The Hoosiers – Goodbye Mr A Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe this song could be an indictment of Randian Objectivist philosophy. "Mr. A" was a 1960s superhero created by Steve Ditko (the man who invented Spider-Man, Blue Beetle, the Question and others) who practiced strong conservative teachings (Objectivism as defined by Ayn Rand) which Ditko personally believed. The superhero aspect of the music video as well as almost all of the lyrics (for instance "There’s a hole in your logic, / You who know all the answers") seem to indicate that the video is a savage (and justified!) criticism.

Incubus – Out From Under Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, some bits are somewhat 1984/newspeak, but I have to think it has something to do with socialisation/Marxist/sexually liberal themes

Murray Gold – Song For Ten Lyrics 17 years ago
This was written for the 2005 Doctor Who Christmas special to introduce David Tennant as the 10th Doctor. One of the lines quotes Christopher Eccleston's last episode:

"So have a good life
Do it for me
Make me so proud
Like you want me to be"

And also foreshadows the finale where the Doctor and Rose are separated, at the same spot but in other dimensions, and how the Doctor called out to Rose in her dreams to make a final (albeit interrupted) goodbye:

"Well I woke up today and you're on the other side
Our time will never come again
But if you can still dream
Close your eyes it will seem
That you can see me now and then"

The Police – Message In A Bottle Lyrics 17 years ago
Fantastic song, the Incubus/No Doubt duet/cover of this is also amazing!

Incubus – Rogues Lyrics 17 years ago
I wonder if this is Incubus' commentary on the evolution/creationism debate, saying hats off to Rogues like Darwin.

Incubus – Look Alive Lyrics 17 years ago
Such a nice friendly meaning... about perspective across life, which we are only able to perceive through timeless artifacts. I also think there's an ironic meaning to it, like a sort of criticism of our *lack* of perspective and falsity.

Incubus – Punch Drunk Lyrics 17 years ago
Shockingly awesome song, can't believe this was left of the UK/US versions! A lot more depth than the rest of Light Grenades, which as a whole lacks the lyrical beauty of Make Yourself and even A Crow.

Incubus – Message in a Bottle (with No Doubt) (Police cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I way prefer this version to the Police version.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 17 years ago
I have no idea why this song has such a strong resonance with me. It's truly amazing... I don't know if it's because of its simplicity or imagery or because it relates to a place I find my mind leading to often, but it's really beautiful.

Yeah it was just what it said when I ripped my ex-gf's CD... someone copied it wrong to the Windows Media database or something.

Incubus – Anna Molly Lyrics 17 years ago
The video's meaning is slightly different.

I think the video tries to explain that one's soulmate cannot die until they've found you, or it could be symbolic of Brandon's quest for true love and even when he seems he's dead... he's not, he'll come back. It could also be symbolic of a band that feels they're dying, but making a miraculous survival with a successful sixth album :P.

Jack's Mannequin – Last Straw Lyrics 17 years ago
Brilliant line, "Why the country needs a god", is exactly what I thought this morning when a woman on TV said there is a "god-shaped hole in society. I hate religion.

The Killers – Where the White Boys Dance Lyrics 17 years ago
Err Brandon's never said he's straight, only that he's not gay.

And no, it can't be about heterosexual cheating because the line is "Her suspicions, well they’re rising high. And the MAN who sweeps HIM off she doesn’t meet,"

submissions
The Killers – All the Pretty Faces Lyrics 17 years ago
Underpressure85, that's almost exactly what I was saying. Quite a lot of Killers songs have an underlying gay theme, a little better written than but also less obvious than those by The Smiths.

The Killers – Bones Lyrics 17 years ago
Another weird thing. Who the hell is Clyde?

The Killers – Where the White Boys Dance Lyrics 17 years ago
Heh, Brandon Flowers is not straight. I have to conclude he's bi from the songs, but that's just songs really. The fact that he can be rather camp is the other factor. ANYWAY. This is possibly the least catchy song on the album, but knowing it exists is a good thing, because Hot Fuss's gay songs were Andy, You're a Star and Somebody Told Me, and I was beginning to think this album didn't have one and Brandon had sold out.

The Killers – The Ballad of Michael Valentine Lyrics 17 years ago
Further notes, Michael Valentine is also the name of the main character in Stranger in a Strange Land (which is all about "grokking", translates roughly to uniting, meeting, merging - which in the context of two people would describe complete unity, love).

The two celebrities he compares himself to Marlon Brando and Greta Garbo (and like in Under the Gun he mentions James Dean) are all famous for their bisexuality.

submissions
The Smiths – Is It Really So Strange? Lyrics 17 years ago
Like most Smiths songs, it's about a gay guy that is in love with his straight friend.

Incubus – Love Hurts Lyrics 17 years ago
This is beautiful. I would elaborate on the meaning but... it means simply that Love Hurts. That is does horrible things to you and puts you in horrible places.

Incubus – Anna Molly Lyrics 17 years ago
The "wounded satellite" lyric is briliant, very clever. It also sums up the entire song. He's broken and yet his whole existence still revolves around this girl he's not with / hasn't met / doesn't exist.

The Killers – Why Do I Keep Counting? Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about being aware of your own morality, to a frightening extent. Anyway, I also read its meainng in an interview just the other day. Brandon has a terrible fear of flying, and was also told he would die on his birthday or something (I'm serious) so I can imagine this is him writing about ihs desire to survive, to have the plane land sucessfully.

The Killers – Bones Lyrics 17 years ago
Wait a minute, the sexual interpretation, with "bones" referring to "boning"... wouldn't bones-on-bones and "com[ing] with me" imply more gayness.

God Brandon, you and your imaginary wife aren't fooling anyone :P.

The Killers – Bones Lyrics 17 years ago
Sexy, sexy, horny song. The opening is trying to add some sort of depth, darkness, that it need to be complete. I wonder if it was written to suit the video concept... maybe once I see the video I'll have a different opinion. Tim Burton better not disappoint. I love it though. :)

The Killers – All the Pretty Faces Lyrics 17 years ago
Also, the other meaning to me resembles "Pretty Girls Make Graves".

submissions
The Killers – Sam's Town Lyrics 17 years ago
The Killers lyrics have changed from introspective ones everyone can associate with (as Brandon put it "make their own") to something which is harder to interpret, possibly because now it doesn't actually mean anything.

Musically it's brilliant, just the meanings in this song strikes me as more straightforward than we're used to.

submissions
The Killers – When You Were Young Lyrics 17 years ago
All these Killers songs focus on 'beautiful boys', with lots of emphasis on "he"s and "him"s. I know he's married, but it's really hard to imagine Brandon Flowers is straight. He has such a fantastic voice.

The Doors – People Are Strange Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the Echo & The Bunnymen cover of this. I did think it was weirdly placed at the end of the unaired Charmed pilot. Didn't seem like a sentiment that fit Shannen Doherty's characterisation of Prue, perhaps fit closer to Holly's Piper.

Nine Inch Nails – Into the Void Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe no one's had the interpretation that this could have been written a year in advance for the movie, or that perhaps the movie was based on the lyrics.

"Pictures in my head of the final destination (vision of death)
All lined up (specific order in death's design)
All the one's that aren't allowed to stay (those that died in the beginning)
Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away (The protagonist always dies anyway, no matter how hard they fight)

Christian Kane – LA Song Lyrics 18 years ago
"She's pretty as a picture
She is like a golden ring
Circles me with love and laughter
I can't feel a thing"

That describes Angel's relationship with Cordy, he can't be loved or he'll turn evil.

"The sky's gonna open
People gonna pray and crawl
It's gonna rain down fire
It's gonna burn us all"

The Annual Apocalypse, specifically when the Beast blocked out the sun. Or, when the "sky opened" and Jasmine descended, and everyone was "burned" as a result. Or possibly the final episode, when the sky really did open and thousands of demons descended.

Incubus – Redefine Lyrics 18 years ago
I swear, it keeps sounding to me like Brandon's singing about sexuality in a lot of his song... clearly not all. This is about him feeling he doesn't fit in categories, and he doesn't want to.

Incubus – Glass Lyrics 18 years ago
"you'll see we exist as well"

Bisexuals. Gay men who used to think they were bisexual say bisexuals don't exist. A lot of women can't get over that they date men, and so, must be completely gay.

It's aimed at someone he's in love with.

The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics 18 years ago
"I'm not the man you think I am / I'm not the man you think I am" They think he's not gay.

"And Sorrow's native son / He will not smile for anyone" No one turns him on.

"And Sorrow's native son / He will not rise for anyone" No one gets him hard, to translate crudely.

"And Pretty Girls Make Graves / Oh really ? / Oh ... " Literally, pretty girls make him want to kill himself because he doesn't fancy them.

"But she's too rough / And I'm too delicate" Means he doesn't want sex, or possibly that he's a bit queer, as delicate has effeminate connotations.

"I lost my faith in Womanhood" he's concluded he's not bi, he might be gay or asexual, but he realises that women just don't turn him on.

Pansy Division – Homosapien Lyrics 18 years ago
"Don't wanna classify you like an animal in the zoo / But it seems good to me to know that you're Homosapien too" basically meaning, it doesn't matter if you're male or female - if we're both human, we're literally made for each other.

I came here to post my controversial theory that it was about lesbians but it seems there's 7 pages of it already. It just sounds like it was written by a woman. "Bobby don't consider it cheating" makes me think of a mate of mine whose girlfriend didn't consider him doing stuff with guys as real 'cheating'. Heh, yeah, lesbianism.

Incubus – Damnation? Lyrics 18 years ago
Brandon Boyd is a very intelligent, but spiritual man. I believe this song is his own consideration of his sexuality, and what it means for him, considering he's the spiritual type.

"Follow me down. Swallow it down." The first line indicates a "sinful path" to hell, as Christians would depict. The second has sexual connotations.

"I used to think about it then I... / Chose the word indulgence, now I..." Means he used to struggle, and saw it only as his own gratification. Even if Brandon, like myself, doesn't adhere to homophobic considerations, he could well consider them as part of a balanced argument.

"Why I live this way? Who knows. Why I live this way? He knows." Why do I feel these things? Why can't anyone figure it out? God is the only one who really knows, which leads to his struggle with the concept of damnation.

"Is this damnation? Or a beginning? I'll take "B"." He's decided it's not damnation. Or would like to hope so. B could stand for bisexual, which Brandon is alleged to be, some lyrics would suggest, and he described himself as on the Morning View Sessions DVD.

"And visualize the blood as the life.
Is to bend the wheel of my own kind.
I wish you'd see the hope in my eye.
All in all sublime on this side.
Then again you'd have to leave this life... ....behind."

He contemplates damnation while he tries to understand humankind. He wants to express he really doesn't want to be damned, he is not wicked. He wants to be himself. He knows to understand, he would have to die.
