Can anyone decipher the parts with the question marks? Everyone's singing mixes together. Still great song...

Sufjan Stevens – For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti Lyrics 18 years ago
I think he says "Even If I come back, Even If I die" is the most powerful part of the song, because Jesus is saying, "I'll do anything for you, even die and come back and still people will reject me."

Still I must obey - Obey the Father God and die on the cross
Still I must invite - Invite people to believe in me and accept Christianity

The Mountain Goats – Love Love Love Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is very meaningful to me and I actually wrote an essay on it. It basically boils down to the song being about fate, and about how even in the horrible things that happen there is a force of love in the world, whatever we believe that force to be. It also gives the hope that someday we'll understand what this force is and know why we went through those hard times on earth.

The whole breakdown of the song and its meaning is posted at my blog here - http://musicforants.blogspot.com/2006/01/mountain-goats-love-love-love.html

Mae – Embers and Envelopes Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about breaking up with someone and the forgiving them and getting back together. The Embers represent burning bridges of your relationship down. The Envelopes represent forviness and reconciliation (apparently they reconciled thru letters). Pretty obvious meaning to me, but i guess I'm the first one to get it on here.

Death Cab for Cutie – The Sound of Settling Lyrics 19 years ago
and i'll sit and wonder
of every love that could've been
if i'd only thought of something charming to say.

this describes the song for me, theres so many times where you think of something great to say to a girl only after you had your chance.

U2 – Miracle Drug Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song is all about mixing faith and science, which is a very interesting thing to do in today's society, where most scientist would disreguard anything they can not test in the empirical world. Bono is saying that God works through science to perform miracles and with perfect love (from God) anything is possible.

The Exodus 3:14 idea is from a brainstorm from me and my friend trying to find obscure references in the album. It makes a ton more since to me then the 14 albums theory (since the band has always said this is their 11th album). After we kept finding more times the verse fit into the album, we basically became convinced....

U2 – Vertigo Lyrics 19 years ago
i have a different view on the unos, dos, tres, catorce opening. unos when used in front of a group of numbers can mean "about"... the rest of the numbers reference Exodus (2nd book of the bible) 3:14 -- which reads:

God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' "

If you open the CD booklet for HTDAAB:DE you'll notice this verse is written on the opening page ...It is also referenced in All Because of You where he sings "All because of you, I Am." (This made clear in the booklet) Also in the original language, Hebrew, the word for I Am is Yahweh, sound familiar? Thats because its the ending song to the album. I really think just like the Jer 3:33 reference in ATYCLB that Bono is saying this album is about Exodus 3:14 in the opening song.

About the song's lyric in general, i think its about seeking God's love so you can learn2kneel during temptation, the "all this can be yours" 3 times is Satan talking to Jesus in the desert.

U2 – Beautiful Day Lyrics 19 years ago
i love the flood references in this song, what this song means to me is when everything is going wrong just realizing how lucky we are to have another day to live... every day really can be a beautiful day if you want it to.

U2 – Yahweh Lyrics 19 years ago
This song could be a hymn. a post-modern hymn but still... I belive when Bono sings "always pain before a child is born" that he's talking about the pain that Christ suffered on the cross before we can be born again... still i'm waiting for the dawn is a little more obvious as Bono often uses the dawn (or something similar) as a symbol for heaven. "still i'm waiting for (heaven)" would be my interpretation. In the last verse he says "why the dark before the dawn" the dark is our time on earth, which is full of pain, suffering, war, trials -- our hope is to wait for the dawn which we only achieve after Christ's pain on the cross. To further push the salvation message Bono adds "what no man can own, no man can take"... this could mean since man does not own his own body he can not take his own bodies salvation. Salvation is through grace, and its nothing we can take. I also can see this being an ode to walk on saying we can't take anything to heaven on earth because it belongs to God, we don't own it. Finally it closes with Bono saying "take this heart and make it break"... a humble heart is what we all need especially in this dark before the dawn. Another U2 masterpiece.

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 19 years ago
This song jumped about 5 up my top songs list while reading this forum... i love all the different interpreations and especially the religous imagery that is so blatant to me now. I also remember either Adam or Larry saying that they couldnt imagine this song being played at a wedding, and that it would be more appropriate for a church service. This confused me at the time because i thought it was the convential girl/guy relationship but now i can accept that as a part of the meaning but filled with a longing for God and a spritual emptiness we all fill at times. If anything I think that this song would have to do with God's intervention in a guy/girl relationship as if Bono is putting aside romantic love to make way for a deeper spiritual love for God. Awesome stuff.

U2 – Where The Streets Have No Name Lyrics 19 years ago
U2 songs can be open to many ways of interpretation to certain people, but i think certainly the most dominant interpretation is that the song is about heaven. When U2 performed this song live during the Popmart tour there was an extended ending where Bono sang "then there will be no time for sorrow, then there will be time for shame" this is almost a direct quote from Relevations 21 describing heaven... the streets that Bono is talking about could very well be the golden street described in that same passage in heaven! This is my favorite song of all time and like Bono says everytime they play it its like "God walks into the room."
