If you ever get the chance to see them perform it in concert, there's nothing like 20,000 people singing the "WOO OOOH"s during ELEVATION! I don't take this song as being too deep but it's still a fun song. |

I think it's more about someone who's gone too far in his religious beliefs and is a crazed fanatic. "I went out walking .. with a Bible AND A GUN"??? Christians aren't exactly known for being gun-toters unless they slip off the edge of sanity. Good song nevertheless and Johnny Cash does a great job (as per usual). It was neat to see Bono sing it during the tribute show on TV to the late Mr. Cash. |

What I get out of FAST CARS is how overwhelming being constantly exposed to information through modern technology can be. The person in the song is not even "used to talking to somebody in their body" (i.e. they spend a lot of time online in chat rooms, forums, only use instant tellers, pay bills online, etc, etc). It probably describes a lot of people these days who've become isolated from people even though they "communicate" through online forums and such. I saw them perform it live for the first time ever in Toronto and was blown away that they did it! Musically and lyrically it is a great song and so much different than the rest of the album. I have the B-side version which is on the ALL BECAUSE OF YOU single. |
