hoooooooooooooooo-ly fuck, you guys. the discussion of Foo records on here is seriously blowing my fucking mind. "The Colour and the Shape" is the best Foo Fighters album, hands fucking down. it's in the running for best album of this generation, as far as i'm concerned. it's untouchable. the first album lacked the kind of scope that Dave showcased on later releases, namely TCATS and, yes, "There is Nothing Left to Lose", regardless of what you might think. an aside: just because TINLTL is comprised of mostly slower materia does NOT mean it's not one of the Foo Fighters' finest releases. in fact, it definitely comes in a clean second-place after "The Colour...". |

i can only give write about what this song meant to be -- not what it is definitely about. last spring, when this album was in heavy rotation in my CD player, i was romantically involved with a girl at school who was originally from another country. she was the personification of "flighty" -- moving from emotion to emotion, and then back again, at the drop of a hat. one night, she'd spend all hours outside with me, the next, she'd ignore my calls. she was, in every sense, a gypsy -- one inclined to a nomadic, way of life. i finally got to a point where this song made all kinds of sense to me; i felt as if i would have been better had i stayed an ignorant, care-free child ("is there a place that we can go to teach the children not to grow?") and that it would be much better to just forget the whole experience. i felt like an integral part of the essence of 'me' had been taken; that, when friends came to my door, it was all a show -- no one really lived here anymore. this was all almost a year ago. i've washed my hands of it and i'm over it, but i was just listening to this album again tonight, and it's truly amazing the places music can take you. the conventions of time and space need not apply when music is involved, |

tree, you're an idiot. know that about yourself. i just attended a question & answer session with sufjan, and he said this song was inspired by time spent at camp as a little kid, around the age of 8. he and his brother saw what they believed to be a terrible mutant wasp monster, and so they ran off, scared out of their wits. after that, every airborne thing they saw - be it a bird, a bug, or plastic bag floating in the wind - they were sure was this mutant wasp monster. the song was inspired by the beauty and INNOCENCE of childhood imagination. |

in reference to what imisskurt said: while i won't say that this song definitely isn't about kurt, it seems to me that you (among countless others) always want to pigeonhole dave's writing into song's about kurt. maybe i'm just crazy, but i HIGHLY doubt kurt cobain and whatever "legacy" he left behind have much bearing on the present-day writing of the Foo Fighters. p.s. foo fighters > nirvana by far. |
