They Might Be Giants – Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
"by Brother_Dave on 10-20-2004 @ 04:30:08 AM
Are you high? Both Johns have said MULTIPLE TIMES that virtually none of their songs have any meaning. And yes, they've actually said which ones too. This is not one of them."

You're pretty naive if you take that at face value.

Led Zeppelin – Hey Hey What Can I Do Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, she's not a hooker; she just sleeps around on him. "Street corner girl" and "midnight shift" are meant as insults towards her; he's not saying she's an actual hooker.

"In the bars, with the men who play guitars/Singin', drinkin' and rememberin' the times" means she goes out and has a good time with other guys.

In the 2nd verse, the words are actually "Don't say they come to pray to the lord, not when my little girl looks so fine."

That verse is figurative—it's not about actually going to church, but about how she acts innocent when she's with him. He sees all the attention she gets from other guys, and she acts like they're just being friendly, but he doesn't buy it.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – A Jackknife to a Swan Lyrics 19 years ago
Anyone know anything about the true story behind this song? Just curious. Dickie said in an interview that it's based on real events that took place in Boston.

Rush – Freewill Lyrics 19 years ago
..."Fucking stupid song.

...We don't have free will.
...We're the conglomerates of genetics and upbringing; perceptual
...entities in an epistemologically ambiguous physical Universe."

I'm guessing you didn't do very well on that week's vocabulary quiz. You pretty much said one thing, and then said the complete opposite.

Anyway, good song.

Just the opposite, I think.

The Presidents of the United States of America – Not Gonna Make It Lyrics 19 years ago
They're mocking the people who told them they wouldn't make it.

They intentionally sound like a really bad band by messing up the beginning and starting over, and then missing lines (the correct lyrics are "drummers who can drum," only one of them says "singers").

The only line in the song that rhymes is the one about not knowing how to rhyme. They're saying how ridiculous the criticism sounds.

I think he's saying that he's mad.

The Presidents of the United States of America – Christmas Piglet Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about a piglet that's in the snow, and you'd think it would be cold, cause piglets don't have fur.

The Who – Behind Blue Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
Pete Townshend is not a pedophile.

He was investigated and declared to be completely innocent, and all charges were dropped.

Get your facts straight.

Pink Floyd – Brain Damage Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about being labeled as insane for being different, and then being driven insane by being forced to conform.

.....The lunatic is on the grass
.....The lunatic is on the grass
.....remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
.....got to keep the loonies on the path

He spent his childhood (games), grew up (daisy chains, meaning series of connected experiences), and found happiness (laughs) in his own way (on the grass). But since he is different, he's considered insane and is forced to live by the rest of society's standards (on the path).

.....The lunatic is in the hall
.....the lunatics are in the hall
.....the paper holds their folded faces to the floor
.....and every day the paper boy brings more

Folded faces = the people on the front page of the newspaper. He is examined and ostracized for being different.

.....The lunatic is in my head
.....The lunatic is in my head
.....you raise the blade, you make the change
.....you rearrange me 'till I'm sane

The lunatic is in my head = His way of thinking is considered crazy. Doctors treat him (or tool with him—"raise the blade, make the change" as in, for example, adjusting a table saw to do wood work) until he is thinking the way society wants him to.

.....you lock the door
.....and throw away the key
.....there's someone in my head but it's not me

They have succeeded in changing him. He knows the person he has become is not his true self, but they force this upon him anyway, literally driving him out of his mind.

I think the meaning of "dark side of the moon" is found in Eclipse. Everything under the sun is in tune (everything you do goes together to make up who you are), but the sun is eclipsed by the moon (you can be completely separated from who you are). When the sun is eclipsed by the moon, the Earth is on the dark side of the moon.

So when he says:

.....And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
.....and if there is no room upon the hill
.....and if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
.....I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

and:

.....And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
.....you shout and no one seems to hear
.....and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
.....I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

I think he's basically saying "when you can't take it anymore and finally lose it, I'll see you there; they got me too."
