I have a slightly different take on this song.. some say it makes them think of a woman with an unwanted pregnancy. But I draw from my own life experience. To me, it is a person's attempt to comfort someone who has lost a child. I always thought of a friend of mine who lost her son at age 13 to a heart defect. Her courage was inspiring, and I knew I could not move that mountain for her. She had to let him go and go one without him.
This friend had cared for my daughter who had a profound genetic disability. I knew I would lose her at some point, but I did not know when. I lost her last fall. This song rings in my heat - "you are not alone in this" and reminds me of all those who have been through such terrible circumstances as me and my friend have.. and also of those who have not but work their very best to be supportive and hold my hand through this time, encouraging me not to 'lose my sight'... |

I am the mother of a disabled child, and often struggle with the meaning of it all... But this song assures me that there is a bigger picture.. What my daughter teaches people, even though she cannot speak - it's amazing. Sometimes it's just the message from God saying "Quit your bitchin". sometimes it's other things... |

I love the line "got a bible and a rosary, God I wish that you were close to me, guess I owe you an apology..." also, "I can't sleep when the bed sheet fights its way back to your side" - funny. Not real sure about the meaning of this song, except that it must be a marraige on the rocks, and maybe it's going to be 16 days until he sees her again... And he needs to come to terms with his commitment in that time... |

I listened to this song alot before and after 9-11-01 and I can't help but see the parallels with that event... It makes me sad. I know it wasn' written about that, but to me it sounds like someone who lost a loved one in one of the towers. |

In 1990, I got married and 3 days later my husband was shipped off to Germany. I joined him a couple of months later after I graduated high school. He picked me up at the airport and took me to the crappy little apartment he'd rented for us because it was all we could afford. So there we were, by ourselves, no family or friends, in a foreign country... He had discovered Zeppelin beyond Stairway during our separation, and he played this song on the stereo in our tiny little apartment and we danced close... We are still married to this day. This song expresses the solidity of a relationship like ours. |

To me, having grown up listening to Roy Acuff, among other traditional artists, this song speaks of the peace you feel when you hear that old music. When I hear the old songs, an image of a quiet living room, cool breeze moving the sheers in the windows, dimly lit, quiet conversations, tree frogs and crickets, voices of relatives who are now in the grave. I think this song speaks of that feeling. Beautiful! |

I don't know what all the lyrics mean, but the theme of the song, to me, is Time Reveals All. Verse 1 - Time reveals the person's intentions. Verse 2 - One's culture reveals her time(age). Have no idea what the rese means.
