Ben Folds – Bitch Went Nuts Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Does anyone else like the fake version of this song better? |
The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – I'm The Urban Spaceman Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"My natural exuberance spills out all over the place" is such a great line. I have no idea what it's about. |
The Beatles – Birthday Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Just to echo handsdown4dbhahaeatles: I'm fairly certain that "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles" line was a joke. Paul has referred to Ringo as "the best drummer ever." While not all of Paul's solo work has been amazing, some of it has been quite good and it does seem a bit out of line to say he wasn't a good song writer. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is a great song! tres_oiseau might be the most polite person on the internet. I play this song on any birthday occasion. It's obnoxious, really, but it's just such a joyous song...I don't see how you can get sick of it. |
Ben Lee – Light Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think the song's supposed to be religious [which is strange to me because I always got a weird sexual vibe from it]. Ben Lee is some form of Hindu [I believe, correct me if I'm wrong]. For the most part, the song is self-explanatory, and parts of it sound a bit like Hindu poetry, a lot of which talks about Krishna as a lover. |
The Magnetic Fields – A Pretty Girl Is Like... Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"A melody is like a pretty girl Who cares if it's the dumbest in the world" Very funny, Stephin Merritt. |
Barenaked Ladies – One Week Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Best line, in my opinion: "Like Kurosawa I make mad films Okay I don’t make films But if I did they’d have a samurai" For the person who asked about Smoking Man, he was an antagonist on the X-Files. He didn't have a real name and was always seen smoking, hence the name. As far as villians go, he was very cool. |
Johnny Cash – It Ain't Me Babe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The song was written by Bob Dylan. He and Johnny Cash were big fans of each other, hence the cover. It's about his reaction to being referred to as a "prophet." |
Ben Kweller – This Is War Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song makes me feel like a bad ass whenever I listen to it. And I love that he rhymes "battlefield" with "battlefield." |
Ben Lee – Catch My Disease Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There are a lot of Ben Lee songs on my "Bad Mood" playlist [slower, sadder ones, obviously]. This song got on there by accident, and while it is incredibly dorky, by the end I actually did feel better. |
Mos Def – Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Do I love this song? M-O-S-D-E-F-initely. Was that a bad joke? ...yes. |
Ben Lee – The Frail Girl Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Ben Lee: may I please have your children? |
Steve Burns – I Wanna Be Your Alpha Male Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Anyone secure enough in themselves to repeatedly shout the words "Gonna be your Alpha Male" is cool in my book. Any other short people really connect with "I'd be cuter if I wasn't so short"? Personally, someone literally told me "a few inches would help you out a lot." I thought shortness on girls was inherently adorable. Apparently I was wrong. |
The Flaming Lips – Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
" I don't understand the line "A poor man's Donald trump" seeing as Donald trump is a rich american man? " Maybe because Donald Trump is self-serving? Suicide bombers say they're dying for the greater good but in fact are dying to serve themselves? I'm stretching here, so obviously...it's likely that I'm wrong. |
Elton John – Pinball Wizard (The Who cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The line is actually "Always gets a replay, never tilts at all" |
The Magnetic Fields – Papa Was A Rodeo Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Has anyone else ever cried simply because of this song? |
The Magnetic Fields – How Fucking Romantic Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The first MF song I ever heard. I was instantly hooked, of course. |
Jeff Buckley – Kanga-Roo Lyrics | 18 years ago |
What does it mean to want someone "like a Kangaroo"? |
Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Reminds me of my friends. Good friends will just sit with you and do nothing, will cheer you up, will love you forever. Chasing cars reminds me of "Trainspotting"--it's just doing nothing. Like what kids do when they hang out together. |
The Flaming Lips – The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your Power) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think you're all thinking a bit too small. I don't think it's about the top 5% in particular and their decisions. I think the song is in criticism of all the people who say "Everybody should just to this" when talking about politics or something but don't actually bother to inact change. They complain about this and that, but what would they actually do if they had some power? A liberal can preach all he wants that if he were rich he'd share all his money, but if he actually had the money, would he? A conservative can say he'd make abortions illegal if he could, but if given the opportunity and the right amount of power, would he? It's impossible to tell when you're not in that situation how you would act. And just because you think something's right, no matter how strongly you believe it, it might not turn out how you think: "Are you crazy? It's a very dangerous thing to do exactly what you want" So, yes it's about people who aren't helping society, but those people...are society. And while that sentence on its own doesn't make any sense, hopefully the rest of this did. |
The Smiths – Asleep Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Am I the only person here who absolutely HATED Perks of Being a Wallflower? Who was somewhat insulted that this song was referenced in it? Brilliant song, though. Perfect way to end an album. "Bye bye." |
The Smiths – Vicar in a Tutu Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I live in Austin, and we've got a local celebrity, Leslie. He walks around in women's thongs and heels and not much else--he's not strange, he just wants to live his life this way! He's also annoying as hell, though. |
Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics | 18 years ago |
When I saw them in concert, before they played this song Liam said "This song's for all the ugly girls." Just a little anecdote for you. |
Ben Kweller – SHS-10R Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"all the rappers from l.a. to new york city i pitty cause im combining texas with midi" As a Texan and a geek, I must say, this is a fabulous line. Great song. Really good first line. |
The Strokes – On The Other Side Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Personally, I love it. Juicebox: "I will train my eyes to see" Obviously, he's judgemental, so...forcing himself to be open minded "And my mind is as blind as the birds on a tree" Now that I look at it again, this just seems like a struggle to rhyme, but I think it could be taken one of two ways: 1> Birds are extremely specific creatures, so his "mind being blind" could again be him being close-minded and overly specified, like a bird. 2> Unless one bird is a predator of another, different types of birds will sit on any given tree in harmony and their songs kind of mix together until it's a loud chatter. Again, with the closed/open mindedness thing, once he "trains his eyes to see," he won't notice people's specificities and they'll mesh with the beauty of everything....insert more flowery, cheesy sentences here... |
Keane – She Has No Time Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Feels like this is being told from the point of view of a sort of mutual friend who knows both "he" and "she" very well. The "she" is one of those people who is always the shoulder to cry on for the "he." She of course loves him but doesn't say anything because he needs her to be there for her so he can vent about his own relationship problems, ignoring that she is very lonely herself. Eventually, she gets fed up with unrequited love and avoids him. He doesn't understand why she won't talk to him, and this is the mutual friend explaining her situation to him. Just speculation on my half, and it doesn't really look too deeply into the lyrics, so it's likely I'm wrong. Beautiful song either way. |
They Might Be Giants – Dinner Bell Lyrics | 18 years ago |
So, uh...: "Shoulder, bicep, elbow, arm Forearm, thumb, wrist, knuckle, palm Middle, pinky, index, ring" Why? Just cause it's cool to list body parts? Or is there something I'm missing? |
They Might Be Giants – She's Actual Size Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"She's stuck in my heart now, where my blood belongs" I love this line. It's somewhere between very funny and very poetic. Closer to funny. |
Keane – Wolf at the Door Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song could serve as a tribute to Radiohead. Observe: "Wake me, shake me from my sleepiness" Sort of like... "Wake from your sleep...." from "Exit Music" "Inside out and upside down" Repetition of similar phrases reminds of "Sit Down. Stand Up." "The wolf's at the door" Obviously, "A Wolf at the Door" "And all your streetfighting years" "Street Spirit"? "Lead me, guide me home old scatterbrain" Obviously, "Scatterbrain." However, this would rely heavily on the band not contructing this song until after the release of Hail to the Theif, and as much as I adore Keane, I'm not well-versed enough in their history to know that this is the story. It's almost certain that my speculation is incorrect, but I think the idea's a bit funny, and I like it. In actuality, I think this song could be about entering adulthood, sort of realizing getting by on your own is difficult and being an adult isn't all fun and games--sort of a wake-up call. |
The Dirtbombs – Chains of Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
So, we're all in agreement then? Dirtbombs rule? Well, okay, let's get more lyrics up and start discussing them! I AM LIKE....a booger? |
Steve Burns – Maintain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is probably my favourite song on the album, it's got a beautiful, airy guitar sound and pleading vocals which lead me to believe it's about that feeling you get when you know you should probably break it off with someone, but you love the way they make you feel about yourself. The companionship and the love--whether it's actually there or not--makes you feel whole, so you sort of try to "maintain" a relationship, inventing something in your head about how it's all actually perfect, i.e. "Turn it all into a harddrive And plug me in I don't want to know" |
Rooney – Daisy Duke Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I took "bow down" to be more of an "OBEY ME" thing than a blow job thing--which I get sort of from the whole thing. It's a younger girl in a relationship who's getting kind of jerked around by a man who likes to be in charge, and it's clearly not something she was expecting. I have no idea why they chose to reference Dukes of Hazzard. |
Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is the perfect example of why I both hate and love the 80s. |
The Zombies – The Way I Feel Inside Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I sang along when they played it in Life Aquatic. That whole soundtrack rocks. |
Reel Big Fish – I Want Your Girlfriend To Be My Girlfriend Too Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I, too, miss their sax player. This song rocks my socks! "Maybe I could kill you" |
Mos Def – Rock N Roll Lyrics | 19 years ago |
As am I. Shall we collect all the people posting about Metallica and bring them over here? |
DVDA – Only A Woman Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Okay, this song is really funny, sure but...anybody else ever stop to think--looking back on "Only a Woman," "This Side of Me," and "On Top Of You"--that Trey Parker is REALLY romantic and sweet? |
Rooney – Blueside Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Anyone ever think this might be about him trying to show people that he's open-minded to other political views? Red=Republican, Blue=Democrat...a lot of Liberal Democrats think anyone with the tiniest hint of right wing views is just a Redneck Republican, so maybe he's trying to prove them wrong(?) |
Rooney – I'm Shakin' Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I don't think it's about love or drugs or influenza [though that's my new favourite interpertation]. It's just "one of those days." In song form. You're out of it. |
DVDA – I'm So Ronery Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A lot of songs like this end up just being credited to DVDA, though. People are ALWAYS crediting "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" to DVDA. Which...yeah, it's most of DVDA...Trey and Matt...but still. I'm sure Trey wouldn't care. |
The Beatles – Get Back Lyrics | 19 years ago |
There's one line in this song that I REALLY don't understand: "Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman But she was another man" Can someone please explain at the very least what they think it means? |
Bright Eyes – Waste of Paint Lyrics | 19 years ago |
My absolute favourite thing about what people have been posting on here is that it all has line breaks like a poem or something. In my humble opinion....best Bright Eyes song. |
