Senses Fail – Irony of Dying on Your Birthday Lyrics 8 years ago
@[PyroBillie:5680] I wrote this comment when I was 15 years old, haha. But yeh, compared to trying to become a famous rock star like Jim Morrison, it's definitely a lot easier to become a famous serial killer. There's a lot less competition, you just have to completely lose any respect for human life. Mass murder is even easier, because you only have to plan for that brief encounter, rather than continually avoiding capture.

Nathaniel Rateliff – I Am Lyrics 12 years ago
The following interpretation is quite an audacious guess at the meaning of the song, so I will try to justify every point I make as well as I can.

Jist: I think the song is about accepting himself as a homosexual. (The hidden ending to the phrase "I Am...")

First verse: About him and a lover developing a relationship ("We built fires) that he sees as being passionate enough to burn entire woods (fire as a metaphor for passion is very common). "Remember the sparks that caught the wind and torched the field" is a reflection on the first interactions that led to the passion. None of this indicates a homosexual passion until the line "We stomped at the grass [...] to no avail", suggesting that they tried to suppress their desires and failed, which suggests a forbidden attraction such as homosexuality. "I'll get burned" is a lament on the perceived consequences of him accepting himself as gay.

Although I transcribed the repeated next line as "And hey, it's a crazy life" I feel it could also be "And hey, it's a crazy lie" meaning that rejecting his desires is leaving him feeling dishonest to himself.

Second verse: The first line refers to his "mark" or "stain" that won't "wash out", this fits my interpretation in that he is uncomfortable with his sexuality and see's it as a "stain" that he wishes he could remove. The next line refers to how deeply hidden it is "you'll never know [...] unless you dig around". The next two lines show a slightly more optimistic side to things: "When we get back" refers to a distant future full of possibility, "we can clean it up and show it off" meaning that this "mark" or "stain" that he can't "wash out" could actually become something he's proud of, which fits strongly into my interpretation since many people struggling with their sexuality initially see it as something "dirty" like a "stain" but with time and after 'coming out' can come to be proud of it, this is his hope for the future. The "bones" he's "chipped from falling down" refer to the past hurts from failures, suggesting that he's not convinced that accepting himself will be a 'success' and achieve what he wants, but it's worth a try since it wouldn't be the first time he's been hurt from failing.

Lastly, the refrain "I AM" at the end is one of the biggest suggestions for my theory, since it is given no explicit explanation elsewhere for what 'he is', this vagueness suggests either it's just a meaningless, pretty thing to sing, or that it's a meaning he'd rather conceal. The fact that he named the song after it suggests that it does have meaning and hence I think the vagueness is to conceal what "I AM" refers to, that being "I am ___" with "___" being gay, homosexual, queeer, etc.

I loved this song for a very long time before I came upon this interpretation of it and now the more I re-listen to it, the more I feel it fits. A beautiful song with a beautiful, emotional, personal meaning to it (if I'm correct). I adore it either way, of course.

Laura Marling – Ghosts Lyrics 12 years ago
As many have noted, I think the verses are singing about the man and the quotes are all him, whereas the chorus is the girl's response.

Here's where I differ from other interpretations: she is saying "It's not like I believe in everlasting love" as a 'don't worry', saying that I understand that I'm not your first love and I'm fine with that, your past is your past and we all have one, love doesn't need to be 'everlasting' as in not only without anyone after but also without anyone before.

He's come along feeling very nervous about bringing up the subject of past loves, but she's very casual and mature about it, realising that you can't expect to be the only love your partner has ever had.

Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way Lyrics 12 years ago
My interpretation may be influenced by the song's association with "Matilda", but I feel that the song is about wishing that you could talk to your past self and help 'you' through some of your tough times and 'send you on your way', particularly yourself as a child.

I see this due to lines like: "I would like to reach out my hand" and "I would like to hold my little hand", the hand doing the holding is normal sized, but the hand being held is 'little', both the holder and the one being held are the same person, hence I think it's the singer at to different points in his life, as a child and now.

He's saying whatever tough times we go through in life, things will always get brighter and if only our future selves could go back and tell us that when we feel sad, it would be so much easier to 'get on our way'. :)

Passenger – Community Centre Lyrics 12 years ago
Fairly clear meaning, but a beautiful, eloquent expression of the idea.

He's at an alcoholics anonymous (or similar) meeting at his local community centre, describing how he's slowly coming to terms with the concept that he has an alcohol problem and reminiscing on how it all started.

He never fully accepts this idea in the song, as seen in the last line, but comes very close at times to taking that first, 'hardest step' of admitting he has a problem as seen in the line "I could tell them that I just came for the free cup of tea and the biscuit, and make my way toward the door but I don't think I can risk it" as in he can't risk not doing something about his drinking, and he goes on to reflect how he "never wanted to stay", presumably referring to staying til the early morning at the local pub.

Leatherface – Not A Day Goes By Lyrics 12 years ago
A time when everything was evergreen evergreen and seemingly ideal
Nights turning into the days and we didn't notice the change
No I didn't think you were wrong and I can still sing your favourite song
It's not as simple as forgetting presents that were bought
And not a day goes by when I don't spare you a thought
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
At a time when everything was evergreen and seemingly ideal
And though the nights turning into the days and we didn't notice the change
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a damn day
No I didn't think you were wrong and I can still sing your favorite song
It's not as simple as forgetting presents were bought
And not a day goes by I don't spare you a thought
Not a day not a day goes by not a day not a day

Rent – I'll Cover You Lyrics 12 years ago
I think there are some sly homoerotic undertones to this song, specifically I think this song is subtextually a discussion about who should be the 'top' and 'bottom' in the new relationship:
"Live in my house, I'll be your shelter" - Angel
"Open your door, I'll be your tenant" - TC
"Just slip me on, I'll be your blanket [...] I'll be your coat" - Angel
"You'll be my king and I'll be your castle" - Angel
"No, you'll be my queen and I'll be your moat" - TC
and lastly, "I'll cover you" by both.

I think it's most obvious in the King+castle and Queen+moat references.

James Blake – I Never Learnt to Share Lyrics 12 years ago
It's an in-joke, he's an only child. The joke is that his "brother and [his] sister" can't "speak to [him]" because they don't exist, so obviously he can't blame them.

But then the title reveals the depth of the song, in that he always resented being an only child because he never learnt the basic social skills that other kids developed through interaction with their siblings, like how "to share" toys and the like.

Frank Turner – Hold Your Tongue Lyrics 13 years ago
"Been pretty since the day you were born
Sow the roots of your beautiful hair"
- She's spent her whole life with the notion that being pretty defines her and she 'sowed the roots' of this notion in that she invested all her efforts into bettering herself physically.

"Drew all the water that your body could hold
So when your soul needed water
No water was there"
- Continues the plant metaphor and notes that her focus on her external features meant that the internal features (her soul) were neglected.

"You shed words like so much dead skin
They gather up like dust against walls
They kick up when someone comes in
So if they're looking for something they find nothing at all"
- She doesn't see the value of meaningful/intellectual conversation because she grew up with such shallow ideals. So while people all adore her at first, if anyone actually 'comes in' (ie get inside her mind/soul) they find nothing, she has nothing unique or interesting about her, internally.

"So hold your goddamn tongue
You forget yourself
How could I be the one?
If you're wrapped round someone else?"
- Brings new meaning to the 'shed words' and 'when someone comes in' from the last part, as we find that she's actually been caught in bed wrapped around someone else, and is 'shedding words' of explanation. Frank (or the persona) is saying 'Hold your goddamn tongue', as in 'how dare you even try to justify yourself.. or tell me I'm the one!'.
[Open to interpretation, 'wrapped round' could just mean an infatuation]

"And I really don't know which feels worse
To be a fool or be with a liar"
- He's questioning whether he would've preferred to have found out that she was cheating or not. Finding out makes him feel like 'a fool', but if he'd not found out then he'd be happy, but with 'a liar'.

"I just know that her heart once soaked and cursed
Is that much harder to set on fire"
- Here he's not talking about her, but him. He's saying that even though finding out might have been for the best, he's now been so damaged by the revelation that he's not sure if he'll ever trust another girl enough to fall in love again (have his heart 'set on fire').

"But I won't let this die
Til I have seen you cry
A single tear to show
There's water in your soul"
- Even after all they've been through and with all the pain she's now caused him, he's never seen her show any depth, never seen her show true emotion, not 'a single tear', which reflects that she's still just completely shallow and superficial. He finishes by returning to the plant metaphor and implying that a tear would show that her soul has had at least *some* growth through her life, that it even exists.

Cory Branan – Miss Ferguson Lyrics 13 years ago
Love this song. Love the opening line:
"In a town where you can sum up every girl with just one sentence - give or take the subject or the verb."
The generic sentence structure is "Subject Verb Object", so if you give/take the subject or the verb, you can be left with just an "Object" - i.e. he's saying that Californian (probably L.A. specifically) girls are mostly just objects.

I love the "tether-ball" imagery he uses to describe his tongue-tiedness as well as the "needle and spoon" simile to describe her purpose and manner as she comes to seduce him, comparing it to a drug user shooting up (Heroin, specifically).

I love this song, so much. It's adorable. A love song from the point of view of a little boy.

He has trouble talking to the girl he likes ("skate [read: foot] in my mouth") but on this day, he gets his courage up and tells her he likes her, in his own childish way. :)

Yeh, I think so. Sixteen is all about how Ben's grandparents met, cos he mentions in "Mom" that "your mother was 16 when she married the man that she loved, and she gave you everything she had and you gave it to us".

I think this might be about Ben's grandfather meeting his future wife, maybe 8 years before he went to or came back from "The War", hence the line "beat the odds one night at 22".

The Jezabels – Hurt Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm fairly sure that it's about the singer's relationship with a family member who has at some stage abandoned her.

Abandonment is suggested by line like "It used to be that when you said you were leaving, I'd want to follow you", "praying [...] for you to come around", "waiting for you, on the table" and "so I stay waiting".

It's suggested that it's a family member by lines like "the dinner table", and the fact that she is "remember[ing] praying at the dinner table" backs this up since it suggests childhood.

The desire for this family member to "maybe pat [her] on the back" also reflects a childish desire for acknowledgment, like children often crave from older siblings or parents.

The references to "Abel" suggest to me that the family member is a brother. Hence, I think the song is about an older brother who abandoned her at some stage, that she's always looked up to and wanted approval from.

Her idolisation of him is indicated by the lines "'cause to you, the moon is but a pearl" and "whole cities light up, but nothing can compare to you". The pearl being "stolen from your mother's bedside" alludes to the brother being untrustworthy, and perhaps a poor idol, which is why the singer expects 'Abel' to "hurt [her]", which I think means to 'let her down' and disappoint her.

He never lives up to the image she's created of him: "Do you see him like I do?" which is that of a sort of 'hero', when in truth he's "a vulture".

When you make that face:

It's

perfect.

Hold me so tight that my ribs break
and then I'd die in your arms.
I've felt this way before
and I've said all of these words...

Hold me to your chest
'cause I need your heartbeat.
I cant look into your eyes.
...I don't deserve to anyway.
and I know honesty..
..honesty is your weakness
and you know affection..
..that affection is mine.
Neither of us have healed from past hurts, so...
I can see it on your face
And you can hear it in my voice.
All i have this broken heart to offer you
So, take it. It's yours.
It's been broken beyond more breaking
So, I could really use someone to rebuild.

I could really use someone to rebuild.

So, I could really use someone to rebuild.

I swear this song should be called "Call It Thrashing" and I swear that's what they sing at the end.
I thought it was about the way hc/punk music was going back then and has gone over the years, leading more and more away from it's punk roots and into this thrash/crossover/metalcore etc sound, which can sound "all the same" and they "call it thrashing" to cover up their lack of originality.

Great song. Perfect balance of light/shade and rise/fall.

It's about how free we all were as children.
The days when "saving the world could be done in a day with a cape and an imagination - ready to play".

It's a lament for those days of freedom and hope, that seem so forgotten in the adult world: "we'd forget it all by being caught up in a race that isn't for fun at all".

Chuck closes by pleading to see things the way a child does - brilliant.

Maybe it's about Tony Victory?

I only think this because of the fact that Anthony chose to mention the name in the song. If it were just a friend of his who no-one would know, it wouldn't make sense to use their name, since it'd just be outing them and their problems for no reason. Whereas if it's a well-known Tony, then people can connect to the song if they know him.

New Found Glory – Radio Adelaide Lyrics 14 years ago
(NB: I'm biased as I happen to think this song relates to me a lot)

I think the song is about a guy who feels like his girlfriend should show interest in him, rather than him having to be the sole-instigator of conversations about him and his life. He feels like she should ask him about his interests and life. I think he feels really pathetic when he brings up things that mean a lot to him, because he's convinced she doesn't want to hear about it, because of one thing she once said to him that stuck in his head.

Evidence:
"You'll never get an answer from me
i always keep it stuck in my head
a million words i could have said"

"Please disregard* my opinion
i try to only give it when i'm asked
it helps to get it off my chest"

"the point has been right in front of you, in plain view
the past does not only repeat,
it haunts you and I can't get the words you said out of my head
out of my head"

He hates the fact that even after all the time they've spent together, the truth is she barely knows anything about him, because she never asks...
Evidence:
"don't you say, you know i heard you said you know
don't you say, you know anything about me"

He is the one who actually listens to her and knows about her, while she basically ignores him, yet she still complains about how hard he is to be with (possibly for him not showing emotions etc).
Evidence:
"you say you're so overwhelmed with grief
and it's because of me"

I think "Don't forget to let your life rot you inside-out" means don't forget to keep your problems on the inside. i.e. keep up a positive facade whether you feel positive or depressed inside. It's intentionally bad advice, much like the chorus. The real message is the opposite - don't bottle your emotions within yourself and cause your life to rot from the inside out.

Carry On – A Life Less Plagued Lyrics 14 years ago
When will I rise from this toss turn sleep?
With nothing holding me down to this bed.
Bring the dirt and make it my grave
Won't you do it please?
Everything is shit. I owe, I lag, I try, I fail, I hate
The pseudo love the world brings on pretty wings
(It sunk my dreams at sixteen)
I can't laugh, love, breath, feel, fuck
Without knowing my life is sinking fast
and I don't swim I dream
Under a sky that I can see crashing down
While I wish on a star that lies
I'm transfixed on a better time
Drawing out the end
I'm crying for a life less plagued.
Pure and defined, why can't you give it to me?
I want to hold your head close to mine
and whisper words so far from true
"...everything will be fine"
(Mixing your tears with mine)
We can shake it off kid, "I'll try harder
and I’ll make sure we still see Europe
by the summer time."
Damn, you look so sad when I lie.
Take my hand, we'll walk this romance
Until its bitter end
Humming songs in the key of faith in me
Just fucking leave me, because the word on the street
Is that I’m fucked, I’m out of my fucking mind
It's just a matter of time
Just give me a fucking sign
and I’ll make it out of here alive.
I'll keep feeding ink to paper
and I still won't find a fucking answer.
I'll keep feeding ink to paper
and I still won't find a fucking...
I'm asking, I’m trying, I’m needing...
and I still won’t find a fucking thing
I'm asking, I’m trying, I’m needing...
and I still won’t find a fucking thing.
We must be speaking a different language
"Hey, who's team are you sleeping for?"
Somewhere in hell there's a person like me
With stitch-filled skin and chipped fucking teeth
Here's to eyes that are brighter than mine
and here's to regrets and wasted time.
"I need a flashlight..." because I’m obviously blind
Now, one more time...
Kiss me good-bye, I’m signing off.
A life less plagued.

Not "Was 1984. Not sure."

Also, the line "She's a genus and a Venus" doesn't make sense as written. How can one be a "genus", yet all lyric sites seem to show it like that. When I heard it, I thought it was:
"She's a genus à la Venus" which makes a lot more sense. He's saying she's the same type of girl as Venus/Aphrodite, one of the most beautiful women in Greek Mythology.

I see this song as being about a guy with a younger girlfriend and she's just coming to experience the world for herself, learning things, making mistakes, living her own life. He wants to be there and watch her experience it all, but he doesn't feel the need to understand it all. He's happy for her to know all about the world even if he doesn't, he just wants to see her experiencing life her way.
He's happy for her to live out her aspirations and ambitions, while he ignores his own. He doesn't want to live out his dreams, he wants to see someone else do it: "I want to see movies of my dreams". He wants to see what it's like to live out your dreams, but not actively pursue them himself.

Yeh, "4th quarter pipe dreams" is my favourite line.

It's like a triple pun. It breaks down into "4th quarter", "quarter pipe" and "pipe dreams".
I guess I see it as "4th quarter" means last minute, as in it's very late in life for her to have these "pipe dreams", which are improbable aspirations, and I just see "quarter pipe" as a great way to link them, seeing as a quarter-pipe is another phrase. It could also be linked in the sense that quarter-pipe's represent radicalism in a sense as well as fun, which is part of her dreams, maybe.

I disagree.
I think it's about a relationship that gets split up because the girl is changing state. She decides to end it because she doesn't think their relationship could continue long-distance, and suggests that they'd both end up finding other people. But he feels she's the only one he needs and that as proof she could even "tie up [his] hands".
I get that idea from the line "please don't believe me when I say I don't miss you". I reckon that he feels like he has no choice but to accept it and even claims not to miss her, so that she doesn't feel bad, but he's really miserable over her.

For so long, so fucking long
The time has come for us to break

Listen to what I say because you have so much

My trust, no love because you let down.

LET DOWN!

Chain of Strength – True Til Death Lyrics 17 years ago
I reckon the song is about Ian MacKaye.

"You said it shouldn't be taken too seriously"
This is heaps similar to some of the stuff MacKaye has been quoted as saying about SxE, about how it was never meant to be a movement or anything and how it was just him singing about how he felt.

Ian Mackaye is no longer edge, he says that it was right for him as a youth but not as an adult. This explains the anger in the song.

Also at one of Chain's concerts the singer introduced this song by saying something like:
"There have been a lot of people who are straight-edge, but then as they grow older it means less and less to them. This song is called "True Til Death" something they were not!"

This fits in with the MacKaye theory.

Have Heart – Something More Than Ink Lyrics 17 years ago
This is basically the best song I've ever heard.

HavexHeart have changed me.

Sean Murphy YOU have "Set a raging fire in the heart of a kid".

It's about the guy who introduced Murphy to SxE. His words and the message he sent Sean "Held in [his] heart as they burned inside [his] head".

Then the mentor later broke edge. "Even if, you chose a different path to tread". But it doesn't change anything, he's not going to denounce SxE because the guy who introduced him to it happened to. Even if he broke edge his words still have meaning, to Murphy SxE is about something more than ink. It's his life. "A hero's fall will never change what I think! 'coz at the core of my heart this is something more than ink."

I love this song, and I love the fact that Have Heart decided not to take some elitist edge position on the subject of breaking edge. He accepts that it was his choice to discontinue the edge lifestyle and Murphy makes his own choice to stay true and keep his words alive.

I'm probably way off (considering Murphy is from Boston and MacKaye from DC) but I kinda guessed it may be about Minor Threat frontman Ian MacKaye. Just based on the fact he started Edge, so it's his "words" that all edge propenents are "keeping alive" and the fact that he broke edge.

Anyone know the truth?

Missy Higgins – Scar Lyrics 17 years ago
I can see what ppl are saying about the record exec. angle but it doesn't make sense chronologically. "Scar" was the song that Unearthed her. It was written before she was successful and all the record companies wanted to sign her coz it was the song that made her famous... so like, how could it be about execs...

I think it has far too much of a romantic tone to be about something like record companies and the music industry...

Xbishopx – Wreck Lyrics 17 years ago
Fuck Yes!

xBishopx are one of the best fucking SxE bands I know of, plus they are out there with a fucking message unlike some Straight-edge bands who just write about the fact that they are straight-edge and nothing else.

xBishopx always have something to say and they never over-do the whole "We are Edge" thing.

This song is about cigarettes and how fucking stupid you are if you smoke them and the fuckers who have no respect for those around them as they smoke.

I can relate to this song really well, because I fucking hate smokers!

Casey Jones – Know This X Lyrics 17 years ago
I was just lisetening to this song today and I heard for the first time the lyric "Straight-edge for a while, a crooked-edge for that crooked smile" and it really hit me.

I decided a couple of weeks back to try out straight-edge to see if it was right for me. I despise smoking, pills and pot and I have never been a "heavy" drinker. So I decided to give up alcohol for a month and see how it went. The month is almost over and I'm still not sure, the thing is I've been really depressed at parties I go to now that I'm not drinking, not to say that alcohol stops depression, but it's as though I don't notice the things that depress me.

So I'm not sure if I'm gonna actually go straight-edge for life, but then I heard that line and I feel like such a fraud...

I think I'll keep the whole no alcohol thing going for even longer just to see if it gets better in the long run, because besides alcohol everything about SxE suits me perfectly.

This song has affected me hugely.

The lyrics are self-explanatory, but the meaning I received is profound.

Carpathian – Who The Fuck Taught You Snaps? Lyrics 18 years ago
This is such a poor effort at transcribing.

These are the full lyrics:

How could something that means so much to me,
Mean so little to you?
I can’t believe you could walk away,
Leave this so easily.
Blinded by the stars,
In your fucking eyes!

I’ll tear them out and replace with something real!
Teach you to feel,
How I fucking feel!
I’ll tear them out and replace with something real!

So tell me how does it feel,
To fuck yourself up?
So tell me how does it feel,
To fuck yourself up?
So tell me…

How could something that means so much to me,
Mean so little to you?
I can’t believe you could walk away,
Leave this so easily.
Blinded by the stars.

So follow,
Please follow me.
Through this just take my hand.
So follow,
Please follow me.
Through this just take my hand.
So follow please follow me,
Through this just take my hand,
Set yourself free!

Set yourself free!

From First to Last – Waltz Moore Lyrics 18 years ago
This song isn't about the rest of the world or about the emo scene.

IT'S ABOUT SONNY!!!

He wouldn't fake something this emotional and deep, he'd be called a fake and lose all credibility from fans.

The bulimia remark I'm not sure about... but he could easily be bulimic, guys CAN be bulimic too.

But I can definitely see what he's talking about for the rest of it.

"I refuse to leave the world without smearing on makeup,
With my hair blinding my eyes."

Just take a look at Sonny! He always has a thick layer of red eyeshadow on or some black eyeliner, and probably some more subtle detail across the rest of his face at times.

Although lots of people think he is the sexiest man ever and all that, you have to admit it isn't for his looks, he has SEX APPEAL, but if he wasn't such an amazing singer/screamer and lyricist then he wouldn't be found so sexy.

He probably had to deal with this a lot in high school and stuff, so he has probably always felt ugly and/or fat.

So a lot of this could be an expression of past insecurity and self-hatred, I'm sure he's more confident now and perhaps he WAS bulimic as a teenager.

"I stretch myself across the world
Pushing my limits for your entertainment
And you had the nerve
To call out my weaknesses
And drag me through the dirt"

This is all about the kids who he slaves for, he sings until his lungs are fucked and screams til his throat is fucked and then he gets called ugly (probably on the net... or in magazines) "You had the nerve to call out my weakness (His low self-image) and drag me through the dirt"(and make him feel like nothing).

...as for the chorus, he "can't remember" the last time he has been "himself". I think this is a metaphor to say that he's lost his identity in a way, he's covered himself up from self-hatred brought on by intense criticism and ever since he's felt like a fake.

Panic! at the Disco – London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok I'm gonna break down the song into the important lines and assess what Ryan was saying IMO.

"Stop stalling, make a name for yourself"
This is him talking to himself, telling himself to stop procrastinating and acheive his dreams of fame.

"If you talk, you better walk
You better back your shit up"
Basically he's saying that what he writes he actually means and that he can't just write any old thing that sounds good, or other artists write.

"Start talking "a sensationalist"
Oh, he's slightly clever to just a certain extent"
He then switches to the perspective of the press and quotes them. At this stage of his rise to fame he is being praised as "A sensationalist" but people are starting to become very analytical of his lyrics "slightly clever to just a certain extent"

"Well we're just a wet dream for the webzines"
He's worried that their fame will be only fleeting and that they are just the latest "it band" for the webzines meaning that they just have the style and image that is "hip" right now and that soon they'll be forgotten.

"Just for the record The weather today is slightly sarcastic with a good chance of
A. Indifference and
B. Disinterest in what the critics say"
This is in my opinion NOT THE WAY HE CONSIDERS HIS MUSIC TO BE!!!

but "the weather" is a metaphor for "the scene" and what is "cool" at the moment, this being bands that are slightly sarcastic and "don't care what critics say".

Panic! at the Disco – But It's Better If You Do Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok just reading the first page of interpretations I have to say that too many of you are focused on trying to link this song with "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" just because they link musically.

I think this song links with "Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off" far more and also they two songs connect throught their titles with "But it's better if you do" completing the "Closer" quote.

Now onto the meaning:

Following from "Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off", the boy's ex-girlfriend has cheated on him and he has been gloating that she can never have him back and trying to cause her pain by reminding her that she will never find a guy as good as him.

Now in this song, he firstly presents a possible scenario in which he tries to get over his girlfriend in a strip-club, but HE NEVER ACTUALLY WENT TO THE STRIP-CLUB!!! He was simply toying with the idea because he knows that's what she'd expect, she thinks that he would be all depressed and revert to paying for women becuase he is HEARTBROKEN, but HE IS NOT!

He wants the girl to know that she didn't hurt him, that she wasn't worth it and that he didn't need to go to the strip-joint. When in truth he WOULDN'T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN THIS PLACE!!!

Missy Higgins – The sound of white Lyrics 18 years ago
When I saw that there were only 9 comments on this song I was devastated because I thought that they would just be pointless comments about nothing, but these have been useful.

I think it is about someone that has passed away, but one line has proven hard to interpret for me:

"My silence solidifies,
until that hollow void erases you,
erases you so I can't feel at all.
But if I never feel again, at least that nothingness
will end the painful dream, of you and me..."

It's always been my favourite line, but if this song is about a person who passed away and not a relationship which has ended (which was my initial interpretation) then what is it about?

The best idea I have is that the girl hasn't spoken enough about it (My silence solidifies) and she hasn't received proper closure. So instead of moving on after the death she has simply tried to block it out of her memory (Until that hollow void erases you). She is only numbing her self from feelings of pain associated with the death (So I can't feel at all), she is willing to numb herself as long as she doesn't have to feel the pain of loss (At least that nothingness will end the painful dream of you and me)

What do you think?
