Al Green – You Ought To Be With Me Lyrics 18 years ago
"You don't have to waste my time,if you want to be a friend of mine"
Hell, yeah,Al.Tell her about it!We got plenty of FRIENDS,now show me something a friend would NOT.
Know what I'm saying?

Chic – Good Times Lyrics 18 years ago
Good Times is the symbolic cultural rejection of the Black"movement"in favor of the party materialistic lifestyle still prevalent today.
"Lets put an end to this stress and srife,I want to live the sporting life"In other words,no more confronting white society, now we want what white society has and to hell with the Negroes at the bottom.

The Chambers Brothers – Time Lyrics 18 years ago
A truly revolutionary song,an anti-establishment anthem for the young rebels of 1968.
"Thinking about the subway, the love has gone away-thats a rejection of the adult world's mindless attitude toward work, taking the subway downtown where there is no joy or nurturance.
"My soull has been psychedilesized",a clever way at taking a jab at the white blues afficionados and Hendrix worshippers who tok the black experience and twisted it to their own vision.

Ice Cube – Black Korea Lyrics 19 years ago
Cube wrote that song for a reason and if you know any black folks who grew up in South Central you know that many of those Korean storeowners ARE racist.Ever heard of Latasha Harlins?
Having said that,I think Cube's energies would be better spent on taking on some serious issues today rather than that fluff he has been putting out on the screen the past few years. Its shameful that he has been politically castrated.

The Spinners – How Could I Let You Get Away Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is a real gem.It was written by a lady named Yvette Davis and God knows what led her to write the lyrics.
I have wondered if it could POSSIBLY be a song about a father or mother who lost their child in a custody case and thats why so many game references.Worth a thought.

Curtis Mayfield – Move On Up Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah,I thought he said that too and that lyric always surprised me.
Yet the song itself is inpiring. For the young Black generation especially that song had a lot of power back then."Your folks might understand you by and by".Many older blacks did not go for the big naturals and militant attitudes of the younger folks.Curtis was telling them that one day they would see that the youngsters were right about their passions. And he was VERY right about that final rapprochement.

The Association – Along Comes Mary Lyrics 19 years ago
Oldriff got it right! All of us knew Mary was a metaphor for weed.
The funny thing was that The Association was one of the STRAIGHTEST groups around back then. They pulled a "Nixon goes to China"trick on the world.

The Byrds – Renaissance Fair Lyrics 19 years ago
The ultimate hippie tune.I was at Monterey Pop Festival taking a piss in one of the portable toilets when the Byrds opened their Sat Night set with Renaissance Fair.
Walking back to my seat I was in a state of ecstacy."I think that maybe I'm dreaming".Damn right!

The Temptations – Papa Was A Rollin' Stone Lyrics 19 years ago
I was teaching in a very rough New Orleans high school when "Papa"came out and for most of the kids this song resonated very painfully.Pops was rarely around even back then. Its much worse now and I really don't think this song would get airplay today if it was released as a new song. Its way too devastating to the black psyche.

Rod Stewart – Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? Lyrics 19 years ago
This song was the ultimate disco -bar one night stand song.Very vivid and desriptive.Lush, surging wall of sound type tune.
Lots of rockers mock and clown this song. Its a great tune, though.Goes on a little too long at the end but one of my favorites from 1979.

Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit Lyrics 19 years ago
To dancingdays-NO,not everyone should do acid!PUH-LEEZE don't perp that lie! That stuff opens doors a lot of people are not ready to explore. It strips your ego defenses bare and many cannot see themselves so brutally honestly.
Yet White Rabbit is a true masterpiece. The mood it creates is eerie and haunting.Back in 1967,we ALL knew what Grace was talking about!

Donovan – Atlantis Lyrics 19 years ago
Atlantis is the ultimate counterculture song. That famous line"And,as the elders of our time choose to remain blind, let us rejoice, and dance and sing and ring in the new,Hail Atlantis"
Our elders were conducting a terrible war in Vietnam.Students were battling cops on campuses. The Panthers were fighting for their survival.Nixon was waging a war against the New Left and the hippies. So the song Atlantis was a metaphor for the new world we were going to create.
Thats how I saw the song then and still see it today.

Buffalo Springfield – For What It's Worth Lyrics 19 years ago
I was 20 when this song came out and it was powerful then tho I have to admit it got somewhat overplayed over the years.
One line that always puzzled me-"Young people speaking their minds, getting so much resistance from behind".I interpreted this to mean that in our OWN generation we had many right wing kids who supported the Establishment, the cops and the military. And we often had to fight THEM in the streets as well.
What the lyric meant to Steven Stills I don't know. But thats my take on it.

The Byrds – Why? Lyrics 19 years ago
Why is a classic depiction of two very different views of life. When it came out in 1967 the hippie movement was at its height and we were rebelling, like the girl in the song,at all the liimits the adult world had put on us.
They said the world was a hard cold place. We knew that our parents lived ina world where their joy had been crushed long ago.We were out to create a new reality.Whether we did or not is not the point."We'had just begun it"and no longer wanted to be slaves to the death culture
