Ghost Mice – Cemeteries Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is about the fear of death.. and what lies beyond. Its also about being sad about are friends who have died, and how it sucks you cant talk to them after they are dead (because then maybe they could tell you what its like) |
Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics | 17 years ago |
@ changwang: WHAT??!?!? His connection to the Beatles is well-known, he *certainly* did NOT have "no idea how to appreciate music and songwriting". He was particularly connected to George Harrison, some of the best encores he ever did were Harrison songs. Baby Britain is not some frickin Da Vinci Code mystery, it is just an interaction between Elliott and someone he knew, someone who was on their way down just as he himself was. That other interpretations can be found (however spurious) is only a testament to his skill in songwriting. Is Thomas Dolby's "Europa & the Pirate Twins" about a summer he spent in love with someone who later was out of his league, or is it about a Europe that has lost sight of itself? From interviews with Dolby, we know that it is mostly the former, but partially the latter, mainly as an attempt to magnify the importance he felt the story of his young summer love deserved. Elliott was a master at creating evocative imagery in this way. Take his music at face value and you miss the point. Take it solely by its deeper intentions and you *still* miss the point. There are layers upon layers. |
Pixies – Distance Equals Rate Times Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think the song has to do something with math. Just watch these vids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZqV8v8dfYk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgbzBZBcdEQ |
The Hives – Walk, Idiot, Walk Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There's a great flash with this song in it at www.chohomio.com . I love the song and it applies quite well to the current ... situation. |
The Only Ones – Another Girl Another Planet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
@steveritt Cheers - updated! |
Gomez – 78 Stone Wobble Lyrics | 17 years ago |
My interpretation goes in a different direction: The distorted, wobbly sound and the "stone" in the title made me think that it is more about a guy who lost his love and is now sitting at home, smoking joint after joint and getting more and more isolated. "Open hearted surgery" means the attempts of his friends to heal his wounded heart, that are doomed to fail because he doesn't even want anyone to know him. =) |
Amon Amarth – Prediction Of Warfare Lyrics | 17 years ago |
What is the last line "King Olav threw his sword" supposed to imply? |
Savage Garden – I Don't Care Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think this is one of the best savage garden songs. i guess it's about him just spinning through life, trying to get something real out of it but failing. *No I wasn’t staring, I was only trying To get some substance, to get some meaning* and i also like the juxtaposition of him "feeling to much" but immediately after "not caring". |
Stone Temple Pilots – Vasoline Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The song is about putting vasoline on the ol' cock and balls and beating it 'till it bleeds. |
Tool – The Pot Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"The Pot" refers to the toilet. Maynard once said he loves Taco Bell at 2 o'clock in the morning cause it cleans him out real good. |
The Be Good Tanyas – Light Enough To Travel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
While the title can be taken literally, especially in light of the line about ditching the accordion to make an escape from the police, it can also be seen as an admonition against the emotional entanglements that can keep you tied down. |
David Allen Coe – Cum Stains On The Pillow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Fucking awesome song! Bust a nut! |
David Allen Coe – Fuckin in the Butt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think this song is about fucking maybe? |
Flyleaf – Fully Alive Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The lead singer has a horrible lisp. How the hell did she a record deal? Must have sucked a mean dick. |
Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The song is about a blow-up doll and how it actually feels real good to hump. |
Staind – Sober (Tool cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
What a shity cover. The douche can't even get the words right. |
Radiohead – Backdrifts (Honeymoon Is Over) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Dammit, why do people have to make all of their songs into something political? This song has nothing to do with politics guys, stop forcing your own meanings on to everything. It's about fleeting relationships, or prehaps one in particular that Thom is referring to here, and their deterioration shortly after the initial romance. |
The Chicks – Travelin' Soldier Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The song is about her losing her virginity at age 12 to an 18 year old man. |
The Who – Real Good Looking Boy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is about the moment Pete first realizes his love for little boys. |
Guano Apes – Pretty in scarlet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I like this song, too, but sure as hell not for the words. I gave up caring much about words long ago, exactly because of songs like this. You CAN'T squeeze any real meaning out of this song, just like 99.9% of any other song out there now. Everyone Michael Stipe these days--taking the low road, the easy way out, and just rhyming without giving a damn if it makes any sense. Why, you ask? Think about it--it's easier, and it allows the "artist" to be ambiguous and meaningless, while still saying SOMETHING, and therefore able to appeal to a wider audience. So, everyone comes here and says "It's about pain". Then someone else says "No, it's about existential torment". Then a third person comes in and says "No, uhh, I think it's about drugs". And so on. No one is right, no one is wrong, and the "artist" laughs all the way to the bank. Now, where the hell is my wine? |
Franz Ferdinand – What You Meant Lyrics | 17 years ago |
MDMA=ecstasy. It is not a "part", unless your ecstasy is contaminated. |
The Chicks – Let 'Er Rip Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is about letting out a big ol' fart. Duh! |
Queen – Another One Bites The Dust Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Pretty sure this song is about taking it up the butt. |
Flipsyde – Red Sky At Night Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Aesop Rock – Daylight Lyrics | 17 years ago |
If it's meaningful rap song your looking for this is clearly the wrong place, try Blackstar, Krs-one, The Coup, The Perceptionists, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy... (or some other of Aesop Rocks song like lucy)the list goes on and on contratary to what you see on MTV. however this detracts very little from what is a expertely poetic rap song from a current rapper who has considerable technical skills. Despite the fact that you have reached some kind of enlightement 'living things that all real people have lived' what you said is complete rubbish. |
Black Star – Definition Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There's some gems in here "People thinkin MC is short hand for Mis Conception" but thing song doesn't really have a meaning to it. it is something of an introduction but it's main purpose is a catcy single with some technically superb rap. |
Joanna Newsom – Sawdust and Diamonds Lyrics | 17 years ago |
according to the album liner notes, it's not a "murdering stake," it's a "murthering stake" - the words mean the same thing, but the above lyrics are incorrect |
Muse – Map of the Problematique Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song is BRILLIANT. i love it a million. i never thought about what it actually means, but it has a real melancholy mood about it. a kind of longing, maybe bitterness? reading the lyrics just now, a superficial interpretation would be about lost or unrequited love. i like what you're saying, though, Zaph. |
Powerman 5000 – When Worlds Collide Lyrics | 17 years ago |
You're all complete idiots and should die very slowly (I like Foamy's way of killing people). PM5K do put a lot of meaning into these lyrics, you guys are just too ignorant to see them (there are a few of you that came close). Quiffporn, were you trying to come up with the dumbest name you could possibly think up (it fits you well actually). PM5K is not pop at all, some of there songs are kind of like pop but the meanings of them are definitely not. The song is about how you act differently around different people (the worlds), i.e. around your parents and around your friends at school, and when those worlds collide, that's when you don't know how to act or respond to things. Or when friends who are different from each other but similar to you, meet for the first time. |
Powerman 5000 – Drop The Bombshell Lyrics | 17 years ago |
How do you guys not know what this song is about? It is obviously about how America is dropping bombs (not recently but will happen soon) and fighting nuclear wars when we say we are "keeping the peace." We(government really) are the ones starting it and making it the opposite of a peaceful world. This song is saying that the bombs just need to stop falling. |
Archers of Loaf – Chumming the Oceans Lyrics | 17 years ago |
my fave archers song too.. dunno if the diver's getting eaten (yet?) ... my take is that the water's red cuz of the chum.. but the exact nature of the looming danger is still unknown |
Daniel Johnston – Living Life Lyrics | 17 years ago |
God this is such, such an amazing song. Go and listen to Eels' live version - Live in Town hall. I just listen in awe. |
Blind Guardian – Skalds And Shadows Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The skalds were to the Viking-age Scandinavia/Iceland area what bards were to feudal Europe. This song captures and celebrates the essence of skalds in the exact same way The Bard's Song (in the Forest) celebrated bards. |
Sabaton – Panzer Battalion Lyrics | 17 years ago |
At first I thought this song was about Germanys Afrika Korps during WW2. Passages such as "on course to the east" (from Libya into Egypt) and the fact that the track is called Panzer Battalion supported this. But I'm pretty sure this track is really about the second war of Iraq. Take for example the line "this time we're here to finish a job started a decade ago", it's obviously refering to the first war of Iraq one decade before the current one. Also near the end the line "Blow their SAM sites clear for air strike" gives away the hint that it couldn't be about a 1940's conflict, there just weren't SAM systems at that point in time. So my conclusion is that this song is not about WW2 as I first thought, but rather Iraq war 2. |
The Only Ones – You've Got To Pay Lyrics | 17 years ago |
@cornersoul Yeah it is definitely "use" so I updated it. Cheers |
Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics | 17 years ago |
When I heard the opening line: "Don't hold yourself like that You'll hurt your knees" I immediately pictured a girl/woman sitting on a bed or the floor with their knees pulled up and their arms wrapped tightly around their knees. They have just listened to a break up speech and they are slowly rocking and trembling. Tears are just starting to run down their cheeks. They are hugging their legs so tighly they might crush them. |
Dethklok – Dethklok Deththeme Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I heard a demo of this song and the beginning is clearer, they're not saying 'do anything for dethklok' its 'doodle-eee-ding-dong-tick-tock' I reckon thats the sound a dethklok makes. |
Opeth – Harvest Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It reminds me of the story of Rome and Julia. They both would die for eachother. Eventually Romeo takes his own life because he thinks that Julia is dead. This unlimited desire to be together would explain the line: "wiltered scenes for us who couldn't wait". They coudn't wait to be together forever And Romeo killed himself, just to be with his loved one in the afterlife. That might be what is meant by: "but it's me who's the martyr" (he died for someone else) . I think it makes sense. |
U2 – The First Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it is close to what people are saying above. However, I think it takes a different view if you replaced the "singer" as Jesus... the lover being Mary Mag... interesting. |
Carissa's Wierd – You Should Be Hated Here Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I hear: Do your time to prove it all, In the ruined lines round my eyes, You'll know the scars upon my head were only meant to spell apologies There's a ten point deer that someone said was impossible to find But until you find it on the freeway Standing stupid looking blind (Never though I could do anything right, didn't mean to say that you were wrong) (This night is guaranteed to all turn black with memories that haunt the past) |
Sugarcult – Shaking Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Maybe it's just me, but I've thought that it could also be them dancing...but yeah, it's sex. |
The Only Ones – Why Don't You Kill Yourself? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Once I had a mission Turned into affliction You never listened when I told you it was terminal Demons sent to tempt ya Fire wouldn’t melt ya I would have helped you but you always did cry wolf Why don’t you kill yourself? You ain’t no use to no-one else Why don’t you kill yourself? You ain’t no use to no-one else You called out from the gutter I couldn’t hear the words you muttered Then you discovered hell and paid the full price Angels sent to tempt ya Desire couldn’t melt ya This ain’t no missionary’s speech Just some friendly advice Why don’t you kill yourself? You ain’t no use to no-one else Why don’t you kill yourself? You ain’t no use to no-one else I heard you had your stomach pumped four times already this week You chose to gamble with love And you just been on a losing streak |
Young Knives – She's Attracted To Lyrics | 17 years ago |
me and my little brother were listening to this on the car radio, now he goes around yelling "I WAS SCREAMING AT YOUR MUM AND PUNCHING YOUR DAD" it is cute. |
Klaus Nomi – Lightning Strikes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The lyrics for this song are way ahead of even our own time. You see, Herr Klaus knew that when you listen to this song you'll say to yourself, "Crikey that was off the deep end." But what you don't know, and what Herr Klaus damn well knew is that you'll tell one of your friends, maybe even a loved one, that they have "just got to check this out, it's way out there." By the time you show them it and the song is over, it's too late. The next day you find yourself telling more people about this song, you even catch yourself singing this song in the bathroom when nobody is around, "LIGHTNING STRIKING AGAIN." You'll wiki Klaus Nomi, read his backstory, dig up pictures of him, and even pirate some mp3s of him off google. Before you know it you've already ordered his self titled vinyl off e-bay, "LIGHTNING STRIKING AGAIN" you sing to yourself with satisfaction. Then it hits you, you're completely and utterly obsessed with Herr Klaus. You have his entire back catalog, his greatest hits album, you're even thinking of dressing up as him for Halloween. The best part is, all of your friends have all doing the same. It's not until when Halloween strolls around do you realize what has happened. The 31st of October has turned it's self into the ending from V for Vendetta, except instead of Guy Fawkes masks, everyone looks like a rejected character from a Tim Burton film. And when that day finally comes, then and only will Herr Klaus come back to life. And after all the dust settles and the world is once blessed with "that weird looking opera singer in some punk band seen hanging out with David Bowie, what was his name, Claude Neon?" The only thing you will have to say for yourself is "LIGHTNING STRIKING AGAIN!" You have those jerks over at Adult Swim to thank for letting the Venture Bros. Episode 12, "Showdown at Cremation Creek," make it through the editing process and whoever it was that uploaded the episodes to You Tube to thank. Seriously, after you watch the music video for this song on You Tube, look for it, you'll die of laughter, that is, if you manage to stop singing. "LIGHTNING STRIKING AGAIN!" |
Amon Amarth – Asator Lyrics | 17 years ago |
So.. Asator is Thor? Is that an alternate spelling? |
Green Day – One for the Razorbacks Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There's a mistake in the lyrics, at the end of the second verse it should say "somehow" instead of "now" Anyway, I absolutely love this song! One of the best of them |
Arcade Fire – Crown of Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is terrific, but I can't get over the Freudian stuff in it. I don't just mean mom/bedroom - I'm thinking of "your name is the only word that I can say." It's as if the speaker's love for his (ex?)girlfriend has made him so desperate and emotional that he's reverted to infancy, only able to cry out for his mama (whom the girlfriend has taken the place of). Now THAT's codependency. Or at least complete and utter dependence. And, also, pretty gross to think about. |
My Chemical Romance – The Sharpest Lives Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think "I'll be sure to remember" is really "give me a shot to remember" |
The Hold Steady – Chillout Tent Lyrics | 17 years ago |
comments: "piet" = "P.A." "activating charcoal" = "activated charcoal" |
Chavez – Break Up Your Band Lyrics | 17 years ago |
