Actually the female vocals on those two songs are provided by Nina Barnes (Kevin's wife/girlfriend).
CCAA is bothering me too! A bunch of people from the Elephant 6 message boards started bugging the band about the meaning after their shows, and Kevin has said that he promised the originator that he would never disclose the meaning. And now from what you said, its like they're teasing us with these CCAA signs and hoodies too. Ahh =p |

I don't think this has been mentioned yet...
But since "fauna" [from the album title Hissing Fauna] means in one sense "The species of animals that existed in a certain period of time in a certain place"... it fits perfectly with the title "The Past is a Grotesque Animal".
Also, its a mythological name, which fits in with the lyric of this song "Sometimes I wonder if you're mythologizing me like I do you".

I agree with toadknickers. This is what I thought also as I started to think about the concept of the album. Hissing Fauna starts with a Sunlandic Twins-like song "Suffer For Fashion", and then Kevin's depression/anxiety starts to manifest in "Sink the Siene" and then especially in this song.
I think that "Cato" is either a metaphor for something inside of him.
Less literally though, this song could definitley double as a "two friends drifting apart" tale. |

I feel that Devo is mocking the idea that love has to necessarily be filled with bouts of anger and that it must be desired this way and must be seen as natural. The anger and frustration in the love depicted here is the result of socially constructed pressures that are put on interpersonal relationships. The young man in the song steps outside of this frame of mind, sees that the "love" that he is experiencing isn't consistent with what he naturally desires, and decides to just give up on it altogether. |

This song to me illustrates a vague emotion of helplessness that occurs when you feel that things aren't going your way mentally and causes you to feel that things aren't working in your favor. The fact that Nick Hexum creates this mood through his lyrics is beautiful, and is enough to uplift you in the sense that you aren't alone in feeling such a way.
After expressing the emotions in a more solemn way, the song turns completely around and illustrates the same ideas, but with a more positive beat. This signifies that you can easily change your perception of these ideas into something positive. At the same time, other lyrics such as "What makes me act the way I do? Why Am I asking you" describes how you should mold the positivity into what suits you the best, as no one is the same, no one has the exact same thought process. So it isnt clear cut, but its possible. |

More literally, I think this song was written by Nick Hexum after looking back on an old song or lyric that he had sung. He appears to feel much differently about something that he had once said in a song, and feels embarassed that he would have ever said anything like that. Though he never makes a reference to what it may be. |
