Passion Pit – Sleepyhead Lyrics 13 years ago
I thought the writer of this song said it was dedicated to an ex-girlfriend that basically got sick of him and her image of him was lazy, sleeping all day.

She broke up in a huff and puff (the 'burst') with all the royalty (the 'lions') of conviction.

Funnily, he said her reaction to this song based on her was "mer...".

Stand! to mean "Take a Stand" and being "I care less" of someone's differences of color, religion, or sex. Just take a stand on what you know is wrong.

I can hear this 10 times and 5 times I hear "There goes-a Robert. E. Lee" and 5 times it's just the transition from "goes" to "Robert".

The Band – The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Lyrics 13 years ago
Specifically accurate actually. Helm as said it's not a specific date of record, but maybe like you saying "By Labor Day I was back in college" and being told "a little off...you arrived August 31st.". Same kind of distinction.

The Band – The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Lyrics 13 years ago
not exactly saying "the" Robert E. Lee. more like a Southern "-a" like "There goes-a Robert E. Lee". And it has been documented that while he never went to Tennessee, many Southerners have "sworn" to seeing Robert E. Lee passing through. And that's what I think he's saying.

The Band – The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Lyrics 13 years ago
Debateable that he should receive 100% credit for writing it. Helm sent him there to speak with people, and the two went to the library near Big Pink to do research. So likely Helm significantly contributed and the writter material was simply submitted by Robertson. As you may know, Helm refuses to sing this song and won't speak to Robertson after the handling of The Last Waltz and Manuel's funeral.

I really dislike this song and it has made the Killers less popular to me. Sounds so cheesy and Human League ish.

The National – Fake Empire Lyrics 15 years ago
So I think this is about going out, getting drunk/buzzed in new york city.

New York is the Empire state, so named after the apple (Empire apples), not the Empire State Building.

Go out picking apples... shiny city... fake empire...

Now "It's hard to keep track of you falling through the sky" I see that it's about him feeling that way. It's hard to keep track of her while he feels he's falling... the spins.

Can anyone comment on the image associated to this song? The four of them outside a church, but it appears above them is a picture of them also. Curious about that picture above them.

Elton John – Daniel Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that Daniel is a soldier who went to Vietnam and died. I think his brother remembers that he used to love going to Spain.

And if that makes sense, I can see why "God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes" would be an appropriate lyric of sad remembrance.

And that's why I feel he "misses him so much", etc.

The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics 16 years ago
Well the moulin rouge video II makes it clear to me.

The enticing woman is seen from both sides, by Flowers as the singer and my Eric Roberts as the older player version of Flowers. Each member of the band has an older guy there.

So it's kind of about his ex-girlfriend, but moreover what it did to him and seeing yourself change in a way that messes you up.

If you watch the video, Eric Roberts clothing starts to look more like Flower's clothing (gold vest, etc) and it's a pretty cool video.

The Vapors – Turning Japanese Lyrics 16 years ago
Would say it's more about love turning to obsession and wanting a million pictures of his interest. Then it's turning Japanese as an ode to their photography obsession.

A bunch of you here may have 'established' it's about masturbation, but then the writer is fairly clean when he's saying it's not.

Franz Ferdinand – The Fallen Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it tricks all the desperate, religous people into thinking that every song is about religion just because it references that.

Look, this is a song saying their friend who stole, was kicked out of high society was more virtuous than today's so-called virtous religious folks.

Maybe their is a God, but seems like the ones who claim to be virtuous do everythign the Bible says they shouldn't and the "fallen" are the ones who are normal and virtuous in that "judgement" is for God and not the religious.

Paolo Conte – Gli Impermeabili Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that the music takes the care of lyrics...the use of string instruments takes your mood up and up.

But this is about a possible re-kindling of a romance. Maybe even what to others think of the two of us...depends on the story that is told.

Gli Impermeabili = the raincoats.

The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics 16 years ago
All, he's just seeing himself change from a nice guy to a bit more darker, player guy. It was only a kiss is what a nice guy would want, but as he falls asleep he's seeing her leave to HIM having a smoke and sex ensues.

E.g. One little kiss has made him feel he's losing his innocence and maturing into a dude. And he's paying the price by not liking what he sees. He can't control his own mind as he falls asleep and dreams this. He hates himself for changing into the dude.

Mr. Brightside is an aweseom tune with a great beat. It stays in my top 10 still.

Something about mail not getting from one town directly to another was a the basis. So you couldn't mail letters to Philomath directly...something like that.

But then he's using that to talk in general about going to a simpler place and simpler time.

R.E.M. – What's the Frequency, Kenneth? Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm going to refute Gleemer, though I do recall Violent Green in Seattle.

Ok, Richard Linklater's slacker was a major influence on this song. Hence 'Richard said "withdrawl in disgust is not the same as apathy"' comes from Slacker.

But "Lady Slings the Blues" by Spider Robinson. The character in 'Lady' wears a shirt of violent green.

As for "What's the Frequency", that is definitively the Dan Rather attacker and the saying has become mainstream.

So I think this is an ode to Spider Robinson's work and it uses Slacker and the Rather attack to denote the delusional world Robinson wrote of and how it made Stipe feel (the reading on the fiction).

Cat Stevens – How Can I Tell You Lyrics 16 years ago
I like the re-dub by Cat Powers for the de Beers holiday commercial where a man sneaks to a window, gets a necklace and comes to bed, places it on her neck and pretends to sleep again.

She only sings "How can I tell you that I love you, I love you
but I can't think of right words to say
I long to tell you that I'm always thinking of you
I'm always thinking of you, but my words" in the commercial and never re-recorded the whole song. So you cannot get it on itunes or other.

But I think she did the song justice with more emphasis and beauty of her voice than Cat Stevens did.

Regina Spektor – Fidelity Lyrics 16 years ago
It means she's caught (e.g., breaks her heart) for 2 reasons:

1. Falling in Love and getting hurt ("suppose I never...")
2. Protecting her heart and not enjoying love.

It breaks her heart either way...so all of the voices she hears in her mind (people's advice, love songs) only adds to this.

Gwen Stefani – Wind It Up Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about sex, and nothing more.

You've got to let the beat get under your skin
You've got to open up, and let it all in
But see, once it gets in, the poppin' begins
And then you find out, why all the boys stare

The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's not a prostitute, but someone he just kissed and is Mr. Brightside because he was optimistic (him and her). But when he sleeps he's not optimistic and sees her leaving with another guy going much further thank he did.

It is all in his head, but it's making him jealous even if there is nothing to be jealous of.

R.E.M. – Nightswimming Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, sportcarder said it:

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
could not describe nightswimming.

Tragedy of Orion (the Hunter): killed by his lover Artemus when she couldn't see him swimming at night.

September is coming soon (moon is in Virgo, August), time for tradedy of Orion.

Japanese version of Orion is a constellation that forms a drum....the bright, tight forever drum.

So while this song has to do with a sadness of an innocence of summer nightswimming lost, it cannot compare to the tragedy of Orion (e.g., it could not describe Nightswimming).

Check out http://www2.gol.com/users/stever/orion.htm for the Japanese take on Orion as a drum.

My Chemical Romance – Welcome To The Black Parade Lyrics 17 years ago
I like the song and think the concept (death comes to you thru you're fondest memory) is a good angle.

To say MCR sold out is like saying every band that produces a good, well-received (e.g., sells) album is a sell out. Apparently Led Zeppelin and the Beatles are the biggest sellouts of all time.

It's not coincidence that Green Day and MCR did a similar concept album (not similar concept, but similar that their last albums were concepts). Their both on Reprise.

James Blunt – Tears And Rain Lyrics 17 years ago
Well again..I think there is a touch of Blade Runner...

"find comfort in pain": Roy Batty drives a nail through his hand just to feel the pain to stay alive.

"How I wish I could choose between Heaven and Hell": Roy can't...he's a replica...not human...can't choose based on his actions.

"Tears and Rain": Roy: "It will all be lost...like Tears in Rain"

"Shed the clothes that become my skin": His skin was fake and synthetic.

James Blunt – Tears And Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree that this is evokative of Roy Batty in Blade Runner...seems he (a "dying", perfect android) wanted to just live but knew he couldn't. He would not go to Heaven or Hell because he wasn't human. His "crimes" were running away from android slavery.

See Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?" for further insight.

David Bowie – All the Young Dudes Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about the scene in London for many folks (as pointed out in an earlier post)...but Mott did it first and the "correct" lyrics are theirs. Bowie liked the song and got to do his cover of it (changing names and sayings like marks & sparks to unlocked cars so Americans wouldn't have to ask what marks & sparks is).

Mott got to do background work on Aladin Sane as "payment" for the song (before licensing became en vogue).

It's more of a Bohemian anthem than a strictly gay anthem, but to each his/her own!

Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Lyrics 18 years ago
Taupin wrote this about he and Elton being essentially country guys who quickly fell into city life, got taken advantage of (by people, industry, etc.) and yearned for the simpler life. Taupin especially had a run in with a woman that is the main "person" in this song.
