Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think it global warming is certainly part of the meaning of this song. In the video, it zooms to Al Gore at the Live Earth concert, from summer 2007. To me, it is empowerment to realize all that is wrong with this world and someone (Rob Thomas) is verbalizing that we can do better but we havent. "How far we come" In the way he sings it, it seems like we havent come far at all. |
Peter Gabriel – I Have The Touch Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I am reminded by my friend that died by suicide when I hear this song. Right afer he died, i would talk to him in these lyrics. He was a very furry guy, with a full beard. I always like the part "There you stand before me, all that fur and all that hair." During the denial stage of grief, I would sing the plea at the end: Pull my chin, stroke my hair, scratch my nose, hug my knees Try drink, food, cigarette, tension will not ease I tap my fingers, fold my arms, breathe in deep, cross my legs Shrug my shoulders, stretch my back - but nothing seems to please I need contact I need contact Nothing seems to please I need contact |
They Might Be Giants – Hovering Sombrero Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Once again, TMBG has done it again by giving us deep messages in the guise of arbitrary objects. The deep themes are self esteem written in the lyrics: "When you take yourself for granted feel rejected and unwanted, know youre never just a hat, youre never only just a hat you know." There is also another theme of growing old and feeling nostalgia about years gone written in the following lyrics: 'Time is flying like an arrow And the clock hands go so fast they make the wind blow And it makes makes the pages of the calendar go Flying out the window one by one 'Till a hundred years are on the front lawn And the old familiar things are mostly all gone" But then we hear that the old sombrero just keeps hovering on; we identify with the object and all sing, "Hovering sombrero hover on!" |
Josh Groban – Remember When It Rained Lyrics | 18 years ago |
There is an element of grief in this song. He is lamenting lost love, either someone died or he is just heart broken over a relationship. The rain symbolizes both tears and cleansing. The feeling is that rain is welcomed to wash wash away the hurt. The cleansing comes when the feeling of hurt leaves you so raw, exposed and vulnerable that nothing more can happen but to surrender to the rain "coming down." |
Crash Test Dummies – Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song sums up trying to explain yourself in life. These teenagers in the song are feeling awkward, trying to explain events that indeed happen to everyone but we are conditioned to feel embarrassed about. For example, A boy who was in a traumatic accident and going through it turned his hair white A girl who is embarrassed about the birthmarks (or bruises from abuse) on her body who "had always just been there" A boy who goes to church and thought nothing of it until he is old enough (a teen now) to see how strange it is and to be self-conscious about it. After all, they had "always just gone there" |
