Jimmy Eat World – Sweetness Lyrics 17 years ago
I just wanted to say fuck all of you who claim that it's shallow to decipher these lyrics as an implication of drug use. That in itself is just shallow. A) Given the context of the song it's a logical assumption. B) If not a single song in your top twenty five favorites infers some sort of drug use you listen absolutely shitty music and you have no place speaking in this or any other forum.

So many of the world changing musicians ever to pick up an instrument have expressed themselves and drug use as part of their art. Like it or not it's a fundemental part of musical culture. You cannot condemn our peers on this site for that. Don't be so fucking ignorant. They unlike you are actually being realists.

So beautiful. Maybe the best song ever written. And the title is so appropriate to the feel of the song. The violin part in particular is so bittersweet.

Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark Lyrics 17 years ago
So I agree with the majority of the posts but I thought I'd just add a little something for thought. I have an acoustic cover of this song done by Pete Yorn. (I think that version is even better, but I am partial to Pete Yorn) Anyway, at the end of the song Pete sings "I was dancing when I was 12. I was dancing when I was 12" Does anyone think that has a connection to the original song or is that just something personal Pete added? It wouldn't surprise me if it was personal just to Pete because he often sings about his childhood. What do you guys think?

The Libertines – What Became Of The Likely Lads Lyrics 17 years ago
I apologize if someone already mentioned this but the version of the song I have has at least a couple lines different than the one listed above.

Instead of:

"They sold the rights to all the wrongs
And when they knew you'd give me songs
Welcome back, I said "

It goes:

"They sold my rights to all my wrongs and then they needed their (or maybe "the") new songs. Welcome back, I sang." (it's possible that he says 'said' not "sang" but I dont think so).

Other than the two things that I noted I'm 99% positive what I wrote is the correct lyrics in the version I have. Regardless, the lyrics are different in the version I have as opposed to the one listed.

I don't know if it matters to anyone, I just thought I'd throw it out there.

The Verve Pipe – The Freshmen Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is amazing, especially acoustic, its one of my top 5 favs of all time. I agree with the base premise everyone seems to know anyway: 2 guys used a girl so much it drove her to suicide. But i think it's important to see the even deeper meaning. He wrote this song in my opinion to free him of the guilt he held onto for so long. So i feel the deeper meaning of the song is we all have to take accountability for our actions at some point, rationalizing our mistakes won't stop guilt from eating us alive. While in some parts of the song blame is admitted many parts of the song deflect the blame for the girls death back to her. But he words it in a way that allows you to know that deep down he truly understands this is at least partially his doing. For example:

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannont believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

So thats my long winded take on the song

Dashboard Confessional – Don't Wait Lyrics 18 years ago
I downloaded all of dusk and summer the day it came out, and I gotta say, it's DC's worst album yet. And really it's not all that bad, it's just when you produce music at the level chris does it's hard to keep coming out with a better and better product. I know that doesnt really explain this particular song but most of you havent explained it either so I just thought I'd chime in.

American Hi-Fi – Flavor Of The Weak Lyrics 18 years ago
Just to settle the argument, because it's one that should extend to pages, it is nintendo. Think about it:

It's Friday night and she's all alone
He's a million miles away
She's just dressed to kill
THE TV'S ON
HE's CONNECTED TO THE SOUNDS.

He's talking about the girls boyfriend sitting and playing nintendo even though she's come over to his house looking absolutely beautiful. So let that settle the score and everyone just shut up about it. Sorry to be rude, it's just this is a good song (great acoustic) and arguing over that is just sort of diminshing it.

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my take:

"step one, you say 'we need to talk'
he walks, you say 'sit down, it's just a talk'

He feels the first thing he needs to do to help his friend is to tell him "we need to talk". And reassure him that everything is going to be ok because after all "it's just a talk"

"he smiles politely back at you
you stare politely right on through
some sort of window to your right
as he goes left and you stay right
between the lines of fear and blame
you begin to wonder why you came"

The friend the storyteller is confronting seems to know what the talk is about so he tries to stay calm by "smiling politely" But the storyteller cant bare to look his friend in the eye so he "stares right on through the window" The window could symbolize literally a window the storyteller is looking at to avoid eye contact with his friend because he is "fearful" of what his friend will think of what he has to say (and fearful for his friends life), especially if his friend is not willing to take the "blame" for his actions. And if his friend wont listen to him it's all just a waste of time and he'll "wonder why he came". Referring back to the window, he could also be speaking figuratively, thinking of this as his window of oppurtunity to help his friend.

"where did i go wrong?
i lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness
and i would have stayed up with you all night
had i known how to save a life"

He's asking himself "where did I go wrong"? How come I couldn’t reach my friend? And possibly feeling guilty for the "bitterness" he feels toward his friend because his friend hasn’t changed his ways (possibly that bitterness pushed his friend away, making him even harder to reach)
And the next part could mean two different things. The more symbolic: "staying up all night" would mean spending a lot of time trying to "save a life" "had he known how" by being there for his friend if he only knew how to help him straighten out his life. Or "staying up all night" could literally mean staying up all night while his friend was going through withdraw from the drugs he was taking and "had he know how to save a life" would then mean if he knew staying up all night with him to help him through his withdraw was what he needed to save his life, he would have done that. (Sorry if none of that made sense, it made more sense in my head)

"let him know that you know best
'cause after all, you do know best”

He wants his friend to know that he knows what is best for him hence "let him know that you know best".

“try to slip passed his defense
without granting innocence”

He also wants to " try to slip passed his defense" meaning he wants to be gentle enough to were his friend will let down his guard and listen to him but he doesnt want to "grant innocence" meaning not letting his friend believe that his actions weren’t wrong. So basically find a balance between sensitivity and sternness when he is confronting his friend.

“lay down a list of what is wrong
things you told him all along”

Once he has accomplished that he wants to "lay down a list of what is wrong, things he told him all along" In other words, once his friend is listening he's going to try to tell him all the things that he has done wrong, like he's attempted to in the passed.

“pray to god he hears you
and pray to god he hears you"

The storyteller then realizes all you can do after that is "pray to god he hears you"

"as he begins to raise his voice
you lower yours and grant him one last choice"

His friend get angry because of the things he is telling him, but he stays calm and lays it on the line.

"drive until you lose the road
or break with the ones you've followed"

He tells his friend that he can drive himself to his end or choose a better path to follow.

"he will do one of two things
he will admit to everything
or he'll say he's just not the same"

His friend will either admit to his wrong doing or he’ll just say he’s not the same person that he used to be and that he can’t change who he currently is.

“and you'll begin to wonder why you came”

And obviously if his friend chooses not to change “you’ll begin to wonder why you came” because it was a unsuccessful attempt to help his friend.

That's just my take.

O.A.R. – Love and Memories Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm not entirely sure what this song is about other than the fact he's talking about a past love and how it seemed so go but she ruined it all. However, I agree that this doesn't sound like the typical studio sound of OAR (maybe with the exception of "King of The Thing". In concert, Marc Roberege's voice is less rugged and scratchy and more fluid. Much like this song. Given that, I'm assuming that either none of you have seen them in concert or that you just havent taken that into account.

And this I know fo shooo..
Uh, But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me

Don't try to fight the feelin'
Because the thought alone is killing me right nooww.."

Those are fucking sweet lyrics. Outkast is awesome, they're totally original, nothing like the stupid shit that other rappers try to do. By the way, "DEADLWOMBAT". You're a complete idiot you homophobic fuck. And I find interesting that the word wombat is an acronym for Waste Of Money, Brains, And Time because that describes you perfectly. Wow, you're slut of a mother must really be ashamed to have pushed your useless ass out of that loose vagina of hers.

Weezer – Island In The Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
Maybe there's a double meaning to this song, but I interpret as being about doing drugs. Now this idea maybe a little shaky, but I think the guy in the song sees his that his love interest does drugs and he wants to feel the same thing she does.

These are a couple things that led me to believe this:

"When you're on a holiday
You can't find the words to say
All the things that come to you
And I want to feel it too"

My interpretation: Getting high is commonly refered to as "holiday" and when you're high you often have a hard time completing coherent sentences and saying whats on your mind. "and I want to feel it to" Refers to the fact that the guy wants to feel the high his love interest feels.

"On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain"

my interpretation: "island in the sun" could mean the place where he feels like he is when he's high. "It makes me feel so fine" refers to the fact that he has fun when he's high. "I can't control my brain" means he cant control his brain because he's so stoned.

"When you're on a golden sea
You don't need no memory
Just a place to call your own
As we drift into the zone"

my interpretation: He has no worries about anything when he's drifting into the zone (doing drugs)

That's my read on the song, what do you guys think about that take?
