Roger Waters – Amused To Death Lyrics

I hope everyone noticed the very last line of the song (and album) is "nineteen eighty four," the same name as George Orwell's book criticizing totalitarianism. I found that really clever and kinda lucky Alf's story takes place then. |

I didnt say the USA havnt played their part, but the states entered the war after pearl habour, so it wasnt a strictly benovolent act was it? And no, The states had little to do with the fall of communism in the USSR at all. That was an internal struggle. |

Flip Flopper.
Anyway I think this and "Young Lust" are the only real all out rock songs Pink Floyd have isnt it? That's quite amusing for a Rock band! |

Roger Waters – Leaving Beirut Lyrics

I downloaded this only last night, and although I love Roger Waters, I have to say I was mildy disappointed. The narrative style story was a little too much and made me think of some good (but not great) writer jacking off into a mic. Also the line "are these the people we should bomb" sounds awkward. ALSO (and no one can help this, of course,) but Roger is sounding old..
I suspect it will grow on me, however, like most of his stuff. |

Bob Dylan – Maggie's Farm Lyrics

Shit, Marx must have had one hell of a poetic, philisophical, perceptive mind then, napoleoninrags, if what he wrote "word for word" was the section I quoted. It's good that Bob Dylan makes you think tho. |

Oh yeah, replapser, complete genius:
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am,
But everybody wants you
To be just like them.
I've read deeper, more eloquent things on 14 year old girls' livejournal accounts. |

Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay Lyrics

Fuck you assholes for saying this is about his dog. Ill never be able to listen to it the same way again.
But then again he might have been joking around, if that's what he said. I mean it's sung pretty tenderly..like one lover to another. If it IS about his dog then he sounds like he has a pretty dam close relationship with her, prehaps boardering on the illegal.... |

Also, the idea of this song having two meanings is pretty cool, considering it'll make the listener himself ask, "just what is going on here?" thus placing him firmly in Mr. Jones shoes himself... |

Calling a song with difficult lyrcial content just a weird 'drug song' is a very easy and lazy way to explain it, in my opinion.
Anyway I think both the homosexual theory and Anal-y-sis' thoughts fit very well. Why can't it be both? Bob Dylan is a pretty creative, intelligent guy, I can certainly see him writing a song with one idea in mind and seeing how the words turn out, then playing with a few images to capture something else entirely. I know when I write I find and develop many layers, and Dylan is an infinitly better wordsmith than humble I.
Anyways, regarding the "Dylan wouldnt sing about dirty, loveless gay sex because, dammit, he was a lovable, completely political correct soul enlightened forever to the plight of the "freaks and outsiders"...well..I would disagree. Everyone has a cruel streak in them, and the man he's describing in the song warrants jibes because he DENIES his lifestyle. And gay annon. sex does happen..especially if the guy has a wife.. Dylan was more of a realist than an idealist, I think, more than some people might realize.. |

Shit I just wrote a long post here, but it ain't posting. Anyway @inpraiseoffolly.... I never really thought about how offensive people might find ww2 imagery in an artists work, but have you seen the movie, "The Wall?" You cant deny Waters incorperates a ton of Nazi imagery there (they even throw up the old Nazi salute)...and all over a self absorbed musician. Now, THAT'S a little trivial...
My point being, I dont really think Roger is above using Nazi references in his work... |

inpraiseoffolly, Im wondering what you thought of the movie, "The Wall" where a self- absorbed musician (Pink- played by Bob Geldof) turns into a dictator of Hitleresque proportions. They even have the crowd throw up the old Nazi salute..and there's no mistaking all the crossed hammer imagery. I really don't think Roger is above using blatant Nazi references in his work.
ps. this isnt a flame or anything..I never thought about how a musicians employment of ww2 references might be offensive to others and I can kind of see your point. |

"Honestly now, this is just excessive use of profanity. I liked Pink Floyd when they wrote intelligent lyrics, rather than crap like this. That means almost every song except this one at least earns my respect, whether I like it or not. This songs brings down a perfectly good album." -inpraiseoffolly.
dude, it's satire! Waters (and yeah it is Waters singing it- there's no mistaking that English, nasal howl) uses profanity because the character he's portraying uses profinity. |

welllllllll...ok. I guess you could argue that this is a universal call from all those people, being how Water's nor Gilmore sing it, rather the families, wives, children etc. BUT, lyric-wise I don't see how you can read all that into it. Maybe if you saw the video or heard the song, thro the voices of those people..you might realize the significance..
Well at least we can all agree that the song is awesome. |

I'm a straight male and even I have to admit John's voice sounds fucking sexy here. This song continues to blow me away. The absolute perfect rock n roll song- raw, passionate and still innocent. Absolutly Amazing. John was doing this before Kurt Cobain was even born. |

Another reason I think this is because the singer sounds vicious and driven. Lower class people are usually pretty broken and pathetic- or at least they are Roger's world -think "Sheep", then compare the guy in this song to the guy in "Dogs"..pretty similar right? Both corporate types. |

Pink Floyd – Bring the Boys Back Home Lyrics

^^ Wrong. You are talking the song and adding the context of the entire album to your opinion. This is just ONE song, and this ONE song is a plea to BRING THE BOYS BACK HOME..does that make sense? CAnt you really see how silly your over analysis sounds when there are only 4 lines to the entire song, 3 of which are identical? |

Pink Floyd – Not Now John Lyrics

^ I disagree, I think The singer and his friend John are upper middle class- maybe managers in a facotry and looking to climb the corprate ladder. I think they are fairly well educated, hence talking about politics over a beer, and discussing the "film show" which are generally only made by people in some kind of power. Or it could just be that Roger's voice sounds educated, even while potraying the lower classes, so its hard to tell. |

Personally I think Hitler wasn't included because he, even now, exsits as more a mythological figure, than an actual one. Roger wanted to equate these other more familiar figures to senile of folks in a home, and it would have disrupted the vibe of the song if someone as potently evil as Hitler was included in the song. |

Pink Floyd – The Dogs of War Lyrics

^^that might be correct but what lacks is passion. I have a feeling that is Roger wasn't writing about the war beforehand, David and co. wouldn't be doing it now. Sounds like they just flipped open a newspaper, read the first headline regarding war and decided to write a song about it because hey, that's what Pink Floyd do. |

I also like the line "nothing's changed, but the surrounding bullshit that has grown". I think Eddie is trying to say the surrounding bullshit is all the fuss made about him by the media etc. but it comes off sounding like it's his own ego that is bullshit. Pretty apropiate really. Eddie Vedder is a great singer and lyricist but he does have a bit of a Jesus complex. |
