Of course it's a dialogue, they use quotation marks in the lyrics. its not shown on this site though.. there's also stage directions and shit. like at the start it says something like (service station carpark. girl refuses to get into her boyfriends car.) and before the "so rub it in.." bit it says that shes in the car but her thoughts are audible, shit like that. |

i agree. its like shes trying to hold on when the other person may not be too interested. i love the way liz writes, so it seems like nonsense but is so insightful. |

hey chillerthanmost, was there any point to that at all? the entire point of this website is for people to share their own meanings and interpretations of music that they personally connect to. nah shit the meaning of any songis subjective, thats why this site works, because there are so many different ways of looking at something. Its all about context, so yes, what tim kasher was thinking when he wrote the song does come into play, but you are quite right in saying it is also what you bring to the song. I suggest you stop bitching about other people trying to offer their insight. They're not telling you their opinion is law, just offereing it. And dont presume to think that just because you dont agree with people that they aren't talented. Close-minded prick. |

Yeah he is. and of course he shows up all the time in saddle creek bands, he's like the producer or something, he's basically in charge of saddle creek. i spoke to him for a bit when conor was touring with REM in australia, nice bloke. |

i think that the butchers knife thing could be talking about the song itself, or collectively the entire works of the artist; that the butcher is an expresison of Tim's inner hate or depression or whatever you wnat to call it, the resentment he expresses earlier in the song in regard to what he writes. So the butcher's knife could be his way of destroying the songs as such, the ugly extremety being his art, his music. This is a very ambiguous song though, which is kind of the point; you bring your own context and understanding to it, therefore your own meaning. |

i think both views are probably right, because having sex with someone when the relatioship is going nowhere is pretty much a refutation of cathoclicism is it not? but u cant restrict it to not being about catholicism at all, especially not with lyrics like "now that God is an atheist i can sleep at nigh" (my favorite line). I think its about the chick he had sex with has shown him the light so to speak, convincing him of all the errors with the religion, so now he feels better about sinning and stuff |

i think that its about life in general, metaphorical and s**t. like, you do what you want in life, and you may get hurt but enjoy it, and never let that stop you. |
