Shinedown – Sound of Madness Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this might actually refer to two different mindsets.

In the opening verses, I'm not sure the song is actually directed at people who are "just" emo or spend a lot of time feeling sorry for themselves. It could all just be metaphor of course, but when it's talking about "another loose canon gone bipolar" or "I think you need a shotgun blast," that seems to be talking about people who are not just sullen, but violently misanthropic. I think it's referring to people who indulge in petty violence and crime and think that their fucked up backstory justifies it.

The second part, with "tombstone mentality," I think refers to people who think they've basically lost at life, nothing can come of it and they might as will give up and wait for everything to be okay after they die.

The social disease thing - There's a lot of people who when the time comes to face up to what they've done blame how society has forced them to become the person they are and to do the things they do, but there are social programs in place to help disadvantaged people get out of that cycle that most of them haven't tried to take advantage of. If it's a disease... take your medicine.

Sleeping with a gun... Probably mostly metaphor, but Paranoid wackos and soldiers in the real shit sleep with their guns.

Hedley – Johnny Falls Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think it's limited to bullies and mean girls, even though it does apply to that. I think it's about (as said earlier) any time you try to change yourself to accomodate someone else, realize you've always hated them anyway, and decided "well, fuck you."

I had a job where I was supposed to lie to people. Call center, 8 hour shift, tell people someone was going to come fix something, or someone would call them back to negotiate a refund, or whatever, even though I knew full well these things would never happen. I could get better at lying, or I could say "I just realized what I was really hired for and I'm not going to be here tomorrow morning."

I'm pretty sure it's relevant, because willful lying pisses me off, and I would hate myself if I willfully lied to people for a living.

Muse – Soldier's Poem Lyrics 16 years ago
Everyone's really intent on these songs being about the war/occupation in Iraq but I think that's not exactly right. More like inspired by the conflict without actually being about it.

Note the last line "and there never was"

It's about the general situation that someone who will never see the fighting can make the deciscion to send soldiers somewhere to die. Iraq comes to mind and Iraq probably inspired it because that's where westerners are fighting in this generation.

Papa Roach – Getting Away With Murder Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh no! This song could have political connotations! Except no one knows anything about politics except ME!

Boo-fucking-hoo

People in Rock bands have opinions on things too, and if you disagree and have a problem with their enhanced capacity to share their opinion, that's your problem.

As for what the song means to me it seems to not quite perfectly match one of:

1)Someone who is doing horrible things, "just following orders" and is delighted to have some sort of horrible punishment hanging over their head if they don`t comply, because it completely exuses them from what they`re doing. By being threatened into doing whatever it is they escape judgement from others and from themself.

2) Someone who is doing what their told and really being forced into it because of threat of some kind of punishment but they are happy that whatever their doing is going to somehow bring about the destruction of whoever is in charge. "You're the master, and I am craving this diasaster" the "murder" they are getting away with is the murder of the person calling the shots, they're getting away with it because they appear loyal or at least subservient.

3)Someone who is doing terrible things to some other person or persons and is aware that their behaviour is ultimately self-destructive. They are alternately remorseful and overwhelmed with the sense of power they get from getting away with it.

In all cases what they're doing might actually be murder, or it could be something else malicious.

Dead Kennedys – Holiday in Cambodia Lyrics 16 years ago
I think there's something a lot of you are missing.

The consensus is this song is talking about people who think they know what the worst part of the world is really like and how to fix it, but really their clueless. And there's an implied "not like me, *I'm* clued in." there.

You're not.

Okay, there's a small chance you really know what it is to suffer like in a Cambodian labour camp, but since you seem to have internet access and still be alive, the odds are poor.

The mistake here isn't not knowing what it's like in the third world. The mistake is thinking you know.

As for those of you who think this is about how your damned rich, white oppressors wouldn't survive in a place like the Cambodia of the 70s... You'd hardly fare any better.

You can't be hard enough to survive something like that. Something like that can break your body as surely as a bullet and there`s about as much you can do about it.

Disease and starvation kill people. It doesn`t matter if you think your a badass because you live in a dirty apartment and your neighbor got shot. It doesn`t give you any special kind of protection.

Surviving or dying in a situation like that isn`t even something you can predict. It's like the shipwreck stories where some skinny lil bugger hangs onto a piece of debris all night until someone rescues him while the big, tough guy beside him froze and slipped into the water after only half an hour.

A soft-bodied early twenties college student who's never gone more than twelve hours without eating in their life might survive while someone who's had plenty of bones broken in fights, struggled with drug addiction, and been in and out of jail might die.

And if you think someone needs to be sent to one of those camps just because you find their racial/economic/educational/whatever group distasteful... If you really think that... then you're the fucking monster. You're the person idealists enlist in armies to fight, and you're the monster pulling the strings to create a war for them in the first place.

Ah, right, and the dark impulse he's fighting is more than likely some drug/doing things to get that drug

He's fighting some dark impulse he wishes he didn't have and simultaneously rejecting and begging for help.

So what if you can see
The darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become

It doesn't matter if you understand or not, you can't help. No one can help me.

Help me believe
It’s not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal

And then an immediate turn around. It's too much, please help me.

Back and forth.

Three Days Grace – Pain Lyrics 17 years ago
I think what's going on here is in the Point of view of the song the world is horrible and hurtful and you've basically got two options. You can insulate yourself from it and become completely detached, or you can face the world and let it hurt you.

And he'd rather face the world and let it hurt him. If pain is all the world has to offer then he'll take that over hiding from it.

"Take my hand and I'll show you a world that you can understand." seems to indicate he's trying to convince someone else they'll be happier if they take the same approach.

Sounds more like someone got the girl hooked on something that's gonna kill her.

Also this may be about an overdose on a very potent drug of some kind, or a drug that was improperly prepared and is has become lethal.

Ah, right, also a major part of this song is that it's an attack on using religion as an excuse to justify a war or bloody mindedness. "Do it in the name of heaven you can justify it in the end" is sarcastic.

Well, the soldiers who fight in wars definitely aren't "tin soldiers." They're brave or hateful of full of bloodlust but they aren't cold or heartless.

I think what the One Tin Soldier, signifies, Orph, is that there is no winning. He's on the victorious side, but he's hollow and he's gained nothing. So he just rides away and it comes off as being sad and broken.

Ah right, you ever notice how we never get this miscreants posting on threads for unpopular bands?

It's because they're fishing for hate. Y'know, trolls. You get more vitriol in response if you attack something a lot of people like.

Also, they are 12 to 13 years old.

I'm strongly disagreeing with the rest of you here...

To me it isn't a love song and it isn't about being content, it's about the pain of loss.

The first time I heard this I didn't like it. But since it got heavily overplayed and I had no choice but to listen to it twenty or thirty times I started actually hearing the lyrics and I realized how brilliant it is.

It sets a up perfect scene. Lying on the beach or looking up on the sky and does an excellent job of establishing what a perfect scenario this simple perfect situation is.

Then "And in this moment I am happy, happy" and the second "happy," the way he sings it, just sounds full of gut-wrenching misery. It's a weak claim of happiness in the face of suffering. Then "I wish you were here"

How could a happier situation exist? It can't, but a happy situation only brings thoughts of how that person is missing.

Then the "my life's a roller coaster bit," that kinda means to me theres happiness in a situation until the realization that someone's missing hit's home, and it's followed up utter misery. His life goes up and down like a roller coaster.

Now, I'm not missing anyone. I haven't been separated from anyone important by death or by a soured relationship, that's just how the song struck me.

And even though I don't particularly care for its sound it's the goddamned saddest song I've ever heard.

The Tea Party – Samsara Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, my understanding of the term "Samsara" is that it is the term in Hinduism and Buddhism for the cycle of death and rebirth (Which brings only pain until one can transcend it and escape rebirth)

Just glancing at the lyrics here it seems to be about someone who has studied and prayed in various religions and he's no longer accepting of the Eastern mystisism.

Seems on the surface to be some sort of demon or spirit or creature or something claiming control of the earth after a nuclear war. But that seems just a little off.
