Chris Pureka – Burning Bridges Lyrics 14 years ago
Allow me to gush. If you desire interpretation read no further.

I love to relate to song writers. This song is full of imagery that's important to me.

* I'm a bridge burner historically.
* I get angry enough to break things (especially in romance).
* The truth about bridge burning is it requires time to pass before you can repair them. Ours is a life of forgiveness and reconciliation, for all people.
* you can't choose who you love.
* you can't choose who you love. (did I say that alreayd? let me say it again)

this is a story about loving and learning. you can't just pass the pain along. and sometimes you say "you know nothing can happen". this takes us all a few tries to figure this stuff out.

And this:

this is a story of loaded glances
and leaning in too far
this is a story of vague advances
and confessions in smoky bars

this verse is so amazing

Lou Barlow – If I Could Lyrics 14 years ago
What if it's me unequal, I'm the one who's not
Excited, forever
Withered in your touch
I'd miss you way too much

What does this mean? I think he's airing the worry that he really digs this chick, but he might have read it wrong and he won't be thrilled to be with her once he's got her ("withered in your touch"). So what's with "I'd miss you way too much?" I am thinking he means in this hypothetical future where he's sick of her he'd miss the person he knows now way too much. Any thoughts?

on a side note, these lyrics are pretty wrong (as the above poster mentioned)

Joni Mitchell – The Last Time I Saw Richard Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of the very few songs which induces almost nothing but pain in me. Objectively I love the lyrics and they have hope wrapped up in them, even if it's not on the surface the whole time. But, just the whole song, the delivery, her voice, the melodies, the words by themselves, it's all very painful. I really like this song, even if I debate reaching for the dial halfway through haha.

Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that saying she is "constant as a northern star" is a semi-compliment, said out of exasperation/frustration from arguing. The narrator's reply is equally exasperated, that she's "constantly in the dark". He's calling her stubborn and she's calling him hard to read. They she gives up and goes to the bar haha. Truthfully, this level of exasperation (sorry to use that so many times) often comes between two people who are crazy about one another. "so bitter and so sweet"

"And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner"
Mark 12:10

The inner glow that lets you know
To call your brother "Son"

This either intentionally refers to Christ or the artist is using Christian language to call himself some sort of messiah.

Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics 16 years ago
We're only referring to this song as misogyny because it is somewhat negative in its view of the specifics of the fairer sex. However, if we call this misogyny, we must call just about every love song which exhorts specifically feminine traits as misogyny as well. Pointing out the good traits that women have over men is OK, but pointing out the bad ones is bad? Whatever.

Before anyone accuses me of generalizing, I will freely admit it. Generalization is useful for anaylsis only, but no one should be forced into the box. I have no problem with equality. In fact, should any woman wish to be treated like a man, I'd oblige with no ill will. However, this would include removing her from the pool of possible mates. Get me?

Men and women are different; deal with it.

This said, the Great Gatsby note made me think of an even better quote which fits the notion of this tune perfectly:

"Dishonesty in a woman is a thing that you can never blame deeply."

Stan Rogers – The Idiot Lyrics 16 years ago
Stan has many songs in this vein, questioning what it is to be free, especially in the face of financial adversity. Usually, however, he makes it clear cut which choice makes a man free. This song almost stuggles with the question. Is a man free in his beautiful home where he belongs living on the government dime or is he free when he adapts to survive and has to leave his beloved home to become self sufficient again. No easy answer, but the character in the song has chosen self sufficiency... and that makes him an idiot, I suppose.

Cat Stevens – Hard Headed Woman Lyrics 16 years ago
I am not even going to touch what Jon said, because it's a little deeper into the song than I wish to be at the moment. That said, it seems a reasonable and insightful set of interpretations.

I personally just relate to wanting a hard-headed woman. Everyone needs others to a certain point. But, to define yourself by your lover is problematic. I am after a woman who does not define herself by me, but still needs me. Yes, a person like this may, as a corollary, be a bit stubborn, but that's okay. I have no right to call anyone stubborn : )

This song hurts me to listen to. I've been there when you're so in love with someone who hurts you and always will. I guess I've played the other role, where I can see how much I affect a certain person and I am affected too, but I know that I hurt them with the things I do. Ugh, this song is so powerful!

It's certainly a first date, there's no doubt about that. Or, basically something similar. It could either be a sweet and innocent first date or it could be a casual encounter in the bar.

It is two people who are attracted to one another, but it's clearly awkward. However, it's the good awkward where both parties are genuinely into one another. Sometimes, you meet a chick and it's so unawkward that there's no attraction. Strange but true. Anyway, this is the good kind of first date awkward. Butterflies and knots and you love it and hate it all at once.

Clearly the guy is trying to think of things they could do or talk about to cap the awkwardness. I love the line "What's your favorite song, maybe we could hum along". Very sweet.

Last thing, the mention of "what's the point of this?" is excellent. Who hasn't thought exactly that on a first date? Basically, they both want to be good together, but they have to get through the awkward phase first. He's lamenting that it can't be so easy. But, that's the nature of it and there's a reason for everything.

Anyway, last thing, I always thought it said "did you know that I CAN'T dance; could we talk for a while?" Seems to make more sense and probably would add to the tension (this seems to be a common thing for guys, myself included).

Anyway, nice little chart.

@localoca13

If I can explain this song in as carnal a way as possible, in my opinion, mankind's most comforting thought is the idea that true loves will be entwined forever. Most religions which acknoledge a sort of afterlife have a very strong belief in marriage (for many believers even to the point of being larger than the religion itself).

In my opinion this song does a good job of seperating the idea of eternal love from eternal life. The song says that eternal love is the purest spiritual quest.even Even if we don't know where we will go together after this world, we'll go together.

Colin Hay – Beautiful World Lyrics 17 years ago
I wanted to separate this comment, because it's goes in a little different direction than the one above.

I do also dislike the complaint about Jesus. I think too many people disagree with other's spiritual views then decide anything in the ballpark must be bad. I can't see how the beauty in the world (and the stark contrast of all the horror) imply that there is no Christ messiah, or God for that matter. In fact, if we imagine an all-powerful, all-good creator, I think the best thing it could do is allow all of mankind to make the mistakes and find the beauty for themselves.

Which one is the better parent, the one who protects his children from every problem they might encounter, or the one who allows his children to boldly face the world even with ideas, opinions and behaviors which might be different or even contrary to the desire of the parent (at the appropriate age and with the appropriate support and guidance)? Obviously, it's the one who let's the children run freely, forging their own ideas and personalities (more and more so as they get older).

The point is, between the world where Jesus is always intervening and the world where Jesus is known only in the deepest hearts and minds of the people, I'll take the latter. If there was no horror in the world to contrast the beauty, would the world be beautiful? To put it in the words of Butthead (of Beavis and Butthead fame), "If things didn't suck, you'd never know when things were cool."

All I am saying is that I think Colin Hay is a little off mark with the Jesus jab there; seeing as how he in part owes all the beauty to the contrast of the horror (in the interest of keeping my point philosophical, I will steer clear of saying that he owes the beauty to Jesus). The fact is if Jesus did intervene, Colin would know of no beauty to write about. Perhaps he should thank Jesus (or, the creator of his choice for that matter) for not directly answering his prayers.

Colin Hay – Beautiful World Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is markedly about the things which increasingly make you happy as you are older.

There's a period of life where all you want to do is party and be crazy. This is true for 90% of people. This song is about getting past that period and back to all the beauty in the world. These are the sort of things which become more worthwhile as you get older.

I do really relate the part about giving up smokes and booze and leaving the party with no regrets. In fact, I relate to almost all of the song; these are the REALLY beautiful things about our world.

I say "getting back" to these things about, because I do think these things are the things that people really love as a kid. As we get older, if we don't pass the burned out phases in life (be it partying, work or anything), we'll never get back to that childlike love of the simplicity of life. What a terrible thing that would be!

How ironic it is that you also love the message (assuming there's no harmless marijuana involved, in which case, it's clearly a message of satan).
