I believe when he is saying nothing changes on new years day, he is referring to the ongoing war, how everything is still the same. No peace, etc...

U2 – New Year's Day Lyrics 13 years ago
If you watch the video, the song is about a soldier in war time that has been seperated from his loved one. In his mind, or through letters, he is telling her that they will be together again. I feel like somehow, in the middle of the story he dies thus the lines "torn in two we can be one" he then goes on to say "I, I will be hear again" perhaps he is talking about here as their home and, though dead, he is saying he will be with her in spirit form.

I think sleepy is right. I believe Esthero is talking about having an affair with a married man or a man with a girlfriend. The lyrics are pretty obvious to that.

I kind of agree with this. The first time I read the lyrics, I felt she was talking about having affairs with a man with a girlfriend or a wife.

Atmosphere – Smart Went Crazy Lyrics 14 years ago

Here are my breakdowns:

"I'm a act like there's poison in the pancakes and amputate the one that wasn't loyal with the handshakes"

-He's going to be very cautious of people, of what they offer, and he's going to cut off, not literally, but figuratevly, that smile in his face but are not sincere behind his back.

"Never sold coke and I never had to hold a pistol
Civil and simple, but set the freakshow
Loose on the nipple, watch her whole fuckin titty ripple
It's why we battle, it's why we travel
It's why the mascott thinks that I'm an asshole
We made the team without puttin on a uniform
Smart went nuts and rode a unicorn through the storm"

I'm not exactly sure what he was trying to say with the nipple part, but the rest of it, I feel that he's talking about major record companies. Tons of them have sent Atmosphere deals since they began blowing up, but they've decline them. The mascot would be the record company. They think he's an asshole because "he never sold coke and had to hold a pistol and made the team without putting on a uniform" which basically means that he never conformed to the image that record companies try to sell and promote in rap, which is the thug rapper, yet he still managed to make the "team" which is the group of rappers that are commercially and critially successful. Putting on the uniform would mean joining a major label and giving in to their standards of what they want you to be.

I think the part tourdates ate my little brother's courtcase basically means that tourdates prevented him from being able to be there for his little brother during his courtcase.
There are parts of this song that I don't get like the disarm the alarm part, and some other parts.

It's a great song though.

I've heard on several occasions that this song has to do with falling in love with a black woman. What's the explanation behind that?

This song could be symoblism for something else or it can just describe a relationship with a woman who is cold to him, basically dead to the world. It's pretty dark and graphic.

I gotta give props to the person that typed these lyrics. Usually when I see lyrics posted by other people on here they're filled with mistakes. This is the most on point reproduction I've seen on this site so far. There were some parts of this song that I didn't know what exactly Nas was saying.

Like the "Super Lover Cee and Casanova" line. He said it too fast in the song. It takes a good ear to pick that one out. Also, I always thought he said "The doo rags and black fitted hats, snorkels and furs."

Good job.

You look insanely wack with juch a fraction of my tracks run

"I'm sliming grills of roaches, with sprayed on disinfectants
With some ex rappers till their spinal column disconnects
We disinfect then check the monologue, turn your system up
Twist them up, and indulge in the marijuana smoke"

put this in decks, and check the monologue
turn your system up twist 'em up and indulge in the marijauna smog

Cage – Shoot Frank Lyrics 17 years ago
Man, this song gives me chills.

I interpreted these lines:
"The sun says wake up with a beam in my eyes
Clutchin' the bed like she's still by my side part of me died
Even when I prescribed still just to be ostracized
'Cuz she don't really know if she wants to ride or drive"

As the sun being hope. It's clutching the bed like it's still by his side even though so many bad things have happened to him. Part of him died from the tears of it still lingering even through impossible situations. He prescribed to it--he took it in, but still he was put down by others. It hasn't yet made the decision if it will push him--drive-- or just be by his side as a light at the end of the tunnel.

I might just be reaching, though.

The line "I've tied off a limb debating" Is so real to me, because even though I'm not a herion addict, I have an addiction and I know just how that moment where you're fighting to stay clean but have that voice in your mind pushing you to comit the habit feels. It's sung with such heartbreaking preciseness.

Nas – If I Ruled the World (Imagine That) Lyrics 17 years ago
The only line a have a problem with is "I'd open every cell in Attica, send 'em to Africa."

I'm African and this line rubs me the wrong way. You can look at it as he's saying that Africa is the most beautiful place on earth so he'd open all the cells to those that have done wrong and send them somewhere that can change their lives. Or you can look at it like he's saying that Africa is a place of lions, animals and savages so he'd open all the cells of a prison that confines some of the worst in society and send them a place where they can run rampant and wild, killing each other off.

Splif star is a terrible typer. Half of the things he has on here are the wrong lyrics. It's Mother's as in mother is, not mother of. He typed a bunch of the Nas lyrics on this site on January 7th. I think his brain must have fried in the process.

Nas – Suspect Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is Suspect Niggaz, you dope. I think you're one of the worst typers on this site.

Anyways, the thing I love about this song is the engineer work. The production sounds so dark--it brings out that cloudy days, Qb project, young black intellectual gangster feel to it. This production is the way most of It was Written was like. It's what makes it such a memorable album.

Nas – Life's A Bitch Lyrics 17 years ago
And I agree that Nas had the better verse. To me "I switched my motto, instead of saying fuck tommorow, that buck that bought the bottle could have struck the lotto"

are the best lines in the song. That line is so deep. It's like him saying he learned to take chances instead of throwing them away for something so trivial.

Nas – Project Windows Lyrics 17 years ago
First off, I've gotta say that the typer of this song made several mistakes. you should listen to the song for yourself.

This song is so memorable. A classic. Ron Isley is a G.

Nas was incredibly poetic on this song. Some lines that really got me where:

"Crippled dope fiends in wheelchairs stare
vision blurry, cus buried deep in they mind are hidden stories"

"Bet he's a mirror image of that 70's era
finished for the rest of his life, till he fades out
The liquor store workers miss him but then it plays out
so many ways out the hood but no signs say out
Mental slavehouse where gats go off, I show off
niggas up north, prison-ology talk, till they time cut off
"

"Stack loot and guns, teach the girls karate, school your sons not to hate
but to stay awake, cus the scars a razor make is nothin' in comparison
to the gas left on this whole mass, if we don't get it controlled fast
might as well be, laughin' with Malcolm X's assassin as we die slow
perishin', brain dead from a Erickson
Words are the medicine, two teaspoons for goons
a cup of it for those thuggin' it, y'all sing the tune"

Another day, another dollar, my mother would
She said go and see the world for myself, and my brother should falla
Pops was smooth, from his top to his shoes
sang the blues, guitar strings he played smokin' his doo
? hat, picture this, yo, seventies cat
He wrote his music in the back of the crib, I did my homework
At night the windows were speakers, pumpin' life out
a fight, people screamin' cus somebody pulled a knife out
So I look at this room, I'm hooked to this tune
every night the same melody, hell sounded so heavenly
But jail was ahead of me, speeding like an amphedamine

Nas – Memory Lane (Sittin' In Da Park) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is sick. It has a real reflective instrumental. I love the female vocals. Nas bugged me out on several lines:

"I rap divine Gods check the prognosis, is it real or showbiz?
My window faces shootouts, drug overdoses
Live amongst no roses, only the drama, for real
A nickel-plate is my fate, my medicine is the ganja"

"my pen taps the paper then my brain's blank
I see dark streets, hustlin brothers who keep the same rank
Pumpin for somethin, some uprise, plus some fail
Judges hangin niggaz, uncorrect bails, for direct sales
My intellect prevails from a hangin cross with nails
I reinforce the frail, with lyrics that's real"

Nas – Last Words Lyrics 17 years ago
The instrumental of this, the woman's voice, and Nas' verse give this song a haunting feel to it. Nas' verse on this song is one of the most powerful verses I've ever read/heard. He made the prison cell into a real life monster. It's crazy. On the hook they say "last words of a hanging slave." The thing about this song is that anything that enslaves you--an addiction, evil, another person..etc-- can very well be the prison cell Nas was describing.

Nas – The Message Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is pretty much ambigous until you ask Nas who he was talking about on certain lines. I think the intro-- "fake thug, no love, you get the slug, CB4 gusto your luck low I didn't know till I was drunk, though" is about 2 pac. I was on a Nas board, a while back, and someone said that 2 pac and Nas had a meeting at a bar before both disses were released. Pac talked to him in great depth--I think the "I didn't know till I was drunk, though" is in reference to that meeting.

Then this line-- "You freak niggaz played out, get fucked and ate out
Prostitute turned bitch, I got the gauge out"

I think he's calling Tupac a prostitue because many people fell that the whole East coast West coast beef was created by Tupac as a way of furthering his record sales. I think Nas is calling him a prostitue of the recording industry.

I can't really say where he was trying to go with the little story in the second verse. Pretty crazy song.

Nas – I Gave You Power Lyrics 17 years ago
Ghostface, that's an interesting take on the song, but I think it's wrong.

It's easy to see that he's talking about a gun simply by listening to the last line of the hook-- "I gave you power, I made you buck wild." You can see that the hook is told in first person, the gun as the narrator.

To me, it's a song about a gun with feelings, and it is genius, not because he's just using personification, it's what he's trying to say.

I think Nas is flipping is giving the gun the point of view because so many people use guns, but, God, imagine how a gun would feel about its usage and you can see how horrific and senseless some acts commited by people that use guns can be.

It's just a way to show how insane it all can be.

I think the song is about him wanting to destroy someone and leave them feeling empty like he does because of the loss of his childhood. But, this is the problem with many rock song: They're so ambiguious that you often can't understand what in the hell that artist was trying to say. So often, the artist can just throw together some junk and make it sound deep.

I'm not sure what level of education you guys reached, but to claim that he's dissing America in this song is absurd. Listen to the lyrics, he's questioning why he should go to war and have more killings when we saw how bad war can be with 9/11. I don't see how that's dissing America. If anything he's questioning the people in power not insulting the country. And, a until you're black, you have no right to speak on what blacks should do. God, shut up.

Dave Matthews Band – Big Eyed Fish Lyrics 18 years ago
What I get from this song is that Dave is presenting God as a person that tells us that though things are hard that we have to stick through it. I think Dave is presenting God as a stern figure here. The other side to me represents the bad things that people do to cope.. like smoking, drinking, or whatever. In the song he says, "But under the weight of life,
Things seem much brighter on the other side."

Yes, things seem so much brighter on the other side, whatever thing it is we do to cope, but eventually we falter and fail on the other side because they're illusionary utopias and they're not made for us. Dave says "no way out," quite candindly in this song. It's most likely Dave at one of his lowest points, realizing that there's no way out, that you just have to endure the weight of life.

Dave Matthews Band – Warehouse Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, the song is about a person that is on the verge of commiting suicide. The warehouse is symbolic of the world, you see that in the begining of the song the guy is saying that this place, the world, frightens him and he's ready to slip away. Then the part that says "hey restless mind don't throw away your playfull beginings" that's representative of the conscience or someone else telling the guy to not throw away his past, when things where good. As far as the leaving the lights on part goes, I think it's just saying.. we'll make sure to remember things, see it clearly-- like leave the lights on-- . The advisor, or conscience is saying things will change and you'll see your bad luck changing.

Then at the end, after listening to the advice given to him, and after seeing things for what they are, he's regretfull that he's dying and he sees how good life can be.

Great song, that's just what I got from it.
