The Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song...I agree with ruby on this one.

But I have noticed something completely off topic. Trent Reznor uses the main tune (melody) of this song, for the mid-point of the song, "With Teeth", but in a slightly different, key.

Anybody notice that the mid point of this song (Where Trent is saying "I cannot go through this again") has a tune to it, with a striking resemblence to the main tune of "Porcelina of The Vast Oceans" by the Smashing Pumpkins? It's slightly off tune, but the resemblence is striking. Seems Trent took an inspiration from SP for that part of the song.

I heard that a STUDIO version of "Vacant" exists, and isn't only just in live format. Is this true? And if so, if anyone has the STUDIO version of VACANT (NOT Passive) can anyone send it to me?

Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah...we all fucked up. It's "You can live in this illusion. You can choose to believe. You keep looking but you can't find the woods, While you're hiding in the trees."

So it's probably...about someone completely fucking oblivious to the reality that they're in. Trying to find reality, only to end up hiding in a very small part of it, that they find safe enough, or good enough.

The more I think about it...this does seem like a drug addiction song. Good analogy. It does make perfect sense.

The dream of past life being the effect the drug has on your mind.

The cage being the addiction you choose to keep to hide from reality.

The woods symbolizing the perfect world you strive to live in, but not finding it. Only in the end, to end up hiding behind the drug, and grasping little of that perfect world, if any, you wanted. But this one's only made up and not so perfect. Hence trees...not woods. The woods represents the non-illusionary reality you strive for. The trees represents the drug induced made up reality you're hiding within.

The woods thing gives it all away and actually does make it all make sense, and I know this from personal experiance.

This song very well may be about drug addiction afterall.

And furthermore this song is pretty much a knockoff of the David Bowie song "Crystal Japan", infact, it's almost precise. But has a few noticible differences, but if you've heard it, you can def. tell the similarities, which there are many.

IT HAS LYRICS! As the last person way above said it repeats the same thing over and over in the very first 15 seconds of the song.

BUT

It's barely audiable...it's almost whispered. But there ARE lyircs to this.

"The best thing about life is knowing you put it together..." is repeated a bunch of time..very VERY quietly at the begining untill the instrumentals of the song kick in. You'll barely notice them...thus why this has been dubbed an instrumental.

Nine Inch Nails – The Day the World Went Away Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about the death of Trent's grandmother.

Not only that, but it's more specifically about her funeral.

The entire bunch of lyrics is Trent speaking about the funeral priest guy burying his grandmother/cremating her.

On the outside, he looks calm and collected, knowing it's his job, it's what he has to do. But on the inside, it pains him to have to lay someone to rest forever. After years and years of doing this, it's left him with a plastic face forced to portray no emotion towards death even though he wants to. It leaves him knowing he just has to do his job and get it over with. Thus cold and grey.

The place that still remains and eats his fear and pain away, is his mind. His mind forces him remain apathetic about having to put someone to rest infront of many loved ones, breaking down.

The sweetest price the priest will have to pay? When he has to lay the entire world to rest and the whole world goes away.

This is actually the CONFIRMED AND REAL meaning to the song The Day The World Went Away.

It's Trent speaking to a priest about how he's so calm and collected while he burys someone/cremates them, while loved ones, and friends all around him, break down over the death of the dead person. In this case, his grandmother. He broke down...the priest remained calm, and just did his job as if he didn't care at all about her death.

The song is dedicated to him. And this is actually the TRUE meaning to the song.

Nine Inch Nails – All the Love in the World Lyrics 19 years ago
EDIT:

Maybe this song is totally dedicated to God.

God and Faith are supposed to make life better and more clear. And now Faith is really all Trent has left, but he'd really like to know why God gets all the love in the world.

It's quite possible that God and Faith are failing him, and in return he'd just really like to know why everyone looks up to him so much, when he does absolutely nothing to help anyone. Everyone worships God, but God's not helping Trent when he needs help the most.

He then in turn asks "why do you get all the love in the world?"

When he says "all the jagged edges disappear" etc etc. he's not comparing his life to when he thinks about God, he's comparing what Faith is supposed to be like, in the eyes of mortal man, but then leading it on that it isn't working out for him. Then it leads to the chorus.

This is obviously a song about things going from wrong to right. It's about being neglected. No one listens to him, so the words he speaks in his music, don't sound as good to him when he hears them in his songs, than when he thinks them up.

It's a song that clearly states "nobody knows how hurt I really am...nobody really gets it. what i'm saying nobody listens to, and nobody cares. it only matters to me in my mind. but when you're (she) near, my life gets better. but why do you get all the love in the world?"

He's giving her love...but maybe she's not giving it back? Maybe this song is totally dedicated to God. God and Faith are supposed to make life better. And now Faith is really all Trent has left, but he'd really like to know why God gets all the love in the world.

Nine Inch Nails – Love Is Not Enough Lyrics 19 years ago
The lyrics in this are so very wrong...

"We TRIED to forget"

"The TOWEL on the floor so cold it can sting."

"Well it hides in the dark, LIKE THE WITHERING VAIN."

"IT never really had a chance."

"I NEVER THINK I BELIEVED...I believed I could get better with you."

"For you TO go and take this and smash it apart."

"To wind up back at...I'M back at the start."

(this is a guess)

"HAVE you got anything left to show?"

The meaning behind this song...is so out there and the song jumps around so much that I just don't know. The begining line though, sounds like doing heroin. "The more that we take, the paler we get. I can't remember what it is, we tried to forget." People take heroin and or drugs, to get rid of their shitty life. The song might be about Trent going away from drugs, confiding in a female to make things better, that not working out, and him returning to drugs.

This song is about fearing that you might return to being the disgrace that you once were, or possibly ARE the disgrace that you once were. But a female of sorts, pulling you out of that fear or feeling. It's a song about using a relationship to make your life better.

Nine Inch Nails – You Know What You Are? Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a song about trying to believe the lies you tell, and trying to convince others that they're true.

Basically, trying to prove you love someone whom you really don't love or something like that.

verything goes great untill you make one wrong move, and expose how you truely do feel, then everything just gets fucked up in the end.

The female you're with tries to ignore the fact you don't love her, and pretends that it isn't true. But in the end...she "can't change anything."

The song during the chorus regresses and basically tells the non-loving person to get out of the other side, and get back to where they belong. Alone.

They're loveless.

This song is infact, about living a lie and it being exposed to someone who's using you, who tries not to believe it, and tries everything to change it, but can't.

Nine Inch Nails – Every Day Is Exactly the Same Lyrics 19 years ago
This IS THE BEST SONG ON THE CD!

The meaning kind of...speaks for itself. It's about living the same routine daily. Not having anything to live or die for. Nothing to hurt you, but nothing bring you up. It's pretty much about living with apathy, and not knowing how to cure it...pretty much about being emotionless and having nothing.

"I'm writing on a little piece of paper, that i'm hopeing someday you'll find. Well i'll hide it behind something, they wont look behind. I am still inside here, a little bit comes bleeding through. I wish this could've been any other way, but I just don't know, I don't know, what else I can do.."

This ENTIRE sequence sums up the song. He's writing his true feelings down. He's fighting the apathy he's forced upon himself, and letting a bit of love come bleeding through the brickwall-esque mentality he's been putting fourth for awhile. He's going to write this then hide it behind something people wont look behind. Obviously this is refering to his heart, because apathetic people are dubbed heartless. He then comes to say..he's still inside of his head, but he's let a bit of the honest feelings of love come bleeding through. He wishes life could be easier and any other way, but he doesn't know how to make that work.

The song is about living with apathy, and living a routine life no happiness and no sadness. Plain and simple.

Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is the sequel to Down in It.

Down in It was about falling into a hole created by being walked on by the supposed "love of your life."

Only is about pulling yourself out of that hole, and telling the bitch, "i'm not going to fucking put up with it anymore. There is no you, there is only me!"

VERY addictive song..didn't like it at first, but it grew on me.

BY THE WAY

Trent's saying,

"Love was a doorway trying to seal itself shut, but I climbed through."

The entire song is him ranting on and on to a bitch who fucked up his life, and him basically saying he's not gonna take it anymore. He felt he needed to be destroyed to heal, but now he feels otherwise and realizes she doesn't exist anymore. This is proven with,

"I just made you up, to hurt myself."

Possibly the best quote in the whole song.

This song is a bitch...and a good one. I love this song. It's great live.

Anyways...I think this song is about supposedly finding love, but in the end, being used for sex and mutual love not being returned.

Trent found a female he actually felt he loved with all his heart, a place he finally found to belong, but all she wanted was to have sex with him, and nothing more.

In the end, he feels he's sick of being used like this, and isn't coming back anymore. But his emotional attachment to her, won't let him leave her.

It's...pretty simple to figure out the meaning to this one. It's a very sexual song.

Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics 19 years ago
The correct lyrics are "You can Live in this Illusion, You can Choose to Believe. You keep Looking but you can't find the Words, Now you're Hiding in Retreat."

I believe that this song is about self-discovery, and possible recovery. You're coming to the realization that you're a horrible person, and asking yourself "what if" all of that shit that you love and live for was taken away, what then?

Would you find yourself afraid to know what that'd be like?

The song (to me) is about looking deep inside of your heart, and realizing that beyond the brick wall you make yourself out to be, you're extremely weak inside, and can't tell anyone about it.

"You keep looking but you can't find the words, now you're hiding in retreat."

He's saying that you're afraid to talk about what's really wrong, so now you live inside of your head to escape the realities of life. You make up a world inside of your head, where nothing bad happens.

It's about living a lie inside of your head, and asking yourself what would happen if you pulled yourself out of your happy-world inside of your head for a moment, and took a look at your true self. Would you be afraid to see what you really are?

What would happen if the falseness of the life you have built to make your life better, was taken away. Would you be afraid to to even think about that for even a moment?

I'll break this down for you all to prove my theory:

"See the animal in his cage that you built, are you sure what side your on?"

You're begining to see reality, and you for what you really are.

"Better not look him too closely in the eye, are you sure what side of the glass you are on?"

Trent's saying that you shouldn't study too much into yourself, or you'll really start to question who and what you really are, and what you do. It's kind of a warning to stay away from reality.

"See the safety of the life you have built, everything where it belongs."

You've based your entire life on apathy, living inside of your head, to escape the realities of your life. But you're happy that way.

"Feel the hollowness inside of your heart, and it's all, right where it belongs."

It's showing you that the apathy you've chosen to let consume you, has closed you off to love, and made your heart hollow and empty. But you're still happy like this, because it's what you chose to do. Hence "right where it belongs."

"What if everything around you, isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you think you know, is an elaborate dream?"

This is Trent basically SHOVING IT IN YOUR FACE that you've lived a lie to better your life. And kind of trying to pull you out of it.

"And if you look at your reflection, is that all you want to be? What if you could look right through the cracks, would you find yourself afraid to see?"

He's saying that if you really pulled yourself out of the falseness of your fake life for a moment, and took a look at your life, would you ask yourself is this what you really wanna do...do you want to be living a lie? Then asking what if you could choose to see the realities of life...would you find yourself frightened by it all?

"What if all the world's inside of your head, just creations of your own? Your devils and your Gods all the living and the dead, and you're really all alone."

He's once again, shoving it in your face that you're living a fake life inside of your head. Not taking reality for what it is, and showing you that in the end, by living this way, you're alone with nobody but yourself. And also saying that you yourself create all your faults, and uprisings, not the world around you. So why are you hiding from everyone and living life alone?

"You can live in this illusion, you can choose to believe. You keep looking but you can't find the words, now you're hiding in retreat."

Once again, this is basically stateing that you're afraid to talk about what's really wrong due to a lack of trust in just about everyone, so now you live inside of your head to escape the realities of life, and don't even bother to fix your life at all because without help, and encouragement that you believe doesn't exist, you just can't. You make up a world inside of your head, where nothing bad happens.

The chorus then repeats itself, with the same basic meaning.

This is (in major detail) what I think this song is about. Living inside of your head to escape the realities of life, but in the end, realizing the realities of life, and trying to hide from them in a continuous cycle that always leaves you faced with the truth in the end.

Bottom line...you can't hide from reality forever. In the end, it's always going to become aparent in your head, that you can't hide forever from life, even if it's shitty...you know you're living a lie, and sooner or later, that's going to become aparent, and trying to mask your life with lies won't work anymore, then you'll be left questioning yourself with this song.
