Bloc Party – This Modern Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Another great song from Bloc Party. But the lyrics:- "You told me you wanted to eat up my sadness Well jump on, enjoy, you can gorge away" I'd always heard as:- "You told me you wanted to eat up my sandwich Well go on, enjoy, you can gorge away" - It made me laugh. I now realise it sounds like a rejected subway ad! |
The Clash – (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais Lyrics | 17 years ago |
truthbealiar, "Boho: Your version doesn't make sense. How do newsgroups turn success into money?" Eh? I presume you mean turn rebellion into money? Have you heard of Rupert Murdoch? Look on the good old London Stock Exchange and see how Reuters, B Sky B, et al. are valued and then come back and tell me they don't make money out of rebellion. |
Arctic Monkeys – Mardy Bum Lyrics | 17 years ago |
'Mardy' is as Nottinghamese as 'eh up me duck'.... http://www.jeanscorner.com/nottinghamslang.htm I was born and grew up in Nottingham and when I moved to Yorkshire, they looked at me blankly when I said things like "don't be a mardy arse", etc. |
The Clash – Janie Jones Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about there being a lack of balance in your life. You feel hard done by (doing a crappy job) and do things that make you feel less dissatified about your position and your place. When in fact you're simply just spreading the dissatifaction and unhappiness. "We're all linked together like a chain reaction" as The Beastie Boys, big fans of The Clash rapped. i.e. One person living a crap life will make another person live a crap life. The poor worker and the prostitute are linked by the cause and effect of their position on the margins of society. Like all Clash songs, Jannie Jones full of righteous anger at the imbalance, inequality, unfairness and damn right crappyness of life. It screams: "fuck that!" Punks are just inverted hippies. |
Leonard Cohen – Everybody Knows Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich" "Everybody wants a box of chocolates" Cohen is a genius. |
The Specials – Stereotype Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is about how stereotypes don't really exist but how people try to conform to stereotypes and do what they think is expected of them. i.e., I'm young, I've got to get drunk and have a good time. I've got to show everyone how normal and fun-loving I am... |
The Specials – Pressure Drop Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The Toots And Maytals orginal is better. But this is still a fantastic version as is The Clash's. |
The Specials – Friday Night, Saturday Morning Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Chav anthem. A grim-faced view of the lumpenproletariat in the UK. |
The Clash – The Right Profile Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A beautiful song. It begins and ends fantastically like most Clash songs. I absolutely love listening to this song. It's so effortless but immensely effective. |
The Clash – (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Great song. One of my all time favourites. However, I think the 7th verse:- The NEW GROUPS are not concerned With what there is to be learned They got BURTON SUITS, ha you think it's funny Turning rebellion into money Would be better off:- The NEWSGROUPS are not concerned With what there is to be learned They got BULLETINS, ha you think it's funny Turning rebellion into money - That's how I heard the lyrics first-off, prior to further listening. Moreover, I think the second version makes a far more biting Strummerism. |
Jimmy Cliff – Many Rivers To Cross Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a very soulful and upsetting song, not merely by the nature the cutting lyrics but the musical backdrop that so effectively laments. It's as powerful and emotional dirge, as I've ever heard. Jimmy Cliff, himself, meanwhile, is very much a forgotten hero. One day, I think and hope he'll be discovered by the mainstream as the great musican and man he undoubtedly is. There truly are - many rivers to cross - in life. |
Arctic Monkeys – Settle for a Draw Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about compromise and apathy. 'Noone's gonna start a revolution So why do we even moan?' |
Bob Dylan – The Man in Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Fantastic song. And a fantastic cover by The Clash. Bob Dylan is the greatest artist of all time And The Clash are the greatest band of all time. They both had so much to say. 'The only music that really matters.' |
The Clash – Ivan Meets G.I. Joe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The Clash truly were the soundtrack to the Cold War. And more than relevant to the current geo-political state of the globe. |
Bob Dylan – Dignity Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Dignity never been photographed." Yes, indeed. Bob, you are a genius. |
The Clash – Clash City Rockers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"You see the rate they come down the escalator Now listen to the tube train accelerator Then you realise that you got to have a purpose Or this place is gonna knock you out sooner or later" Glorious! |
The Smiths – This Charming Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Why ponder life's complexities when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?" Fantastic lyrics. That clearly shout: if you're affluent you can afford to be apathetic. |
The Ordinary Boys – Talk Talk Talk Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about idle chit chat and how boring and dis-satisfying it really is. |
The Specials – Nite Klub Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"I won't dance in a club like this All the girls are slags and the beer tastes just like piss" Love it. - All too true of most clubs I've got to say. |
The Clash – Ghetto Defendant Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about the drugs business in the ghetto's of the world not wanting change. But simply rich pickings. NOT TEAR GAS NOR BATON CHARGE THAT STOPS YOU TAKING THE CITY - They're not harmed or affected by the draconian clampdowns aimed at the ghetto dwellers, while: THE ADMIRAL SNORES COMMAND SUBMARINES BOIL IN OCEANS WHILE THE ARMIES FIGHT WITH SUNS [We've got our priorities wrong]. |
The Clash – Garageland Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Always gets me riled this song. Someone should release this tune to a set of new lyrics about the recent rioting in Paris:- After the rioting Their only concern Restoring the romantic image - Of the city They think that matters most We say: what about the rest? When shall we all be: set free? We're past angry oh-a-oh Shall we ever be: Haaapppppyyy And yet that's all I see on TV! Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie Lie after Lie |
Arctic Monkeys – Mardy Bum Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Mardy is a Nottingum [Nottingham] expression Mardy bum - is said to a girl Mardy bugger - is said to a boy Its another word for grumpy or downbeat. Other Nottingum expressions that may be included in a forthcoming Monkey's album include: Tabs = ears Tegs = teeth Geggs = glasses A-up me duck = Hello there Monk On = feeling of unhappiness It's a bit black over bills mothers = weathers awful Youf = young person :-) |
The Clash – The Call Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Maybe I wanna see the wheatfields Over Kiev and down to the sea". A wonderful protest song of militarism. The Clash really did soundtrack the Cold War |
Bob Dylan – Mississippi Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down" I think there's a lot of Dylan's own psyche in that, although he continues to travel, I think its something that disquiets and unsettles him. |
Bob Dylan – Jokerman Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Jokerman = God. "Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants, Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response." |
Blondie – Heart of Glass Lyrics | 18 years ago |
An amazing song of how hurtful love can be and how fragile emotions are. |
The Stranglers – Duchess Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Reminds me of uni as well! Very English song, taking a swipe at middle-class snobbishness/pretentiousness. |
The Verve – Lucky Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song is about someone who is at first unhappy or depressed but soon realises how lucky he is. They're not facing poverty or hardship - they're lucky! |
Neil Young – Heart Of Gold Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about looking for something true and how difficult that is. |
Neil Young – Old Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about everyman's relationship with their father. Whether you like it or not, make a conscious decision or not, you compare yourself to your father. This song is reflecting on how like his father a man is, how he needs the same things and feels the same things. |
The Stone Roses – I Wanna Be Adored Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Ian Brown was a punk. He idolised The Clash and Joe Strummer. "I don't need to sell my soul." Strummer would have been proud. That's the ethos of punk. |
The Stone Roses – Fools Gold Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Its about avaracious desire and rejecting the selfish greed that surrounds us all. |
The Stone Roses – Waterfall Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I've always taken this to be about a woman who just keeps going... like a waterfall. Undeterred, resolute - a strong woman you can trust. |
The Doors – The End Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Anybody that loves The Doors, should listen to The Kinks. |
The Kinks – Sunny Afternoon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
If The Beatles had done this, the world would be humming its tune. |
The Kinks – Days Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A tender and beautiful song. The Kinks and The Clash were so much better than The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. But then anything popular soon becomes a bore. "I bless the light that shines on you believe me". - Simply beautiful. |
The Kinks – Dedicated Follower Of Fashion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A truly fantastic song. If The Beatles had done it, we'd have never heard the end of it. |
The Kinks – A Well Respected Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"... And he adores the girl next door, 'Cause he's dying to get at her... And he's oh, so fine, And he's oh, so healthy, In his body and his mind." I think that is magnificent. A very English song, taking a stab at middle-class, bourgeois pretentiousness. |
The Kinks – Lola Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A strange but charming and compelling song. The Kinks were the thinking man's Beatles |
The Kinks – Wonderboy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love this song. It makes me feel so happy and free. "Everybody is looking for the sun People strain their eyes to see But I see you and you see me And ain't that wonder?" Simply beautiful. |
The Clash – Something About England Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Musically this is said to be something of a mess. - I disagree. But the lyrics are as wistful and poignant as Joe and Mick ever got. A superb song that *should* have found its way onto the Essential Clash album along with Death or Glory, All The Young Punks, The Call Up and The Card Cheat. |
The Clash – Charlie Don't Surf Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Sgt. Pepper has hit it well and truly, squarely on the head. |
The Clash – Groovy Times Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Ain't things Groovy... Ain't you sick of hearing that for the last thirty years" once exclaimed Strummer. That's what its about; pretending things are a-okay, when they're quite clearly not. Musically, socially, culturally and politically looking the other way in the name of entertainment and supposéd happiness. |
Bob Dylan – Tangled Up in Blue Lyrics | 18 years ago |
For me, this is the greatest song I've ever heard. Simply magnificent. If I compiled my top-50 songs of all time, over half would be Dylan masterpieces with this heqading the bill. The others being drawn from The Clash, Bob Marley and The Verve. |
The Clash – The Street Parade Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Very beautiful tune. Almost dream-like. Great use of Caribbean drums. I think the Parade be seen in a very positive or negative Light. POSITIVE: A parade of righteous rebellion you imbed yourself in. NEGATIVE: You shall eventually fade into the distance despite your best efforts/intentions through inaction and accepting the street parade as it is instead of how it should be. I hope you understand: Is it idealistic saying you've got to be strong, hold on to your ethics and never fade into the status quo, making your own street parade? Or is it saying your idealism and ethics will get lost up in another parade for better or worse… I think all of the above. It’s a very deep song if you fully immerse yourself. Like all other Clash songs. I think in the future they’ll be truly held up as the only band that really matters. To me they are. |
Bob Dylan – Love Minus Zero/No Limit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a fantastic love song leaving a distinctly bittersweet taste in the mouth upon its ending:- “My love she's like some raven At my window with a broken wing.” Love minus zero, indeed. The ending really makes me think about love and how when doted your perhaps not your real self, sometimes, ridiculously dependent upon your partner. |
Willy Mason – Hard Hand to Hold Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"It's a hard hand to hold that is looking for control It is tempting to fight, when you know that you're right" All true. A song surely about our preconceptions, the futility of imposing draconian controls and how it is always the most marginal that suffer the most, ie the homeless |
Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Great tune. "He's got this dream about buyin' some land He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands And then he'll settle down there's a quiet little town And forget about everything" Great lyrics. |
The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's a Bittersweet Symphony this life for sure. |
Bob Dylan – Maggie's Farm Lyrics | 19 years ago |
'Maggies Farm' for me is a masterpiece, wonderfully documenting the frustrations and inhumanity you encounter at work. You’ve got to serve somebody, in this case Maggie and her relations. I think a farm is fantastic metaphor for a company, organisation or even nation. You could even read the farm as a family, to which Dylan is related through marriage and no longer wishes to be part of. Genius, the man is a complete genius. |
