Holly McNarland – Porno Mouth Lyrics 18 years ago
I recall hearing Holly say this song was about porn star Ron Jeremy (fat, greasy dude with the mustache)... watching him in a movie and thinking that he embodied everything is was to be a male porn star, even though "he's everything but beautiful."

Holly McNarland – Beautiful Blue Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a beautiful song. I recall when it was released hearing Holly on the radio (and this was a few years ago so my memory isn't perfect)... and she said that this song was written after September 11, 2001 and the theme is living in the aftermath of that. I think she said the chorus was based on seeing so many terrible and ugly images on the news, but then being able to wake up to her new baby everyday and seeing the beautiful side of life. Sort of juxtaposing emotions - i.e. sad/happy, ugly/beautiful, etc.

Garbage – Metal Heart Lyrics 18 years ago
Saw Garbage play recently and Shirley introduced this song as a protest song about the war in Iraq and George W. (she also mentioned her disapointed with the United Kingdom adminstration for supporting the war).
The song is neat because it isn't heavy handed about what it is saying... it is basically just telling people to think for themselves and start questioning things you hear (i.e. the world is round?). If your government can lie so boldly and easily about killing so many civilians (and their culture), what else are you being lied to about? Don't take everything you hear as fact... news channels, media outlets, presidents... all have their own agendas. Western society has more access to information that ever before, but people need to learn how to sift through "facts" and find the truth. Don't be blinded by patriotism.

Garbage – When I Grow Up Lyrics 18 years ago
I always figured that this song was meant to be somewhat ironic, as all four members were very much adults (i.e. "grown up") when this song was written.
I see it as written from a younger person's point of view, speaking about sex and youthful indescrections (partying, unprotected sex, having a bad temper, ... the helicopter suggests danger and being a bit wild and out of the ordinary), but then saying "When I grow up, I'll be stable." I think the "stable" part is the key here, as they are saying this behavior will stop, when experience kind of shows that it probably won't (back to the irony I mentioned before). There are definately sexual overtones, but I don't think it is the sole focus, it is more of an example of generally wild behavior (perhaps Shirley's choice of wild youthful behavior??). Oh, and I once read an interview where she mentioned golden showers, and this was a good few years before this song was ever released. Kind of interesting.
