Ok while the first interpratation of this song is very broad, knowing of what the ghost dance's message and history was it helps with the song.
The Ghost dance, at least the last one which was the most widespread, spread all across the west, it said that a messaih had come to the whites and they had killed him. He was going to come again to his red children and an apocolypic event would come and wipe the white man off the continent and restore the earth to the way it was before they came. the dead ancestors would also rise and walk again. To a demoralized people this was a hope for salvation. As I recall crazy horse never participated in a ghost dance and died before he knew of it. Wounded Knee occured because of a ghost dance the Souix were ordered to stop dancing and refused so the us army came out and massacred them. The ghost dance like so many other parts of the native religons of this country were made illiegal whiuch is strange since in the bill of rights everyone is entitled to practice their own religon. There is almost no page of European-NativeAmerican history where the europeans are not responsible for the blood shed. |

wow nothing, to me this songe means: "I have dealt with your crap when it pissed me off but i am sick of your shit i am leaving, i don't know why i didn't do this earlier you don't appreciate me" the part about the trial gives the idea that the woman doesn't see what she has done wrong and when she does she will realize he was right to leave her. and you can say i am wrong but i won't cry a while, it all just a matter of opinion |

well as with everything everyone brings in their own views. i have said this before but some of dylan's 60's stuff is probably drug induced ramblings and he got a kick out of people trying to figure out what he is trying to convey. But i shall stab at it with what it means to me. to me it is talking about how women girls whatever you wish to call them, can be flirtatious and will just play with you like a toy while you are doped up and being in love. I am surprised that this hasn't been ripped to shreds. |

it really depends which version you listen to the accoustic one that is on bootleg disc 1-3, really makes the song feel much more of the "I want to be with you. you might not know it, you can be with some one else but i still love you." were as the more upbeat live versions from two of his other albums which are sung as duets i think gives the feeling of two lovers who have parted but still have feelings for each other |

ok i just signed up after seeing the lack of commentary on this song. i have always felt that it is talking about the way people with power or who recieve power go a little nuts. first few verses about the city counsel trying to bring back a dead horse. and in latter parts it talks about how people try to keep their power through flattery or making people feel important the king of the phillistines for instance. but i must say that the drugged period of dylan is a very unique and abstract form of conveying messages. honestly some probably mean nothing and he is laughing at fools like us trying to analyize everything |
