Genesis – Back in N.Y.C. Lyrics 19 years ago
Rael takes the time to justify his existance and the things hes done on this track. Sets the scene for his past with fighting, arson and rape on the list... lovely bloke. Thinking about the porcupine, i spect thats his conscience which he cant let go of poking a bit of guilt or sense into him and therefore bringing about the decision to shave his heart of its hair... perhaps a metaphor for his new found run in with emotions.

Genesis – Anyway Lyrics 19 years ago
gorgeously written thoughts before dying part of the lamb story. obviously he doesnt die but he seems to think at this point he's about to. being obscure as the story is its hard to pin individual phrases down as meaning anything on their own. the lamb story doesnt exactly revolve around logic.

Genesis – Alien Afternoon Lyrics 19 years ago
this ones quite tricky... at first it seems to be an abduction but i think its far more basic than the psychadelic bit at the front end would have you believe. I reckon this bloke moved away to revolve his life around all the shit that people do these days, work work work logic. Whatever it was that happened being something of a wake up call suddenly triggering him to realise the situation hes in and how he regrets ever having left behind the little things in life such as home and company.. i like ray wilson, shame all the phil and peter people didnt or genesis might still be writing.

Genesis – Anything She Does Lyrics 19 years ago
Yep it is definately about glamour models and the narrators thinking that he is in love with this particular pin up beauty. Lonely blokes can be forgiven for thinking that an unhealthy infatuation with a girl they could never have nor meet is love and i guess this is what the song aims to poke fun at. The acceptance at the end that she'll still be a young girl when hes old and grey i think is likely his admission that she is after all nothing more than an image which wont age as years pass unlike himself.

Genesis – Another Record Lyrics 19 years ago
Awww bless. You do see the occasional person that this song refers to. I think at the time of writing this song would refer to the Elvis type of rock and roller and this particular ones refusal to leave the past behind. These days you get to look out for leather and denim wearing balding-ponytailed blokes that would be the modern equivalent with one foot firmly left in the 80s. I think its nice but as the song seems to point out, if everyone else has moved on with the times, you suddenly end up in your own little world.

Genesis – Abacab Lyrics 19 years ago
I sat and read these lyric after having sung them for years anf not really listened to myself. Its a song about a bloke taking advantage of other people women (obviously) but I think perhaps its sung from the position of either someone looking on or perhaps more indirectly, his conscience. References to lookin around for things like cracks in mirrors and what have you suggest paranoia which could relate to the conscience thing. - I always thought that the 'dont you think that by now' part was singing 'dont you think they'll find out'... anyway, yeah i think its a paranoid song regarding someone thats leading taken women on without having the same feelings for them that they perhaps have for him. -Maybe thats only the meaning you take if you can impose your own life onto it? were that the case then... good song!

Marillion – After Me Lyrics 19 years ago
the girl bein spoken about in this song had a love for the singer which he seriously took for granted in the time they were together. she associated him therefore with mistakes and the dog. the dog references go very well to show how the singer was after the attentions of her but never chose to hang around. well its sung from his point of view after the realisation hes lost someone that special has sunk in altho' now bein too late to fix things. therefore he repays the favour she did naming things after him by optin to name hes dreams and ambitions after her... assuming he ever finds them. very much my song. sadly from the vocalists point of view. it can be very easy to be complacent.

Genesis – One For The Vine Lyrics 19 years ago
amazing song. why hasnt anyone spoken about it!? its highly profound and clever in its story telling. the jist of it is that one man is commanding many men to fight for a cause that nobody is really sure of. his self belief tho' is enough that the people will fight his cause. all but one who flees from it as his hope is lost. he falls into a parallel world only into a different role. suddenly people want to place thei misguided faith in him to battle for their freedom taking his arrival from nowhere as 'a sign'. well altho' dubious he feels that he should fight their cause and therefore leads them into battle only to see himself losing hope and fleeing from the battle behind him! the story is an eternal loop. its brilliant andgives u a lot to think about. theres a void of difference between havin the belief of people restin on ur shoulders and having to believe someone against your better judgement but it also shows just how easily these roles can be reversed and the outcomes of such a turnaround. brilliant.

Genesis – Guide Vocal Lyrics 19 years ago
this goes with duchess i think but is less about the singer ad more about someone or something else... now, the person talking here could be an actually muse figure to the singer who has gone outta their way to help them on their way. the fact nobody would understand if they knew about it is interesting tho' suggestin that this figure isnt real... if i had to go out on a limb id say its likely this muse was a conscience of the singers. perhaps the voices inside telling her what to do and it eventually being ignored as the lure of fame and fortune caused the duchess to forget her original reasons for performing. -followed by a rise and fall in this persons career as written in duchess.

Genesis – No Son Of Mine Lyrics 19 years ago
yeah i think its a safer bet to go with the second opinion here. theres nothing to say this father figures hand was raised against anyone but the mother. i agree entirely with the rest of the song bein the need to find out whether things had changed due to the son leavin and this bein proved right by the father not accepting the childs existance on his return. i guess the father figure was blind to the reasons for him son leaving instead taking it only to be a sign that the child didnt respect the family enough to be part of it anymore. good video for this one.

Genesis – Man On The Corner Lyrics 19 years ago
that was badly written but it mean to say that we 'are not' him or like him. we apparently all long to be but cannot find it within ourselves to be.

Genesis – Man On The Corner Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this suggests that we are the lonely man than it does suggest we should be. the wording of the song points to the fact the man on the corner is quite contented with his situation, its only those looking on at him that dont understand his reason for it. the world goes on around him with all the nastiness we take as bein part of it but this does not apply to him and therefore we should i think be envious of his lack of worries.

Genesis – Broadway Melody Of 1974 Lyrics 19 years ago
Good this... I dunno how historically accurate it is but its pretty much a bit of scene setting for the lamb to bring up some of the sights sounds and people that would have applied to new york at the time. its sinister undertone is evident thru'out leading you to half expect the unearthly happenins which follow it in the story

Genesis – Alone Tonight Lyrics 19 years ago
Its obviously a song about bein lonely and pleading with a loved or lost one to help them through it altho' not literally since they've long gone.

Genesis – Paperlate Lyrics 19 years ago
paperlate is a term phil took from dancing with the moonlit knight... he randomly started singing that while improvising and it stuck. -its actually what the evening newspaper sellers used to shout in london which is why it was used in the original song anyway. the song is just about taking or not taking risks in life. nothing very deep rooted so its most likely a rhyme based thing.

Genesis – More Fool Me Lyrics 19 years ago
this seems to be a breakup with someone cause mainly by her never bein wrong and knowing she had a certain degree of control over things. he doesnt seem to believe she loved him anyway and has resided himself to a bit of self pity which is fair enough. poor old phil. -one of his first outtings on the vocals too... its nice in a high pitched way.

Genesis – Ripples Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song describes how he had found his true love, gotten complacent and lost her. 'bluegirls' i figure must be a term for such a person as he found, her face looking strange perhaps being his accidental oversight which led to her leaving espcially with the reference to an 'hour' twice. seems something short term caused it. needless to say the song poetically explains that once the action started there was no stopping it or indeed gettin her back despite struggling to find a way.

to quoye the man himself 'its a song about living with someone that turns out to be a pain in the arse' - think most of us can relate to that which is why its so good.

Genesis – Many Too Many Lyrics 19 years ago
this is steve hacketts leaving present. the many too many refernce perhaps referin to other guitarists who had been in his position and left previously like anthony phillips. the part about bein locked up i guess is about his frustration at bein left out of the musical process more and more as time passed. he ended up with less imput in the group bein left with short solo's towards the end of his run. -not sure about the use of mama in this song. the jist remains that he was unhappy bein in the band. i read somewhere that hackett actually did say goodbye on a corner to phil shortly before bein due to play... sad really, i liked hacketts parts. good solo run after tho'! he's always re-using genesis stuff like blood on the rooftops and los endos.

Genesis – Follow You Follow Me Lyrics 19 years ago
this is the song that moved genesis from obscure progrock band geeky men liked into bein a household name and gettin women interested in them (apparently). it was part of a longer song which ultimately just lent itself to bein a 3 minute one. as such it was easily stuck on the radio where it took off. blatantly one of phils. the other two were still too shy to say things like 'i love you' at this point in time (78) altho' i spose banks had almost managed it in afterglow. bless him.

Genesis – The Musical Box Lyrics 19 years ago
i cant believe nobody has commented on this. altho' the story behind it is explained in the text which preceeds it, its hard to deny that the musical box is one of the most monumental pieces of music ever written. as much so as bohemian rhapsody in my opinion. the story is largely pandora's box with the old english old king cole rhyme slipped into it.. im not sure whether the whole pretext is from a real story, be interesting to find out tho'. never has a song about a mans lust been so profoundly excecuted...

Genesis – Uncertain Weather Lyrics 19 years ago
nobody commented on this?! -this song is what genesis would have become if the radio had have played them but bein an old band they were largely ignored by the media. ray wilson was an amazing vocalist and as banks and rutherford were still knocking out good music things... its always the same its just a shame thats all :) but yeah- a poignient song trying to unravel the story behind an unknown soldier, pondering his existence and his disappearence from it long ago.

Genesis – Jesus He Knows Me Lyrics 19 years ago
had to be a bit careful playing this one in the states... they can be a bit protective of their con-artist evangelists. apparently the band couldnt turn a tv on without someone preachin their need to build a theme park in the lords name so its little wonder a song came from it.

Genesis – Harold The Barrel Lyrics 19 years ago
theres nothing you can say about this other than what it tells you itself by bein a story/play. not the humour in the lines 'he cant last long, he hasnt got a leg to stand on'... -well no, hes cut off his toes! anyway yeah, it is what it is and its likely that its based on something that someone read in the newspaper. incidentally, 'bognor' is an english seaside town...

Genesis – Afterglow Lyrics 19 years ago
i remember banks saying how this song was about bein the last man left alive after neuclear fallout or whatever... whatever the reasons the whole worlds good as gone and hes nothing left, therefore offerin his soul to the person he loves, pressumably before joinin everyone else in shuffling off the mortal coil. strange for him to write a love song so its quite a rare little monkey nut really.

Genesis – Keep It Dark Lyrics 19 years ago
apparently this ones about a bloke bein abducted by aliens, shown a world much better than the one we all inhabit and so on bein dropped off back at home opted to lie about hwat had happened rather than be locked up for telling the truth of his experience... surpression of your own freedom of speech song i spose regardin how the world perhaps isnt ready to know what a mess its in just yet.

Genesis – Home By The Sea Lyrics 19 years ago
altho the mentalist explanations well grounded i seem to remember phil introducing it at concerts as bein a song about 'ghosts and things that go bump in the night' -which is is... besides, it appears the bloke is a thief thats crept into this house rather than having been locked up...

Genesis – In The Cage Lyrics 19 years ago
all references to the rael story throught the lamb, easiest explained (altho not in any logical way) through the story on the album sleeve. just to add something tho... while this is definately brilliant in every way, its unfair to claim peter gabriels era in anyway better to phils or even ray wilsons. a band is a band, people move about. -if u like peter u follow him etc. if i werent for the conversion over time to a more public friendly kind of music then 1987s wembley gig and the ultimate worldwide fame genesis found wouldnt've happened. anyway, by 1974 gabriel had started to dominate the band when it was always banks and rutherfords baby. if he hadnt have left then the next album would have been terrible as the members started to hate the man. u have to learn to enjoy all the songs based on what they are, not what u think they coulda been if other people were involved. there is no sense in that.

Genesis – Undertow Lyrics 19 years ago
a plea to someone that has seemingly been told that they're coming to the end of their life, telling them not to give up living. the mid part of the song suggests that whtever is goin to kill the person involved hasnt done it quickly and that they really should carry on living as tho' they didnt know their time were running out. infact it could even be a case of hypochondria whereby the person isnt ill at all but had resided themself to bein on the decent toward oblivion for the sake of it... i think its more likely just telling people not to let their situation stop them living every day to the fullest and to fight back against the innevitable.

Genesis – Snowbound Lyrics 19 years ago
haha the drug reasoning is quite often quoted but its apparently a song about freezing to death. its almost hallucinogenically described thru the song so it could easily be about cocain... until u remember that the lyrics r by genesis. generally more into myth than missuse. still, ya never know. the freezing to death idea to me is so beautifully morbid that it adds something more to the song

Genesis – Dancing With The Moonlit Knight Lyrics 19 years ago
its very very clever this song. its basically an epitaph to british culture as large companies destroy its heritage. i will go thru it bit by bit but i havent taken a majority of what i say from anything but its what i take from it. - the first stanza i take to be the gambling of culture on the 'maybe' of development. the queen of maybe as its written, the 'unifaun'... well a faun is a creature much like the horns and tails thing in a trick of the tail altho' quite a few years prior to. old father thames drowing is blatantly in reference to londons famous river, the symobolic drowning bein a death of london as it was. the next stanze is more specific. 'its the time of ur life' points out how easily led people are by what they're told and 'wimpey dreams' refers to wimpey restaurants which at the time were takin over the food market with chain outlets. worth noting that they were an american company i think and therefore the song is almost anti american... followin stanza is a bit of a rant about people making their own messes based on what they're told to think.. -'green shield stamps' were the 70s equivalent to reward points at petrol stations or whatever - this points to comercialism. the verse about the fat old lady is a dig at those who willingly throw away their money, i presume to company director with their lying money grabbing ways. 'credit cards' is another modern day introduction of the times. -this song is closely linked to cinema show and aisle of plenty which continue the same theme to close the album.

Genesis – Domino Lyrics 19 years ago
anyone that does remember phils 'domino principal' audience participation stuff from 1987 will probably know word for word the whole 'something happens to the people at the front which effects this which effects that which effect this which effects the people at the back'... but yeah its pretty much just the knock on effects of someone actions. in the songs literal sense its a realisation by the narrator that everyone is oblivious to the fact what they see happening and think nothing of is gonna somehow effect them in the end.

Genesis – Mama Lyrics 19 years ago
ya know i read once that various people claimed this song to be from the point of view of an unborn child tryin to stop its mum aborting it.. obviously thats a bit far fetched compared to the 'falling for a prostitute' meaning which i think they said was correct... interestin tho'... anyone realise that phil took the famously evil laugh in that song from some old rap song he heard?
