I totaly agree with you Corpsed. That is how I discovered Leadbelly 2 years ago. I am a big Nirvana fan. I also love folk, bluegrass, and some country(Johnny Cash). I know grunge and these favorites of mine are a strange combination, but somehow Kurt Cobain found it an influence as well. I have found that I love Leadbelly's music as well as his interesting life. He has had an influence on countless artists. Finally me and my Grandpa have something we can listen to together. |

This song is based on Leadbelly's song, On Monday. The opening lyrics follow it exactly, the rest have similar lines. Cash made it better as far as I am concerned. If you don't know Leadbelly, do yourself a favor and find out about him. Nirvana did a cover of his song: Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Leadbelly's music has influenced countless bands and songs. Leadbelly died in the late 1940's. |

No offense intended NO CODE 79. But I can see how some could be taken by what I said. I may have become a little jaded in my old age of 27. I do know that Kurt liked to deny that his lyrics really had much meaning at all. But I'm sure they did. I just don't know what they were in some songs. Kurt said in an interview that the "Serve the Servents" lyric "Teenage angst has paid off well now I'm bored and old", was definately something he felt, but he said the song changed subjects after that line. Heart Shaped Box definately had some meaning to him. Good luck figuring it out for yourself. Thats all anybody can do. Find what the song means to you. What I think is important, is that someone spend time writing there own songs and music. |

I can't believe no posts for this song! Its about the road to depression and insanity. It is a long road and the "degradation trip" is about drug or alcohol use/abuse. It takes awhile, but his friend Layne Staley eventually got there. It is basicly Jerry's song about the cycle of "do drugs because things suck" and the eventual "things suck because I do drugs". Or it may be even deeper than that. This "solitude" is the real problem, but drugs and booze helped for awhile. Now they help very little, but I have no better alternative. I hate the drugs, I hate were I am now, I hate everything. Shit! Fuck it. I am goin to get high. The cycle of shit keeps goin on. Until insanity takes you. |

Your Kurt Cobain quotes continue to amaze me Kafei. Every time I come back to this site, I find a new perspective posted by Kafei. I really enjoy them. You might be interested to know that Kurt's music lives on like a good story that keeps being told. I just played a set last weekend on accoustic guitar in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The songs I played and sang at the Bar were: Where did you sleep last night, About a girl, Dumb, and All apologies. The crowd really seemed to like the Nirvana songs, if applause is any judge of it. Just wanted to fill you in that there are people out here perfoming Nirvana songs today, not with the same voice as Kurt or the same guitar style, but with passion for what Nirvana stood for. Just as Kurt tried to evoke imagery in his music as is found in paintings, I try to convey the same message when I play his songs live, as well as when I play my own songs. Oh yeah, if you have never seen his paintings on canvas, do a search on the web. One example is the Incestiside album cover. |

Mustaine went to Ireland for a show, and basicly told the IRA what a piece of shit they were from the stage. The IRA is the Irish Republican Army. The two religious factions in Ireland have been fighting for hundreds of years. Mustaine had the balls to say during a show there, that he was of Irish ancestry and thought there stupid war needed to stop. He was boo'd by the crowd and had to leave early. He received death threats and barely escaped out of the country with his skin intact. I'll be the first one to say this song has been overplayed. Nirvana had other songs that were better, but most don't know them. This was the song that made everyone wake up and listen. That's why it deserves respect. This site is close to having the most posts for one song. What could be better than Nirvana getting more respect/recognition. I hate the posers as much as you. It's me again. Just to clarify how Nirvana became mainstream. This song, SLTS, broke the band. Before that they only got air play on college radio. This wasn't part of the plan for Kurt. Thats why he recorded In Utero. He supposedly thought it would alienate those people that were not true punk rock fans. I think Kurt couldn't help but write popular music because he liked some popular music. Every musician has influences. But Kurt was loyal to underground punk rock and having fans that didn't understand the roots of punk just pissed him off, apparently. I remember Nirvana as having Hits and also great songs that mainstream radio wouldn't touch with a 10 foot stick. |

I am new here. I am 26 and have a feelin you all are young. I think that is the most awesome thing! Kurts legend won't die as long as people keep listening. The fact that this music spans generations means something. I discovered Nirvana in '92. At first I felt it was just for me and my friends(OUR generation). No one else understood. But I soon realized I was wrong. There were many who got Kurt's message. Then He left us. I am glad I found this site. Its good to see people still talking about what Nirvana left us. It is far to POTENT and REAL to be left behind for VH1 and MTV to analyze. Don't let them tell you what it means. Too many cynics have used Nirvana for there own use. Basterds. It is what it means to you. I hate to think that because he killed himself he attracted fans, but it happened. Forget all the hype and listen! For all you conspiracy theorists, he did kill himself. All it takes is a look at the facts. I have looked at both sides of the story and listened to every song of Kurt's for years. The evidence is in the lyrics and what we know of his personal life.
