For me, this is about being young and discontent, growing old and being discontent. Throughout life you take down your "elephants" one by one (to paraphrase). For me, this song is heavy with disillusionment and disenchantment with friendships, relationships and dreams. Is there something better out there if you abandon what people expect from you? The first time I head this song, I liked it, but didn't give it much thought. Then as I kept listing to it and picking up the little nuances. Ever notice how the paino sounds vaguely like a heart monitor? Brilliant. Gibbard’s words are so wonderful that I can see it all playing out in my head as I listen to it. And I get tears in my eyes. |
