Right Said Fred – I'm Too Sexy Lyrics 9 years ago
A lot of folks have commented that the song is making fun of people for being too into themselves (and I'm guessing others may think it just is as it sounds-- a salute to your sexy body!).

I don't think it needs to be one side or the other. The message I hear is it's okay to be into yourself, to be able to look in the mirror and say "Damn sexy! Looking good!!" but that we also shouldn't take everything so seriously. Because though I'm not naturally into super buff men, I can still see that he would look sexy to a lot of people, he knows it, he's happy to go with it, but he's still able to crack some jokes along the way. And that confidence and humor is what makes ANYONE sexy, no matter their body ;)

Wall Of Voodoo – Mexican Radio Lyrics 10 years ago
Barriers to clear communication-- language barriers, infrastructure (fuzzy signals), and the different lenses that we use to view our lives (making sense of U.S. inflation or, in remakes of the song, the Iraq invasion)-- don't need to limit curiosity. Meaningful communication can still be shared through the feeling // rhythm (as in sharing music).

By the end of the song, he's imagining a radio DJ in Mexico. He has some fanciful ideas about what they eat there, and pictures himself taking song requests on the phone. Then he imagines tuning into the radio south of the border, and being unable to understand what the U.S. DJs are saying.

Or, in a sense, language barriers may limit communication, but values do so even more because, even when he hears folks speak in English about issues such as U.S. inflation or the Iraq invasion, he still doesn't understand.

So anyway, just wanted to point out that I don't think this song is strictly about Mexico or English/Spanish, so much as it's about communication and understanding in general.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – I See A Darkness Lyrics 10 years ago
The music video helps make the comical tone of the song more obvious.

He says he sees a darkness, and it's certainly true that everyone gets to dark periods, but it seems to me to be poking fun at how dramatic we can be when discussing those themes.

Bill Callahan – Free's Lyrics 11 years ago
We are always free, and we always belong to ourselves and to one another too. However, we forget that because we imprison ourselves in the past and the future by focusing on the past and future so much so that we are no longer living in the present.
When we are free to the experience of the present (a freedom which we always possess to be), you find your true self-- which exists in between the experience of the moment and your thoughts about your experience. Neither the experience nor your thoughts on the experience define you-- your true self is the part of you that witnesses-- and FEELS-- these events.
Once you have connected to your true self, you can no longer see yourself as a linear creature who once said things people derided, or did things people lauded. You are a constantly evolving being that is 'riding for the feeling'.
At that point, you are truly free-- disconnected from the ego and unified with the nature of existence. Thus, all belong to all.

George Thorogood – I Drink Alone Lyrics 14 years ago
So "drinking alone" is a state of being, the feeling of isolation, while the singer would literally prefer to be "by himself" in this state, with neither friends nor family.

George Thorogood – I Drink Alone Lyrics 14 years ago
I see this song as the lamentation of an individual who is in a slump and turns to alcohol. The individual may insist that he "prefers to be by himself" but it makes no difference. No matter who he is with, he feels alone ("The only one who will hang out with me is my dear old grayin' dad- and we drink alone"). This shows the isolation they both feel and their inability to communicate.

Cracker – Another Song About the Rain Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song deals with the inevitable flow of relationships (not necessarily romantic) throughout life. The singer is so jaded he no longer sees this as within his control, but simply as a working of "fate".

"Is it worth the things you lose
To board the train and watch the sky"
I see this as referring to an inexorable desire to abandon the past, abandon connections, and focus only only the infinite flow of time, the sky. But is it worth it?

The song then delves into a prior relationship, the ravages of which leave the singer consoling himself through song each night. However, every song is about 'the rain'- both in his head and on the radio. The rain, to me, is the multitude of sorrows every person must face, mounting up on the singer in a vicious storm. Not just the sorrows of an individual, but those of everyone.

i think this song is about a lawn competition. the singer is jealous that his neighbor has such a wicked garden, so he wants to burn it down so he can win first prize.

The Strokes – On The Other Side Lyrics 14 years ago
I see this song as a tribute to overcoming depression.
Initially, the narrator is "tired of everyone" and judges everyone before they can know them.
Thus they're convinced that no one is "waiting for them" on the other side of their drunken/depressed stupor. Therefore, they hate "everyone" and hate themselves for hating everyone because it is this very hate which separates the narrator from everyone else.
Drinking can only solve the problem for oh so long before the narrator is back to hating everyone. Then they are once more convinced there is no point to being sober or happy because no one will care, no one is "waiting for them."
Perhaps the narrator met someone who inspired them earlier in their life and they regain hope for taking control of their life. The narrator commits to viewing life and people from a fresh view.
With this positive outlook the narrator realizes that "you" (a specific person or perhaps the world in general) is waiting for them on the other side of their depression.

Rasputina – Signs of the Zodiac Lyrics 14 years ago
i don't really believe this song is a smear on astrology in part because melora has expressed esoteric beliefs in interviews: http://www.babysue.com/Rasputina.html
for me, this song is a question of how much control people have over their lives. believing in the signs of the zodiac would suggest that you don't have full control over what happens, that certain aspects of your life are matters of fate. therefore, even if you try to plan otherwise, certain things in your life were fated to happen despite any planning you could do.
if certain things are fated to happen then there is no way to "avoid what gave daddy his heart attack." thus, the only way to live a fulfilled life is to stop worrying about what will happen and instead focus on being a good person throughout your life regardless. this idea is expressed with the lyrics on blood-letting. the idea of blood-letting was to release negative humors from the body and thus cure disease. this idea could be transferred to a more general statement of purging yourself of negative psychological elements, living as pure a life as you can.
it hurts to admit to ourselves that we all have a level of malevolence within us ("oh honey i know it hurts"), yet it is only through admitting this that we can hope to release ourselves of "bad blood" and live a positive life no matter what events occur.

Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip – Waiting For The Beat To Kick In Lyrics 15 years ago
Laaawl it's:
Whether it be greed lust or just plain vindictiveness,
There's a level of malevolence inside all of us

Not:
Whether it be greed lust or just plain vindictiveness,
There's a level of benevolence inside all of us

They sound the same, but it's a pretty big difference in meaning.

Matchbox Twenty – Bent Lyrics 16 years ago
I think there is a guy who is leaning on his girlfriend for unrealistic support.

"And if I get too tired to make it
Be my breath so I can walk"

is later follwed by:

"Shouldn't be so complicated
Just hold me and then
Just hold me again"

which shows that he realizes his expectations are unrealistic, too complicated.
All the same, he hopes she can help him. However, she is "breaking him in" to the realization that he will never be the way he was before; this terrifies him.

He is also warning her she has only hit the surface of his problems:

"I started out clean but I'm jaded
Just phoning it in
Just breaking the skin"

She's only beginning to see him as he is. He fears she will not accept him, that she finds him too needy:

"If I couldn't sleep could you sleep
Could you paint me better off
(could she imagine he's really okay?)
Could you sympathize with my needs
I know you think I need a lot"

She, on the other hand, is already broken and he hopes to "feel all her pieces"
Together, they are bent, unable to help heal each other since they're both just as messed up as the other.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Zero Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reminds me of depression- of feeling disconnected from yourself. You look in the mirror and the face you see doesn't match- it's the same face you've had all your life and yet the feelings inside you are so different.
The sadness becomes an addiction, a means of escaping reality via the overwhelming blanket of depression. "She" is the depression and is all that matters.

Harvey Danger – Wrecking Ball Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not sure of the exact meaning for most of this song, but I'll start with the first line."Tear down the bearing wall" seems to be refering to having someone take away your support. The bit on the window and burnt sienna would be like someone making you see things for how they really are after taking away your support. Since the colors are refered to as 'bastard colors' it doesn't seem like the outlook is too good. "Put down the wrecking ball" could mean stop destoying your life or stop destoying my life. "Who has a friend, who needs one?" confuses me. I don't know if it's meant to say that they have no need for a friend or that they would be willing to be anyones friend. After that most of the meaning escapes me. "Liberties I've taken take me nowhere." could mean in a literal sense that all of the benefits they took for themselves are doing nothing for them. "Put down the wrecking ball Don't let a childhood linger" seems to be refering to someone other then the speaker in which case the speaker is saying to stop destroying your life as you try to relive the past. I take "Burn down the house Make sure the family is inside Nothing more to tether you Also no one there to catch you crying" literally and can relate to it well in wanting to lose the responsibilities bestowed by others and yet wanting them to remain in your life in a certain sense. "Every mess i make i make a run from nowhere Nowhere follows you" seems to say that the speaker is destroying their own life to follow someone else who is also destroying their life.

The Suicide Machines – Sometimes I Don't Mind Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow...I realized it was about a dog in a few days when I finally understood everything they were saying. At first though, I could only understand the chorus (Well I watch you sleep sometimes and it feels like the first time And you're always on my mind Everyday is like the first day And I talk to you sometimes even though you never talk back
And I buy you things sometimes 'cause I don't mind) And I thought the song was hilarious because I thought they were making fun of stalkers. Then I understood with (You lick my hands then I get a rash) and (I give you a bath when you smell like shit) that it was about a dog. I was a bit disappointed, but I still like the song. As much as I love this band though, I wish their lyrics were less obvious so it would be worth it to interpret them. There isn't really anything in any song to interpret as far as meanings go.

Train – Drops of Jupiter Lyrics 19 years ago
I really don't think the song could be about anyone physically dieing since the song mentions returning from a stay on the moon and coming back from a soul vacation. To me it is certainly about two people and one of them is a girl. However, it doesn't nescessarily need to be a girl and boy as it could be a girl and a friend of hers who was left behind. From ethier viewpoint my following meaning to the song seems to fit quite nicely although it has been said in many ways here many times. (Now that she's back in the atmosphere) obviously suggests that 'she' was far away whether this be physically or emotionally. (Drops of Jupiter in her hair) suggests she had a hard time as Jupiter is rather cold but it's in her hair so it's going to dry off like rain. (She acts like summer and walks like rain ) She's acting happy and excited and bounces when she walks. (Since the return from her stay on the moon) Once again, she has been far away but this could also suggest she was in a lifeless state of mind for a while as there is no life on the moon. (She listens like spring and she talks like June) She listens like everything is new to her just as Spring brings new blooms and she talks in a free manner. (Tell me did you sail across the sun Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded And that heaven is overrated) The sun is quite lovely but after a while the glare would hurt your eyes so she was doing something she enjoyed but it damaged her as well and wasn't everything she had expected it to be. (Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star One without a permanent scar) To me, this obviously suggests she fell for someone who was wonderful like a shooting star but like a shooting star this person soon disappeared. (And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there) And while you were having such a good time with this person, changing your life, did you miss me? (Now that she's back from that soul vacation Tracing her way through the constellation) She wasn't reachable for the singing person, she acted very different as her physical body was without a soul. (She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo) She's into very diverse things (exilerating and calming), which makes her likeable. (I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land) The singer is afraid she will no longer like him or her now that they have returned. (Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day) The wind is cooling but then it blew her away so she was caught up in something she couldn't stop that was brilliant at first like day but soon faded into night as the light of day can't last. (And tell me, did Venus blow your mind Was it everything you wanted to find And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there) Venus to me seems to refer to the goddess of love, Venus or rather Aphrodite. The singer is asking if the love was really that great and while you were in love, did you miss me. This suggests that 'she' was in love with a man, although it is perfectly possible that she loved a friend as a friend but lover or friend, this person left her like a shooting star. (Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken) This is just a lead up on can you imagine me not being in your life. (Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong) The singer is considering her as a best friend since it's even when I know you're wrong and is saying that he or she will always stick up for 'her'. (Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone conversation) Another lead up but I'm not really sure what freeze dried romance is...perhaps pre- prepared romance...? (The best soy latte that you ever had . . . and me) And there it is- can you imagine life without me? I used to love this song. Then I didn't enjoy it so much so. Meh.

The Suicide Machines – Give Lyrics 19 years ago
I suppose you could say it's about losing friends, but you have to put it into better context or else you could sem to mean that they are literally lost and therefore dead. I think it's basically about breaking off from a friend who one never really liked in the first place and only wishing one thought to have done it sooner.
