I put this one in the same context as Street Spirit and Idioteque, apocalyptic songs about the end of the world. All of them very scary songs.
One of the best on HTTT, and perhaps the one which conveys the albums message best. A highly political message about the way society in modern england is/was taking, after 9/11 and all. I think Yorke felt the Blair administration was clearly wrong, and he is very good at amplifying his emotions in songs.
In my mind The Gloaming is, as Street Spirit, about seeing the end of the world and not being able to do anything about it. The thought is too horrifying to handle for York, and, once again as Street Spirit, he doesn't set clear lyrics to it, just broken images or fragments. |

I believe this is about witnessing an accident, and battling the fears that it could be someone close to you. Daughter/son perhaps? It may be a personal experience Gabriel had at some time, and the first verse describes it. The rest is making up how he would react if it indeed was someone close.
A good deal of the songs on Up is about various aspects of death, and this is no exception. Great song. |

Kjartan said on a documentary about Takk that the song is about an old farmer that is dying. He is looking out over his fields and thinking on what he has accomplished. The image fits the song so well.. Enough to make you cry. |

Although the subject matter here is utterly gruesome (and of course very real and happening every day), I don't think the song is meant to be "about" rape or prostitution. If it was then Colin wouldn't have made the point _this_ clear. It would be more like he does in "Odalisque". He has majored in creative writing, remember?
I believe, like others have pointed out, that the song is exactly what it says in the title, a tale told to scare someone. It's so exaggerated and graphic that, to me at least, it seems like some sort of gallows humor.
Of course I don't think that rape and prostitution should be taken lightheartedly, but in this context I think it's a cruel tale to scare someone into sumission. |

Thats no reason is it? It's like saying "it's this way because thats the way it is". :p I could put anyone of my favourite band on top of an all-time-greatest list and say it's obvious why they're #1. You gotta explain the obvious, give one or two reasons/facts why Jimmy Page rules the earth. Might not be so obvious to all those who are not so into the zeppeliners.
Anyway, both Beatles, Stones and Zeppelin are contestors to greatest band title, but the beatles were first. And thats practically all that counts in rock history. Led Z wouldn't have been Led Z without the beatles OR the stones. And the same for the stones. And the beatles. Just add another band some years/decades before them. Everybody's influencing each other. What's really unique? Nothing.

Well, I don't like it all that much. They sound like Saybia. (Danish band that no one here has probably heard about. Known for just playing songs that are whining and overly melancolic.) Still, Weezer is lightyears better than them, even on this one, but here (and on some others on Make Believe) they sound like them. Which is starting to annoy me. |

I don't think people should await the "next" pinlerton or blue album too eagerly. The blue album is over ten years old now, and of course Rivers and the band has changed since then. Also, even as good as Weezer is, it takes some skill to follow up an album that is as good as those two. Not many bands or artists has managed such a feat, usually the first one or two is the best throughout their career. It will probably be the same with Weezer. That said, Beverly Hills is a feel-good song and Make Belive a good album. If people are too busy screaming for the next pinkerton or whatever I think they will probably overlook it when it comes, because the expectations are way too high. Pardon me if I'm being blasphemic, but it's kind of like waiting for the next Jesus. We'll be too stuck up with the old one to actually recognize the new real thing.
I think Beverly Hills is great, or at least good enough. |
