprised at how they came up with this song. As you can tell after listening to the album, the albums main focuses are Death, Money, and Time... So for "Great Gig in the Sky" they wanted it so you could FEEL the mourning... they wanted someone with power. So they called up Clare Torry and had her listen to the musical part of it ONCE and said "All right, we want you to think of despair, dreadfulness, no hope... death.. and we want you to explain it with your voice"... so she went in the sound studio and belted it out... she comes out all embarassed "Sorry, guys, that was horrible." the members of Pink Floyd are stunned and even after trying different ways, they choose the very first recording Clare did with only listening to it once. This song is about Death... for the person dying.. and the person who's dying's family...

Pink Floyd – Learning to Fly Lyrics 18 years ago
I've heard that this song was also made by a spiritual experience Gilmour had... maybe while flying is plane... but it's about a person's life... at first, it's a failure... it's like satans grasp... pulling him in for more, ya know? But he tries, and despite repeated failures, he keeps going and finally lifts off... a complete out-of-body-experience of finally succeeding. This is poetry at it's best

sorry, also to add just a bit more... if you go to their concert or watch a recorded concert when they play "Brain Damage" they show pictures of presidents and past leaders behind them... so it's always struck me that they're trying to get through that those people are the lunatics.. The one's who are doing all these insane things who also just happen to get headlines..

Pink Floyd – Brain Damage Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, so I know this one for sure because I've been to Cambridge and I have a DVD about the making of Dark Side and Roger Waters talks about it. What he's referring to in "Brain Damage" when he talks about the grass, is this little patch of perfect grass in the middle of cambridge that has a "Don't step on the grass" sign on it.. and it's all chained off. Why Water's talks about it is because people are named 'crazy' for actually wanting to step on that perfect patch of grass.. and those who wouldn't even dream of enjoying of such a pleasure are the normal ones. I think this song could be about Syd, but I think it's mainly about breaking down stereotypes and expectations. "You raise the blade, you make the change, you rearrange me till I'm sane".. he's talking about the bull crap the world feeds you that, apparently, is gospel truth. DON'T GIVE IN!

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 18 years ago
I have that book by Nick Mason that talks all about the history and making of Pink Floyd.. and from what I remember, "Comfortably Numb" isn't about Roger Water's hepititus shots or whatever... They made it based off of Syd Barrett's mad drug obsession and how he had to get so messed up before he went on stage to even perform. I think the song goes from 2 perspectives: He who gave Syd the drugs and Syd. I think it is about Syd's trouble's in life and how the only way he could deal with it was to become "comfortably numb".. powerful song.

Sting – Don't Stand So Close to Me Lyrics 18 years ago
Just for those who don't already know... What he means when he says "That book by Nabakov", he's referring to the novel by Vladimir Nabakov called "Lolita" about a grown man who moves into a lady's house and has an affair with her 12 year old daughter. At first he finds his acts totally justified, but nearing the end, he sees the creep he really is..
