Joni Mitchell – Big Yellow Taxi Lyrics

Isn't 'Old Man' a term for fathers? The 'Big Yellow Taxi' is a reference to the Bus that picked up soldiers destined for Vietnam from collection points. Also isnt the pink hotel a euphimism for a brothel? Maybe thats just where I am.
The interpretation of the loss of the environment in the name of commerce I totally agree with |

This is probably the wrong crowd to say this too, but Johnny Cash did a great cover of this in 2002.
To me the song is simply about people who have been idolised, for one reason ar another, by society to the point they become god figures. I dont really think its about religion.
Ive never had a chance to hear the original, but I think this version has a excellent sound |

Counting Crows – Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell cover) Lyrics

I think this song lost a lot of its meaning when covered by Counting Crows. For instance, the Pink hotel is a reference to a brothel.
What really annoyed me was where they replaced "Took away my old man" with "Took my girl away". The big yellow taxi is supposed to be the yellow bus that soldiers on thier way to Vietnam had to board, now its just some guy talking about his girlfriend. The true concern about the environmental impact of development is somewhat lost in the new context. While this is an ok songnoone ever did it better then Joni Mitchell |

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where the Wild Roses Grow (feat. Kylie Minogue) Lyrics

I always thought the line was "When light as a thief, I kissed her goodbye, and said" etc. "The wind" fits much better.
This song does have a very gaelic ballad feel to it, and no matter how many times I listen to it I'm always sort of taken by surprise when it goes from romantic mush about kissing and she is the one to him being above her about to brain her with a rock.
This song is very beautiful, I think the darkness of it makes it far better, this song couldnt have been as emotive if it wasnt a murder ballad |

I disagree. If you read the lyrics you see the tasks themselves are impossible. sickles need to be metal, and you cannot make a shirt without any stitches or seams. This songs meaning is more clear with the original lines from the old folk song, which adds in the last verse that if the poor lover will simply say that he/she will *attmept* these tasks, thats all the singer needs for complete assurance. |

Andrew Lloyd Webber – Gethsemane (I Only Want To Say) Lyrics

I think this song captures the absolute frustration Jesus is feeling at the time. It is expressive and is one of the few depictions of Christ in any form that really depicts him as a human with an unrelenting burden, not some ever calm, ever righteous perfect demigod.
Almost converted me......almost |

This song is beautiful. One of the very few love songs that never becomes corny or cheap. I read somewhere that it was Andrews love song to Sarah Brightman, the original Christine and his wife either at the time or soon after. |

Sorry, It was Carl Anderson. Simon Lewis was the fat idiot who kept missing notes. Though i probably just dont like him because he didnt measure up to anderson when i saw JCS preformed a few years ago.

I think at heart, Jesus Christ superstar is more about the story from Judas' view than a retelling of the crucifixion. I think that by far the best version was a movie done of this rock opera that was made in 1973, its got ecxellent symbollism as well as brilliant preformers. The man playing Judas for instance, Simon Lewis, was in my opinion the best one, and no one has been able to match him yet. |

This was one of the first songs that protested or even dealt with racism in america. Its about the lynchings in the south. I think that was extremely brave of her given racism was still very much apart of the world. One of the reasons she's my hero |

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Song of Joy Lyrics

The singer is the killer, thats what makes the song so scary. He says the killer quotes John Milton on the walls, the singer claiming that the cops told him this, yet he himself quotes paradise lost: "Farewell happy fields Where joy forever dwells ".
The last part is what freaked me out the most when I first heard it. No matter how often I've heard it since, its still good for a chill. |

This song is brilliant. I agree, the fact that it is a man singing from the point of veiw of a 15 yr old serial killer is hysterical. Its cheerful tune and the incredibly funny lyrics really cheer me up.
"Oh, fuck it! I'm a monster! I admit it!", This is the best line to sing along with. |
