Pinback – Hurley Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song. But I think the lyrics are slightly different.

As I seal myself inside,
the zippers catch my skin,
And as I waddle towards the doorway,
A freezer hits me
As I stumble from my house,
I reach down for the sled,
And as I start to shape my weapon
A cold one hits me!

Elliott Smith – Single File Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh right, I always thought he didn't start using Heroin until later. I stand corrected.
Anyway, I love the electric guitar in this song, especially after the first verse. It's so floaty and ethereal it transports the listener into exactly the state of a mind that Elliott intends. He truly was a musical genius.

Elliott Smith – Everything Reminds Me of Her Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is definitely not about drugs. Welles-radio is spot on. People who think this song is about drugs do not understand Elliott Smith and ought to listen to his music more carefully. There are no way two ways about the interpretation of this one, period.

Who gives a shit about whether they play Elliott on the OC or not? The more people that like him, the better in my opinion!
Anyway, this songs is fucking brilliant. Wow, what a tune, makes you melt and drift away. RIP Elliott, awesome song, amazing songwriter.

José González – All You Deliver Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of my favourites off his great album Veneer. To me, this song documents the way that we always see our lives subjectively. Jose sings about how when we are down (on the verge of ruin) we realise that we have strayed and need to refocus on getting back on track. On the other hand, when we have been successful it is easy to slip into complacency and become arrogant, losing 'track of our soul'.
This song refers to the constant cycle of depression and elation that we as human beings undergo.

Lifehouse were at their peak on 'No Name Face'. This song rocks! Unfortunately, Stanley Climbfall is nowhere near as good. Anyone else agree?

Lifehouse – Somebody Else's Song Lyrics 18 years ago
Although I agree with what nofamelost and plasticflowers have posted, I don't think this song is entirely about the controls society imposes on us.
Instead I think it documents a stage in our lives, when we are growing up and still trying to find our own identities. We constantly try and adopt other people's opinion and pass them off as our own, or like something just because it's cool and think it will reflect well on ourselves if we endorse it. This song is about coming to an age when you realise that to grow into an adult you must form your own objective opinions that aren't totally influenced by what you think they should be, and instead are a true reflection of your inner self. When Jason sings, 'facing myself alone' it is him documenting that he is at that stage of his life now.

Nick Drake – Which Will Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song Nick is singing to a girl he loves but has rejected him. Nick is not bitter, he is just melancholic and reflective in the way he poses her the question who will she choose as the love of her life? However, it can also be applied to the listener in general, as Nick asks us, who will we love forever? A question that is extremely hard to answer, but when found, the key to true happiness.

Nick Drake – Hanging On A Star Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a very sad song. It is Nick saying, 'you see i need help, and yet leave me unaided', 'you can hear what i am saying, and yet don't listen', 'why love me, and not love me'. Very sad, and very true. This is one of Nick's most poignant cries for a better human nature amongst us all.

Nada Surf – Bacardi Lyrics 18 years ago
This song isn't anti-drinking. It's about how sometimes people feel compelled to drink because it helps them socialise and talk to people that when sober they would have no interest in spending time with. This song is about isolation and feeling alone.

Nada Surf – 80 Windows Lyrics 18 years ago
Him and his girlfriend live in an appartment that overlooks another block. They can see 80 different windows out of their window. That is why when he is bored, he looks across the way to see who is in. 'I wonder if they see us in our bed' is him thinking out loud that he wonders whether they look back through their windows and think the same things about him and his girlfriend. Great song!

majii is correct, this song is about falling in love and feeling reborn. Nothing to do with Heaven, only in the sense that he has found a heaven with his lover. This song is amazing, beautiful, brilliant.......the list goes on.

Elliott Smith – Tomorrow Tomorrow Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is Elliott singing about himself from an outside perspective. The people that he doesn't want inside himself are his mum and step-dad, because he doesn't like them. Perhaps they once called him 'failures art' and this has obivously affected him to the point where he thinks it might be true. Instead though he says that tomorrow (ie the future) will prove them wrong as his music becomes widely respected. Awesome song.

Yes, she committed suicide by jumping out of her window into the street below. Ben is incredible in the way he uses the window as a metaphor for the way she views her life, and as the means by which she was able to kill herself.

Ben Folds – Time Lyrics 18 years ago
my fave song off Songs from Silverman, although they are all great. I think this song is about the difficulty of getting over painful break-ups, rather than the prediction of it.
This song is sung from the perspective of one former lover to the other. Although they have split they are still very close, and do everything they can to get over each other.

I always interpreted this song as Elliott criticising anyone who is selling their soul for money. Corporatism vs humanism, that kind of thing.
There are loads of references to this in the lyrics.

Elliott Smith – Single File Lyrics 18 years ago
It's funny. At the time of this album Elliott was not using Heroin and yet as people so clearly document, this song seems so applicable to it.
I have always have seen this song as a reference to how Elliott sees other people. Waiting for something to happen in their lives, whilst disabling themselves with their darkest thoughts and actions that weigh them down everyday. Your arm has got a death in it seems to me a reference to that one hang-up, that one demon, that everyone cannot shake off.
Whilst this might have been written about Heroin, the fact that it can touch so many listeners that aren't Heroin addicts, is clear evdience of how brilliant Elliott Smith was at creating songs that could be enjoyed by all. R.I.P Elliott.

Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics 18 years ago
BTW, I forgot to mention. Elliott Smith was so clearly inspired by the Beatles, that his music is littered with references to them both lyrically and in its melodies. This is one of his most Beatle-esque. R.I.P Elliott, I think you are one of the most talented song writers I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics 18 years ago
The problem with you Americans is that you attach too much importance to yourselves and never has this been more apparent than reading through the interpretations you have given on this site. This song isn't about America, its about Britain, hence the title!
Elliott is on record numerous times stating his love of the UK. Why? Well as this song documents, he feels at home here. Partly because of the drinking culture (if you've ever been here you will know what I am talking about!) but also due to the personality of the average Brit which is stand-offish. This reflected by the lines
"you got a look in your eye
when you're saying goodbye
like you wanna say hi".

I agree with the suggestion that this was inspired by a drinking session with a friend whilst in London. Elliott is an extremely perceptive man, and his subsequent drunken stupor provided him with all sorts of insights into the state of Britain. The song is simply an ode to its condition; a country separated from the rest, with an acute alcohol problem and yet remaining strangely full of charm, homely and individual. Listen again, and this time forget about the USA for the 3 minutes 15 seconds that it plays. Do it more often, and we might all begin to live in a more understanding, peaceful and co-operative world.

Elliott Smith – St. Ides Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm suprised no-one has commented on the beautiful lines,
" the moon is a lightbulb breaking
it'll go around with anyone
but it won't come down for anyone"

To me these words are the essence of the song. They relate to so many different things. The metaphor of using a lightbulb as a shining light in someone's life, whether it is a girl you are in love with or a drug you can't get enough of is so apt. The fact that it is breaking is indicative of how the beautiful innonence of youth is so fragile, and to me conjures up visions of a beautiful young girl that cannot commit to anyone. I love this song. Elliott Smith is one of the best artists I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Nada Surf – In the Mirror Lyrics 18 years ago
Does anyone else out there think that this is a slice of pure pop perfection? I love it, from the way it builds up slowly until it creates a beautiful cascading soundscape to the sofly sung optimistic lyrics that are so life-affirming.
I think Nada Surf are a seriously underrated band. They are great because they don't try to be anything they are not. And this comes across in their great music. Enjoy.

Death Cab for Cutie – A Movie Script Ending Lyrics 18 years ago
Whilst I agree that this song is about a journey back home I also think it is a hidden reference to the thought processes that the singer has when he is stoned.
By saying whenever I come back, the singer is not only referring to the return to his hometown but also to the state of mind he feels when stoned. The lyrics are a perfect description of how everything seems when one is high, such as the reflective lyrics about the people on the bar-stools.
The passing through unconscious states can be seen as a metaphor of how when he gets high he becomes a different person to when he is sober or 'unconscious' because when high he is given the opportunity for his brain to slow down and view everything in a more, detached, rational way.
Of course I am not suggesting that this song is merely about Marijuana, but I do believe that Death Cab wrote this song as a homage to it and the feeling of coming home is akin to the feeling getting high can give to someone who uses it regularly. The examples aforementioned, as well as the incessant singing of 'high-way' are the reasons I feel this way.
