System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 18 years ago
Although the song does quote from the Bible, it is not about Jesus. As has been quoted manytimes in this waaaaay to long thread, it is an exploration on the idea of why dying from an OD is looked at differently as say cancer. Although the song was originally titled Suicide, the name was changed because the song is not about suicide per se. It is more about how an OD is seen as suicide by society even though the addiction that lead to the OD is really a disease. At the beginning of the song you can hear "rolling suicide" being whispered, I'm pretty sure it's just a cue for the taping that they didn't bother to remove for one reason or another.

"Wake up,
Grab a brush and put a little (makeup),
Grab a brush and put a little,
Hide the scars to fade away the (shakeup)
Hide the scars to fade away the,
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Here you go create another fable"

The addict starts off the day hiding his addiction, covering up and making excuses.

"You wanted to,"

Outsiders look at the addict and say he is in this situation because he wanted to be.

"I don't think you trust,
In, my, self righteous suicide,"

The addict tells off the outsider, all the while knowing he is full of shit and killing himself, but he is unable to stop. Also might be taken from Father Armeni, but I haven't seen any verification of this. Someone mentioned wikipedia, but it should be noted that anyone can edit wikipedia so it is not a "sure thing" source for anything.

"I, cry, when angels deserve to die, Die,"

Everyone is upset about the addict destroying his life. But after all, he did it to himself right, so he must deserve it. The addict is a good person, so he is like an angel.

"Father/Father/Father/Father
Father/ Into your hands/I/commend my spirit,
Father, into your hands,

Why have you forsaken me,
In your eyes forsaken me,
In your thoughts forsaken me,
In your heart forsaken, me oh,"

Addict knows he is going to die, and becomes angry with God. He asks the same questions as Jesus and millions of other people have asked when their world is going to shit. This might also be directed at organized religion, which has a bad record of ostriscising (sp?) people instead of helping them. Yes I know lots of people have been helped recover from drug problems by organized religion. (Just look what they did for our president :P )

PS This site really needs a moderater to clean up the stupid arguments and duplicate posts. It could probably be knocked down to 2 pages instead of the current 27.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 18 years ago
"I woke the same as any other day
Except a voice was in my head
It said seize the day, pull the trigger
Drop the blade, and watch the rolling heads"

I woke up one morning thinking, I'm gonna take a chance and to hell with anyone who gets in my way. The symbolism here is execution by guillotine.

"I stole a thousand beggar's change
And gave it to the rich"

Capitolism at its finest.

"I dangled from the power lines
And let the martyrs stretch"

I did everything we are always told is bad and dangerous, even though it hurts the people who really care about me. Symbolism here dangling from powerlines is the extreme form of running with scissors, and letting the martyrs stretch is refering to execution by hanging (something that often happens to martyrs).

"One more time around might do it"

Lying to yourself, I'll get it right if I just keep trying.

"Words you say never seem
To live up to the ones inside your head
The lives we make never seem
To ever get us anywhere but dead"

True and true, your never as good as you think you are and you can't take it with you.

"I wallowed in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs"

I lived the way I see everybody else.

"I woke the same as any other day you know
I should have stayed in bed"

I just realized I made some really bad choices, and I would rather not face them.

"And I learned that I was a liar
Just like you"

In the end, we are all just lying to ourselves about what's important in life.

At least that's always been my take on it :)

Temple of the Dog – Wooden Jesus Lyrics 18 years ago
It means you can't buy your way into heaven. People like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are the scum of the earth. They beg poor people for money so they can live in mansions and buy diamond mines in Africa. All the while telling their followers that if they give their money, God will make them rich.

Soundgarden – Burden in My Hand Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about people who are full of themselves. They think everyone around them is a burden. They hurt everyone and everything that they love. Then the feel guilty and try to drown the pain with drugs or alcohol, making things worse. In the end, when everyone can see what they really are, they plead for simpathy and claim it was all just a mistake.
