When she says, "I guess you'd better go and get your armour," it gives me chills. I don't listen to anything in the top 40 but the first two words of that line choke me up slightly, they sound so resigned and tired of the whole battle. I think this is about both people in a relationship fighting for the upper hand - sometimes it seems like the best option because you're less likely to get hurt that way, but there shouldn't be an upper hand in love: it should just work. |

I don's post this kind of thing very often but this is just the story of my life right now and I'm pretty sure I understand what this song is all about. Put simply, it's telling the tale of a guy who's involved with a girl that he feels attraction to but isn't in love with. He doesn't feel as strongly for her as she feels for him - or at least as she used to. He starts by making promises and being the better person; he says if she needs him to move away in order to forget him then he'll do it, he says he'll cut himself off from her entirely if that helps. The chorus is fairly self-evident in its meaning. But then, in the stanza that begins, "It's cold as a tomb..." it's them spending another night together, probably drunk or lonely, and it's him pleading beneath the surface to himself to 'call it quits or get a grip.' He knows he's hurting her, and knows he needs to sort his head out and stop being so careless with her emotions, but he's incapable. In the long bridge section it's him falling back into a long list of platitudes about how much she matters to him, but the point is that she doesn't; she's just a painkiller, if you like, and he's using her for that. That's what I read into it, anyway, because it's pretty much spot on as far as my life is concerned. My ex and I broke up a year ago and we've kissed often on nights out; at first, she would shout at me after it had happened and tell me I needed to think more carefully about what I was doing and fucking with her emotions. And she was right. But it didn't fix anything; when we're drunk and around each other we still end up kissing and/or sleeping together and it's nothing I'm proud of but I'm almost powerless to stop it. Almost. And the part of me that does have that capability is muted by my insecurities. I know she'll forgive me eventually for being so messed up and in turn messing her up, but I'd much rather she was just able to walk away from me, because even though that would hurt me for a while, it's almost certainly the best thing for her own head. |

Quite possibly the best thing they've ever done. It's about finding an escape from teenage life (lightbody said he wrote it about his youth) through things you'll never remember the following morning, through that explosion of letting go and pressing the disaster button. There's some imagery I don't understand yet but this song is INCREDIBLE. |

This song is the tunnel with no light at the end, and Thom hates it when he looks into the crowd at concerts and sees people singing along with smiles on their faces, but to me, that's not the way that things should be. Cause every person in that room knows the song is true. It's inescapable; sometimes life just throws things in your way that you can't get round, sometimes things just don't work out and everything gets completely lost, and sometimes people give up on all hope entirely, and that danger, that fear is always there and always will be. But despite how hopeless and pointless all that seems, if you can stand in a crowd of a thousand people that all know it's true, doesn't that make you feel a whole lot better, knowing that you're part of this battle and you're not alone? Knowing that you've got something in common with all these people, doesn't that just turn a couple of the tears you're crying into hopeful ones? I know it did for me. It's sad, but when he says there's no saving grace, no redemption in it, he's wrong, because there's redemption in all music. If you can relate, then you're not on your own, and I think that matters a hell of a lot. |

Basically, ieatworld, the rage and everything is because the meaning of the song is SO blatant there's no reason to discuss it - "You are my signal fire" - he's done something wrong, probably to her, but even still she guides him - simple as. There is none of the complexity or beauty of Grazed Knees or Run, none of the ambiguity of Headlights and none of the hard-hitting amazement of You Could Be Happy. The lyrics are BAD. |
