Rilo Kiley – The Execution of All Things Lyrics | 15 years ago |
...makes me think of the holocaust, personally. |
Beck – Soul Of A Man Lyrics | 16 years ago |
No comments? Come on now, I love this song. It's just so catchy and fun to sing along to. Unfortunately I have no idea what it means. Anybody? |
The Dresden Dolls – The Kill Lyrics | 16 years ago |
She changes the lyrics around when playing live a lot. The lyrics on the version they recently put on their myspace are a little bit different, but pretty close I think. It's too early in the morning for me to analyze this song, so at the moment I'm just going to say that I absolutely love it and it's amazing and I'm going to get to see Mandy in June! :D |
Bloc Party – This Modern Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I love this song, but I just have to say... Every time he sings "You told me you wanted to eat up my sadness," I hear: "You told me you wanted to eat up my sandwich". That's all. |
Einstürzende Neubauten – Die Interimsliebenden Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I lost the album booklet, and my German skills need brushing up, so I don't know the exact translation off the top of my head. But "Interimsliebenden" translates into "Interim lovers". This song always reminds me of movie intermissions, especially after he says "im interim" (in the video, there's a pause with a screen that says Interim), and the "interim lovers" always makes me think of the couple at a theatre who's just making out during the movie. I don't have anything to add to its exact meaning, but it's a great song. |
Einstürzende Neubauten – Sabrina Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Another idea: The colors of the German flag are black, yellow, and red. If yellow translates to gold, it could be about the darkness of Germany's past. You know, the nazi regime, et cetera. And of course, ignorant non-Germans automatically think of nazi when they hear "Germany", so the country is still suffering from its past. "A world of ruin all in vain"... obvious, holocaust and whatnot. "All in vain" meaning how nothing but, well, bad-ness came from it. Yeah. "It's in the open but it doesn't get stolen" This line reminds me of a story about Vlad the Impaler; supposedly he left a golden cup or something out in the centre of the town square, by a fountain or something, and nobody stole it for fear of being, well, impaled. And I know that's a completely different, well, region of the earth, but Vlad was a dictator and so was Hitler. Just a thought. "It is as black as Malevich's square" Kazimir Malevich is a russian painter who painted "Black Square" (which is just what it sounds like; a black square). So that's probably just a weird, abstract simile. That's... all I really know. Anyway. That's all. |
Beck – Ramshackle Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a song I never really listen to the lyrics to, but to me it's really weird and calming. I love it. It's just got that... feel to it. I mean, if you really do look into the words it's almost depressing, but if you just listen to his voice and to the music it's kind of soothing. That is, until you get to the bonus track. |
Beck – New Round Lyrics | 17 years ago |
When I listen to this song, I never really listen to the lyrics, but just having it on is strangely... calming, I guess. It's a lot like Ramshackle to me, in that respect. It's really grown on me. |
The Dresden Dolls – Delilah Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Also, according to babynames.com the meaning of the name "Delilah" is "one who weakened". I think that could have something to do why she picked the name Delilah, rather than say, Tina or Amberly. But maybe I'm reading too much into it, who knows. |
The Dresden Dolls – Delilah Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think creative writing and song lyrics are quite different. Creative writing is generally just to tell a story; songs and poetry are often used to alleviate emotion, or as some kind of biography. I can't imagine Amanda just wrote this for kicks. There's got to be a story behind it, like with many (all?) of her other songs - she didn't just pull it out of her ass. She feels it, because it's real, and because it happened. She just decided to turn it into song. But you know, that's just me. Obviously I can't say anything is definitive. I like the idea of the boyfriend being the piano. Amanda does seem to like extenuating metaphors (Mandy Goes to Med School being the prime example), so that would make sense to me. |
Einstürzende Neubauten – Sabrina Lyrics | 17 years ago |
If you've seen the video for this one, it seems to be about, basically, self-loathing. You look in the mirror and try to see beauty. But you don't. You put on something that's supposed to make you pretty. But it doesn't. A brilliant song, most definitely. |
Humanwine – Rivolta Silenziosa Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah, I (admittedly) discovered Humanwine from a link off of the Dolls' myspace thing, and fell in love with them. Brian is a brilliant drummer. The entire band is fantastic though. |
Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song makes me want to puke. Violently. |
The Dresden Dolls – Backstabber Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I always thought she was saying "God I feel for you Fooled you" Like that. Yeah. I have to say, this isn't my favorite song on the album, but it certainly is a good one. |
Daughtry – It's Not Over Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Is it just me or does EVERY SONG STUPID DAUGHTRY DOES SOUND THE SAME? Gah. I liked him when he was on American Idol. He sounded good. But now he just sounds so incredibly mainstream and annoying. I'm blown away by how lame this is. By the way. Ace Young is even worse. He only made itfar because people thought he was hot (though in my opinion he wasn't all that great). Sigh. Hopefully this year will be more... promising. I'm rooting for the fat kid with the afro. |
Humanwine – Rivolta Silenziosa Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Rivolta silenziosa is italian for "silent revolt". It seems to be to be about passive-aggressiveness. Doing without saying. Obviously the last stanza (before the chorus" is talking about a closed mouth, silence: "that wall of bones that holds our tongues in" (teeth in the mouth), etc, etc. I LOVE this song. One of my favorites. It's pretty sad that I'm the only one who seems to listen to Humanwine on this site (or anywhere, really, nobody's ever really heard of them anywhere I ask). |
The Dresden Dolls – Delilah Lyrics | 17 years ago |
All these theories are good (though I don't particularly agree with the prostitute idea), but here's another one to throw into the ballpark: What if Delilah is actually Amanda? I only thought about this because of the schizo thing - Schizophrenia is often associated with multiple personalities, and Delilah could be Amanda's second personality. Metaphorically speaking, of course. From reading stuff on the Dolls' website, Amanda seems like the kind of person who, at a young age, might have been very naive about sex and stuff like that - like Delilah is - so the song could just be about what Amanda used to be. Maybe she struggled with herself because of it - like, she hated what she was doing, being so submissive to her boyfriend who was just be using her for sex - which is where the Amanda narrative "character" comes into play. If this makes sense at all. I dunno, just an idea. I didn't like this song at first as well, but it's really grown on me. |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Tell Me Baby Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Don't get me wrong, I love the peppers and everything... but this song is WAY overrated. |
The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Guys. Double meaning. Amanda is brilliant like that. She can take lyrics and tie multiple meanings into them with no problem. I hate when people are like, "No, it CAN'T be that, this song is DEFINITELY about ____". Because you can't say that. Unless the words are coming straight out the author's mouth, you can't say it's DEFINITELY NOT about getting a sex change, or about abortion, or just sex in general. Double meaning, folks. |
The Dresden Dolls – Dirty Business Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I definitely hear... "Take that!" and then, maybe "Make it match!" Or something. Fucking awesome song. I agree with the highschool reunion-type thing. It certainly sounds plausible. Otherwise, I have nothing to add. |
William Shatner – I Can't Get Behind That Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Ahahaha. I think this song particularly was meant as a joke song. Just listen to it. I mean, I'm sure this stuff bugs him and everything, but I mean, come on. "The leaf blowers... Is there anything more FUTILE?!" It's hilarious. |
Tweaker – Ruby Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm going out on a limb here, but... rape? "and yet in steaming night i smile to downplay this my failing and make a noise to bury all of your weeping and your wailing" Weeping and wailing... steaming night... you know. And also, ruby, the color of blood? I don't know, I'm just guessing. Excellent song. Heheh. I just realized that it was almost a year ago today that I posted the second comment on this song. How...sad. |
Deerhoof – Apple Bomb Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with everything TeN said, except... "The last few lines, starting with "Just like me/Final tree" probably refer to the similarity of all living things ("just like me") and how humans decided to cultivate plant life because they thought it was beautiful ("You're lovely/But you're lonely/I will clone thee")." The "You're lovesly/But you're lonely/I will clone thee" thing kind of reminds me how in the biblical story, God created Eve from Adam's rib (I will clone thee) because Man needed Woman (You're lovely/but you're lonely). It also said something very similar in the beginning (But it's lonely/With a bone/He will try to clone me/Make a mother/There will be another me). I think the end is just kind of a reflection on the beginning there, has nothing to do with cultivation or whatever. Otherwise, fucking awesome song, fucking awesome band. |
Beck – The Horrible Fanfare/Landslide/Exoskeleton Lyrics | 17 years ago |
After about an hour of listening to bits and pieces of the song over and over and over again, these are the lyrics I came up with. Half of it may be completely wrong, but at least people can comment on it now. I LOVE this song. It's got that weird science-fiction, the-future-is-bleak sort of feel to it that I love. It's divided up into three parts-- The Horrible Fanfare (beginning)/ Landslide (middle)/ Exoskeleton (talking at the end). I have no idea what it means. But I'm surprised nobody posted the lyrics before now. Anyway. Good song. |
Tweaker – Happy Child Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oooh, I just had a thought: Maybe he killed her, and is all... freaky-outy about it, denial, hating himself for it, yknow. Yeah. |
Tweaker – Happy Child Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love this song. I love this song. I love this song. I love this song. Why the hell am I the only one who has said that? :( This song reminds me of a man just in denial (just read the chorus), about his wife or someone he loves who has died or is dying. I haven't delved very deeply in it, but this is a god-awesome song that you must listen to right now and then buy the album and then everyone can know the awesomeness that is Tweaker. Will Oldham (heheh... oldham) is my favorite of Tweaker's singers. |
Deerhoof – Panda Panda Panda Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I accidentally clicked on the link to the last comment for this song. I thought it looked interesting so i checked it out on itunes. And now I love this band and I own the CD with panda panda panda on it. Not to mention the band name is awesome. "What are you listening to?" "Deerhoof!" It's just so fun to say. Yeah, that's all. |
Beck – Missing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The way he sings it is so strange. Soft and... mixed up. I love this song. Definately one of my favorites. |
The Dresden Dolls – Slide Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Okay, anyone who says that this song isn't about a child being raped, please tell me what "but her smile is wide and her legs are spread wider" means. Legs are spread wider. Really. I think the idea that "orange man" can be related to a jail convict's bright orange jumpsuit is correct. Amanda was raped by her music teacher or something like that (From what I heard), as she says in her song "Missed Me", so he orange man could possibly be him. Or it could be her father, because apparently she hated him "Half Jack", which would also be why he had to tempt her with pennies. The "getting older" thing is also very plausible, with the slide and going down it being the metaphor to that as previously stated by everyone else here... I don't feel like elaborating anymore (it's already been elaborated on enough), but this is a damn excellent song, Amanda is a genious songwriter. |
Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Zoolander |
Harry Nilsson – Coconut Lyrics | 18 years ago |
When you take this song for a literal meaning (limes and coconuts) it just cracks me up. Of course it probably has nothing to do with limes and coconuts. But also if you /do/ put a lime in a coconut, because of the citrus in the lime the coconut milk would curdle, which would make her bellyache worse if she drank it. But yeah. I love this song. Coke sucks. |
Nine Inch Nails – March of the Pigs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't know if someone's already said this, since I didn't feel like reading 3 pages of all this, but this song always reminds me of riots. "I want a little bit I want a piece of it I think he's losing it I want to watch it come down don't like the look of it don't like the taste of it don't like the smell of it I want to watch it come down" The rioters, you know, rioting. This song has a lot of violence in it, and riots have a lot of violence in it. The rioters of course would be the pigs, and I suppose they could be rioting against society and such. "maybe afraid of it let's discredit it let's pick away at it I want to watch it come down " Rioters group up to riot because alone they "may be afraid of it" but together they can all "watch it come down". I don't know, just an idea. Awesome song though. |
Beck – Little One Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love this song. It's steadily climbing up my favorite list by Beck. I don't know why more people have commented... this is such an excellent song. It's so... I don't know. Melancholic? Just the way it sounds. I love it. |
Art Brut – Formed A Band Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Someone reccomended I get this as a free download on my sony MP3 player. I'm so glad i did. It's just so amusing. |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Pea Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song makes me giggle every time I hear it... :3 It's just so... interesting. Heehee. |
The Black Eyed Peas – Where Is The Love? (Feat. Justin Timberlake) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
About the only decent Black Eyed Peas song out. |
Mariah Carey – Shake It Off Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I hate her. She stole my name. Now every time I tell someone my name they're like "OMGMARIAHCAREH" and I'm like "shut up you idiot". She's just another giant-breasted lyposuction bimbo in the pop industry just used as a tool to make money. All of her songs are the same, just like every other pop hit today. |
Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think the video for this song makes the meaning painfully obvious. |
Tweaker – Ruby Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Best song ever... 'nuff said. Not enough people listen to Tweaker. But maybe that's a good thing. |
The Black Eyed Peas – My Humps Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Suckiest song ever. Stupidest lyrics ever. And I thought that "Golddigger" song was bad... this takes the cake. When she says "my lovely lady lumps" it sounds like she needs to go to a doctor... lumps.... gah. IDIOTS. David_Ipfan has it right on. |
Beck – Qué Onda Guero Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A) Guero does mean a guy with blonde hair, but it is also a spanish slang term meaning "pale skin". B) Beck isn't blonde anyway. I love this song. Fun, fun. |
Beck – Girl Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Well, when I listen to it I'm inclined to hear "sun-eyed", just because that's what it sounds like. And it makes sense, too, with the references to the sun and such. I never heard "cyanide" before because it always sounds to me like two syllables. But, listening closer, I can hear how he could be saying "cyanide", rushing the "cy" and the "an" and then adding the "ide" at the end. I also see how that could make sense, cyanide being a type of poisonous chemical that he could be killing her with. Either way, it's an awesome song. I love the video. |
