Modest Mouse – Lives Lyrics 18 years ago
Everyone's afraid of their own lives

self explanatory

If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?

the person this statement is directed towards obviously takes a negative outlook quite often.

No one really knows the ones they love
If you knew everything they thought
I bet that you'd wish that they'd just shut up

this is a sort of dark way of saying that even people we love are probably secretly obnoxious (it's not necessarily true)

Well, you were the dull sound of sharp math
When you were alive

possibly saying the person was intelligent?

No ones gonna play the harp when you die

no one will care when you die.

And if I had a nickel for every damn dime
I’d have half the time, do you mind?

meant to be nonsensical. a play on the usual "if i had a nickel for every time i..."

Everyone's afraid of their own lives
If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?

described above

Am I right? And it’s our lives
It's hard to remember, it’s hard to remember
We're alive for the first time

when you're born you don't realize how significant the experience is

It's hard to remember we're alive for the last time

you don't know exactly when you're gonna die, so you can't ever identify your last moment alive.

It's hard to remember, it’s hard to remember
To live before you die

here 'live' takes the more figurative meaning, like take risks and enjoy yourself live life to the fullest blah blah

It's hard to remember, it’s hard to remember
That our lives are such a short time

we don't always recognize that we should use our time on earth wisely because it won't last forever

It's hard to remember, it’s hard to remember
When it takes such a long time

sometimes, even though our lives are not very long, we feel like they are dragging on, especially during moments of sadness or depression

It's hard to remember, it’s hard to remember…

self explanatory

My mom’s God is a woman and my mom she is a witch
I like this

could be a reference to wicca, which is most often the worship of a female deity. the slang for a practicioner of wicca is "witch".

My hell comes from inside, comes from inside myself

creates his own problems; has self inflicted pain

Why fight this?

go with the flow, not everything needs to be a war.

Everyone's afraid of their own lives
If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?

again.

He thought he read minds and was not right

this guy thinks he has ESP but he really doesn't

That line still made him seem charming

when he says things like "i can read minds," people find it endearing, even if it's bullshit.

Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh noose tied myself in, tied myself too tight

the word 'myself' implies that the singer's pains are self inflicted. a good introduction.

Looking kind of anxious in your cross armed stance
Like a bad tempered prom queen at a homecoming dance

though it is not specified, i feel that the "bad tempered prom queen" is possibly the voice of the song's significant other, or love interest. these two lines make it clear that she is unhappy about something, irritated. i think that something could be the singer's attitude, or his tendency to create problems for himself.

And I claim I'm not excited with my life any more
So I blame this town, this job, these friends
The truth is it's myself

admitting that all the problems he finds in his life are his own, though he complains and blames his bad feelings on anything he can think of.

And I'm trying to understand myself
and pinpoint where i am
By the time I get things figured out
I've changed the whole damn plan

he's trying to get better so that he doesn't feel so terrible his life (and the implication from the earlier mentioned noose is that he has some suicidal tendencies), and so that he might work out his problems and be happier. the last two lines here indicate that no matter how hard he tries to right all his wrongs, he breaks his promise with himself and falls back into his depressing habits/thoughts/lifestyle.

Oh noose tied myself in, tied myself too tight
Talking shit about a pretty sunset
Blanketing opinions that i'll probably reget soon

the noose is the same as earlier, but the "talking shit about a pretty sunset" is to show how the voice of this song is able to find something negative about anything, even something that is indisputably beautiful. the "blanketing opinions" part indicates that he sometimes talks just to talk, not stating thoughts he has any real conviction about, but negative and oppressive words that he'll "probably regret soon" - because they are meaningless and untrue.

I've changed my mind so much I cant even trust it
My mind changed me so much I cant even trust myself

he always goes back on himself. he does not stick to the opinions he holds, which makes him dislike and distrust himself.

Beulah – Popular Mechanics For Lovers Lyrics 19 years ago
This is about a slightly neurotic person who can never have things be spontaneous.

"Did you forget to read the script?
There was never a role for him.
It was always you and me. Just me."

He didn't plan on having another person enter the scene, which is why he doesn't know what to do now.

"Popular Mechanics for Broken Hearts could help me now. "

He wishes there was some sort of manual that could tell him exactly to handle the situation.

"I know you never felt romance,
and we always lacked suspense.
But I can edit those parts out."

This reiterates what I said about his lack of spontaneity, and I think the girlfriend has found another person because she is so bored by her romance with this guy. He is definitely not exciting.

"I heard he wrote you a song, but so what?
Some guy wrote sixty-nine, and one just ain't enough.
And there's no sense even trying.
I know, cause I've been
trying all the time to find the song that would make you mine.
But all I ever find, my love, are clichés that don't rhyme. "

That entire thing is my favorite part.

"So make your way to the ocean
Let the warm, cool breeze just soak into your bones"

That part is just great.

And obviously it is about a city in which illegal things happen, like prostitution and drug dealing. A pretty typical city.

Beulah – Me and Jesus Don't Talk Anymore Lyrics 19 years ago
The introduction to this song is amazing, I love the piano.

"Can you get me there, friend?
Without a soul to sell along the way
The devil rides with me again
He always says everything's okay"

He gave up on Jesus, he is now a friend of the devil.

"Maybe I'm losing sleep over nothing
Maybe I'll be just fine
He tears me away from all those little things
That seemed so important when I knew you "

Maybe he used to date a Christian? In any case, when he dated this girl, he didn't cavort around with the devil.

"And can you get me there, friend?
You know the devil only holds a lease
And he's so hard to kick, man
It's been twenty years since I've been clean "

I think he means the devil has a lease on his soul, and therefore the devil is living inside of him. And it's been twenty years since the devil has been out of him.

"Maybe I'm losing sleep over nothing
He tells me I'll be just fine
He's in my blood, he's thicker than love
He seems so important, and you keep fading"

As this girl moves further and further out of the picture, the devil becomes a more and more important part of his life.

And I think the end is just him calling her and being rude on the phone. Possibly.

Beulah – I'll Be Your Lampshade Lyrics 19 years ago
"though i didnt mention
i prayed for you that day "

He broke up with a girlfriend, who he is singing to, and this is about how he hoped she would take it well.

"and though it was predicted
old times always sound so bad "

I guess their breakup was inevitable, but it still sounds bad recounting it.
"your calender was the saddest thing
that i ever read "

The girlfriend's calendar was blank. He is sad because it is clear that after their breakup, she hasn't been doing very well.

The chorus of "i hope you know youll always be the life of the party "
is really just meant to cheer her up, I think.

"though i wouldnt mention
i still say hi to you
I know you wonder if our time is over
how i want you to"
(the above is corrected from the posted lyrics)

Even though they don't date anymore, he still says hi when he sees her. She wonders if they will ever get back together.

"though we lost direction
bad times always seem so sweet
you pushed the rythmn but kept uphill
your heart was made of steel "
(the above is corrected from the posted lyrics)

The memories of their relationship are sweet, but after a while they lost direction. He remembers how cruel she was at times, and how she seemed uncaring at times.

It becomes vague to me in the next few lines, possibly just added for rhyming.

And then at the end,
"i hope you know there never was a party at all"

This is his way of telling the girlfriend that he was lying to her all along. She wasn't the life of the party, he was just trying to cheer her up because she seemed down, but after remembering how cruel she had been to him, he didn't feel like being nice to her after all.

Beulah – If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
This isn't about them wanting fame. Not at all. This is about how ridiculous it would be if they did everything to please their fans. Because Beulah put it with beautiful melody, it tricks some people into thinking they are serious. It's a nice tune, but the words don't mean shit.

Beulah – Hovering Lyrics 19 years ago
The first three stanzas refer to the man waiting in the airport for his love's plane to land.

"Why won't you write?
Write me a word to say
Tell me you miss my ways
Tell me you miss my face "

Clearly the woman he is about to see has not kept in contact, which could be because of the next stanza's message.

"I never meant to clip your pretty wings
Oh, your pretty, oh your pretty wings
And you always knew it, you saw right through it
So why'd you have to go? "

'pretty wings' could be any number of things here. Personally, I think he is talking about taking away her independence. He never meant to be controlling or to try and change her, and since she knew that he didn't mean to, why did she have to leave him?

The next stanza confirms that the plane is delayed and he is still waiting in the airport.

The one after that basically says that when she walks over to him, he can hardly breathe.

"The only words I let pass
I never meant to clip your pretty wings
Oh your pretty, oh your pretty wings"

He is so hung up on her leaving that he pretty much breaks down when he sees her. He wants her to know that he didn't want her to leave, and that he wants her to stay. He also wants to know why she left in the first place.

Beulah – Fooled With the Wrong Guy Lyrics 19 years ago
"How did you get so big?
Did you eat too much
Did you bite off more than you could prove "

I think he had a girlfriend who became famous and forgot all about him. When he talks about her being 'big' I think he means her ego, not her physique.

"So Hollywood
Riding with the stars
And all the regulars know
Just who you are "

This just restates how she became famous or got noticed or something like that and left him.

"I've got the biggest heart
You've ever torn apart "

I think he is trying to remind her that he has been the nicest guy she has ever dated, so it's not like her deserves to have his heart broken.

"How did you get so drunk?
I guess you had enough
You swallowed more than we all knew "

Now that she's famous, she parties too much.

"So many friends
Only hold you when
You got dreams for them to sink
Their teeth into "

Her friends are in show business, and they only want to be nice to her when they can make money off of her.

When he sings about fooling with the wrong guy, it might just be me, but it sounds like he might want revenge of some sort. Who knows?

Beulah – Don't Forget to Breathe Lyrics 19 years ago
"Your last words will not be heard
There are too many of them no one deserves
I don't need your love "

This first line makes me feel like my heart is breaking every single time I hear it. It's so beautiful and sad. you can't help but love this song. I think because of the way he says no one deserves her words, the girl is a nasty piece of work.

"Landmines hide in your lines
There's too many maps and not enough signs "

Landmines, or bombs, are in everything she says. I think by this he means that everything she ever told him was a lie. This girl is definitely not honest.

"So lie awake
So wide awake
Cause in my dreams I'm dying
We wait for light
To kill the night
But is it worth me trying?"

He loses sleep over whether or not to take the girl back, whether or not it would be a waste of time for him.

"A deep breath out on the steps
It's only air that you feel in your chest "

This is how he calms down. Maybe he is crying over her, and he is probably trying to reason with himself out on his porch that there is no reason to cry/be upset.

"Okay you staked your claim
It's only blood you have in your veins "

Basically, he is telling the girl that he gets it. She doesn't want him. Fine. But he reminds her that she doesn't need to be so terrible about it, it's ot as though she has ice in her veins.

The next line reiterates him losing sleep over her. He doesn't want to sleep because when he falls asleep, he only has nightmares.

"And it's so late
Where will you stay?
It makes no difference
Cause it's all a dream
And tomorrow I'll wake
Tomorrow I'll wake
It makes no difference
Makes no difference "

They lived together, so he wonders breifly where she will stay if she's leaving him. Then he decides to not care, he decides that "it makes no difference" to him.

"Close your eyes
And the moon will sigh
Is it worth me trying?"

Clearly he still cares for her, and is wondering if it was the right thing to let her go. Pretending not to care when she left was just an act, and now he wonders if he should try to get her back. He wonders if it is worth it.

Beulah – A Man Like Me Lyrics 19 years ago
"I run my hands down your neck
Across your back to another fret "

Well, frets are on guitars, so either he is singing to a guitar or he is simply describing how he wrote a song for a woman he loves and now he is performing it for her.

"And my love is a lot like yours
It's been crippled by the wars we wage
We're hopeless
We're on the losing side "

Basically, the relationship he has with this woman is very fragile. They have fought so much that it has weakened or "crippled" their love for each other.

"You never speak when we're making love
You never mean it when you come to me
With your arms stretched "

Basically he doesn't feel like the woman is being honest with him. He doesn't think she really loves him.

As a sidenote, I don't think he is trying to tell his girlfriend that she has an elongated spherical shape. The words are not, therefore, "Defenseless and oblong", but "Defenseless and alone".

My favorite part is when he says
"I taste you on my fingers
And I smell you on my lips"

Also, soundgoround, it's not emo, so please don't get too excited.

Beulah – Gravity's Bringing Us Down Lyrics 19 years ago
"You train your fingers, cocked"

translates into

"You're trigger finger's caught"

If it had been talking about the actual TRIGGER, then it would be plausible that the words were 'cocked' and not 'caught'. However, they are talking about the trigger FINGER, that is to say, the finger on the trigger.

How often do you cock your finger? You can cock a trigger, not a finger. Therefore I can assure you it is 'caught'.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Criminal Piece Lyrics 19 years ago
Ted Leo's main point in this song is that it is criminal to keep quiet about something you feel strongly about. More specifically, I think he is talking about speaking out against political matters that we might be against.

I think this is a simple song about a father worrying about his daughter. More specifically, he worries about the world his daughter lives in. These are all guesses, by the way.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Counting Down The Hours Lyrics 19 years ago
"But after listening all morning, as I drove down 95
To a story of detainees who were barely kept alive"

This is about the prisoners at Abu Graib who were tortured.

"I could deal with trying to process pigeons acting like they're doves
But not with interference from the power lines above "

This means that pigeons on the powerlines were messing up the signal, so the driver couldn't listen to the report of Abu Graib.

"And if I told you I felt ageless, would you tell me I'm not old? "

Telling someone that they aren't old when they say they feel ageless is a sure-fire sign that you haven't been listening to what they said. This means that the person feels misunderstood.

this song is off of the semi-political album 'Shake the Sheets', so it's not surprising that this line is in here. I believe it refers to our current situation.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Me and Mia Lyrics 19 years ago
Eating Disorders

As I was walking through a life one morning
The sun was out, the air was warm but ohh,
I was cold,

Well, when you have an eating disorder like anorexia or bulimia, and it makes you lose weight, it will also make you lose body heat faster.

and though I must have looked a half a person,
to tell the tale in my own version,
It was only then that I felt whole.

Because this person has been subjecting themselves to restrictive eating, they look irregularly skinny, or 'half a person'. But because this person feels good being hungry (I have read that some people actually like how veing starved feels), they feel 'whole.'

Do you believe in something beautiful?
Then, get up and be it!

This could be about trying to fit in with society's standards of beauty. Do you think you should look like her? Then do it!

Fighting for the smallest goal:
to get a little self-control.
I know how hard you try.
I see it in your eyes.

The smallest goal would be losing weight, or 'gaining self control' over what you eat. The singer is also saying that this is just some people's way of trying to fit in. They try hard for something they feel is important, but in the end it just ends up hurting them.

Call your friends, 'cause we've forgotten
What it's like to eat what's rotten,
and what's eating you alive,
might help you to survive.

Basically: get help!! Call your friends, eat some food. 'What's eating you alive' refers to the person worrying that their eating disorder is getting out of control. And the singer says this worry is what could help you stay alive: listen to your body! Feed it!

We went on, as we were on a mission,
latest in a Grand Tradition.
Ohh, what did we find?
It was Ego who was flying the banner,
Me and Mia, Ann and Ana, ohh,
we'd been unkind.

Here the singer takes on the persona of one with an eating disorder. 'Ego flying the banner' refers to his and Ann's unhealthy desire to look 'beautiful.' I think the grand tradition is a reference to how many people nationwide struggle with eating disorders. 'Me and Mia' is the singer and his/her trouble with bulimia and 'Ann and Ana' is the friend, Ann, and her troubles with anorexia. The reason they have 'been unkind' is because the eating disorders went too far, 'Me' and 'Ann' are now dangerously unhealthy.

Do you believe in something beautiful?
Then, get up and be it!
Fighting for the smallest goal:
to get a little self-control.
I see it in your eyes,
I see it in your spine,
But call your friends, 'cause we've forgotten
What it's like to eat what's rotten
And what's eating you alive,
Might help you to survive

Again, the standard of beauty. Also 'I see it in your eyes, I see it in your spine' shows that the person is now very very thin. And it shows that people with eating disorders really are trying very hard, even if it's for all the wrong reasons.

Even the nights that could get better.
And even the days aren't all that bad.
And after a week of fighting,
As more and more it seems the right thing

A week into the eating disorder's clutches, their doubts about it being unhealthy or wrong are slowly disappearing.

Do you believe in something beautiful?
Then get up and be it
Fighting for the smallest goal:
To gain a little self-control

This is the same as before.

Won't anybody here just let you disappear?
Not doctors, nor your mom nor dad,
But me and Mia, Ann and Ana
Know how hard you try,
Don't you see it in my eyes?

It seems that the singer and Ann's parents have been taking them to doctors and making a fuss over thier disorder's. The singer sympathizes, saying 'won't anybody here just let you disappear?' which translates into 'why won't they just let you become as skinny as you want?' The lead singer says that doctors and their parents don't understand how important this is to them, so the struggling people feel like only their eating disorders understand: that not eating is the only thing that can make them feel better.

Sick to death of my dependence,
Fighting food to find trancendence.
Fighting to survive.
More dead, but more alive.
Cigarettes and speed to live,
And sleeping pills to feel forgiven.
All that you contrive,
And all that you're deprived.

The lead singer and Ann are sick of relying on food. They fight it because it makes them feel better. In order to help the cravings, they take speed or smoke cigarettes. Clearly the disorders are becoming more and more serious as time goes on. Because they are taking so many chemicals into their system and have not eaten for a long time, it is difficult to get to sleep, so they take sleeping pills when they can't get to bed on their own, to escape thier problems.

All the bourgeois social angels
Telling you you've got to change.
Don't have any idea.
They'll never see so clear.
But don't forget what it really means to
hunger strike,
When you don't really need to
Some are dying for the cause, but that don't make it yours.
And even the nights, they could get better

The bourgeois social angels are models and actresses and all these too-thin people we feel like comparing ourselves too. They don't know the horrible impact they are having on people all over who struggle with eating disorders. The last part of the song is the most important, I think. The lead singer says to remember you are not stopping eating for a valid reason. Other people go on hunger strikes for political reasons and it doesn't mean that you should hunger strike for no reason. The reference to 'nights that could get better' is about losing sleep over guilt about the damage disorder sufferers are doing to themselves. It is a difficult and confusing string of illnesses to overcome, and it is not uncommon to lose sleep over it.
