Carrie Underwood – Blown Away Lyrics 10 years ago
The video does a good job of interpreting the lyrics although they are pretty mild when it comes to the abusiveness of the father. The song makes it seem like he's a drunkard who beats the hell out of his daughter (Carrie - both in song and video).

The premise is pretty obvious in that since her mother in the song has passed away she continues to pray for a tornado to come and blow the house she lives in with her father away and wash away all the bad memories she has of that life. I have thought that in the beginning of the song when she's praying for that, she doesn't really care if she's in the house or not when the twister hits; she just wants the house to cease to exist.

The twister does come however she now has a choice to make. Her drunkard father is passed out with the storm about to hit. She now has a choice. She could call for help, try to drag him to safety or let the storm grant her prayer of blowing away and tearing down the house, memories and take her father with it. In the video, they do a good job of having Carrie silently stare at her father pondering this choice before essentially leaving him to die.

Nobody will ever know that she had a chance to save him but chose not to. The assumption is in the end he'll be another victim of an Okalahoma tornado; one of many. She saw this as her chance to finally be free from the house and his abusive grasp and took it.

Many parrallels to Independence Day which makes since as one of Carrie's idols (no pun intended) growing up was Martina McBride.

Iron & Wine – Passing Afternoon Lyrics 12 years ago
A beautiful song that couldn't have fit the end of Wilson's Heart (House season 4 finale) better.

To me, this song is all about dealing with loss and how as much as we'd like to think the days of our lives will go on forever, our lives are a finite timespan.

"There are things that drift away
Like our endless numbered days"
- One of my favorite lines in the song, especially the endless numbered days part. As noted above, we often treat life like it is endless however all of us are 'on the clock' so to speak and do have a continually reducing amount of time left on Earth. Very strange to think about it that way, but absolutely true.

"There are things we can't recall
Blind as night that finds us all"
- The 'night that finds us all' is a reference to death. Death is the final stop of life and it is not possible to avoid; something everyone will at some point experience.

"A baby sleeps in all our bones
So scared to be alone"
- Admit it or not, everyone fears loss. We may put on a strong front but ultimately we fear losing loved ones and being alone in that sense like a child is afraid of being physically alone with nobody else around them.

Roger McGuinn – King Of The Hill Lyrics 12 years ago
I've had the benefit of watching the music video which is a pretty close literal interpretation of the lyrics. However, it seems to be about someone whose greed, lust, etc. have finally caught up with them. The subject - who is almost assuredly male - is probably on the run from so

In the first verse, I think the subject is 'making a run for it' and leaving town. By saying "L.A.'s asleep" and "the night air is cold - the freeway is clear", it infers that the person is on the road by themselves. The only time the freeway in L.A. is really clear from traffic is very late at night.

He seems to be skipping town on short notice as evidenced by the line "In a green Gucci bag..." meaning that he likely threw his most prized stuff into a bag and left hurredly.

The second verse, sung by Tom Petty, refers to the lifestyle he lived prior to this happening. He likely had a large house ("the driveway is long") and a beautiful/trophy wife ("your princess is lovely") and was probably used to people jumping when he spoke ("your servants all wait for your knock on the door").

I also think this verse is a subtle foreshadowing to what awaits him and also implies that his money, power, success, etc. was not acquired very ethically or even legally. There are numerous stories of people who were financial successes only to find that their success was built on lies and deceit. Bernie Madoff is probably the best example however there are many more.

This song seems to be about someone who followed that path - acquired all kinds of material wealth by less than legal means and those actions have now caught up to them. Such is Petty's line "How many years, will you crawl through this castle?" as many people who took that road are often driven by pure greed and greed begets greed. So despite having virtually everything material you could want, the person still wants more and it is never enough. This causes more and more actions to gain additional wealth or maintain the current state which can lead to even more illicit activities to keep it that way.

The last verse is quite ominous and it appears things didn't end too well for the subject. If you watch the video, he has several business associates over for a night of drinking, women and over the top celebration; only to be taken away forcefully. We can assume the people who did this are related somehow to those he did business with and probably screwed over in some way.

However, another interpretation is that the subject here committed an even more serious crime - murder - via the line "the driveway is empty" (he got away and is on the run as referenced in verse 1) and "there's blood on the wall" (evidence of the crime is in his 'castle' but he's nowhere to be found).

Like with most good songs, there are a number of interpretations one can take. The title to me is a reference to the feeling that power, wealth and money give you - the absolute king of the world. Like you rule everything. However, the lyrics suggest that those things are both material and temporary and show what happens when they are acquired and enjoyed in excess.

Kanye West – All of the Lights Lyrics 12 years ago
The title definitely is a reference to fame; more specifically showing us the listener there are many things going oh behind the scenes of famous people that nobody ever sees or pays attention to. Thus, by turning up "all of the lights", those things can be amplified and brought to light.

Agreed with above that the verse:

I slap my girl, she call the Feds
I did that time, and spent that bread
I'm headed home, I'm almost there
I'm on my way, headed up the stairs
To my surprise, a nigga replacin' me
I had to take him to that Ghetto University

can be a reference to the Taylor Swift/VMA incident. Kanye "slapping his girl" is a metaphor for his actions towards her that night - a 'slap in the face' to her achievement.

Him doing time snd spending bread is a reference to him being away from music for a while and doing things to repair his public image.

Heading home and up the stairs is a metaphor for Kanye getting back into music with the alubum this is off of - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. He's "going home" to where he belongs - back in the forefront of music.

The last two lines are a reference to Kanye noticing that while he's been away, other artists who he feels are lesser talents than himself (so, pretty much everyone LOL) have taken his place at the forefront of pop music.

Thus, by making MBDTF, he takes everyone - the aforementioned artists, fans, critics, everybody - to "ghetto university" meaning he unleashes an album so good and rugged nobody can touch it and reclaims his crown at the top of the charts and music business. Basically Kanye is saying "Listen to MBDTF, this is how it's DONE".

Meat Loaf – Everything Louder Than Everything Else Lyrics 13 years ago
The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory, however I've always thought this song is saying that you need to live with no fear, no regrets. Most people rarely remember the things you do in life, work, etc. - good or bad. Therefore, if you continually only worry about the future, you can never enjoy the present and sooner or later your life will be over.

I love the line that a "wasted youth is better by far than a wise and productive old age". My wife and I have talked about this in the past because in our younger days, I had periods of time as a hellraiser who used a fake ID, drank and partied and gambled a lot. She OTOH was a studious person who always followed curfew and listened to her parents.

She's told me in the past she wished she had been a bit more rebellious and had done more of what SHE wanted, not what everyone else told her she should do or be. For example, she went to medical school freshman year of college because her father wanted her to. He didn't pressure her to, he just expressed desire for her to be in the medical field. However, after a year she didn't like it and switched majors. In doing so, she found that not only was her dad OK with it (he just wanted her to be happy), but she was happier herself.

I graduated college, but had a lot of fun along the way. Now that those days are past both of us, she's said how she wished she could have been more like me and still gotten the same result I did (a diploma) but also had more fun. Again, nobody remembers what grades either of us got in college and most employers only care that you graduated. However, I have fond memories of some of the more *ahem* wild nights I had.

Bruno Mars – Grenade Lyrics 13 years ago
The meaning is pretty obvious. I think some people are reading way too much into this. While I appreciate individual interpretations and think they are quite interesting, sometimes to me the meaning is pretty literal.

The only metaphorical interpretation I can see for this song is the Christian one, especially if you've seen the video. I don't think that's what Bruno intended, but I can see it.

That said, the verses are decent, but the chorus is fantastic. Pretty simple meaning - he'd do anything for the girl and is using over the top scenarios to show how devoted he is (catching a grenade, being shot in the head, etc) however she clearly doesn't feel the same way. The video depicts him walking around with his "pain" (the piano) and not caring whe runs into - i.e. the Hispanics, traffic. It's a pretty deep meaning that nothing else matters to him.

Dire Straits – Money For Nothing Lyrics 13 years ago
I had actually never heard the applicance store story, but it definitely sounds plausible.

The subjects mentioned in the song (the "faggot", the "mama", etc) are most likely a reference to several different bands/singers who Knopfler felt personified the message of the song - getting lots of money and fortune for doing relatively little work.

If the appliance store story is true, perhaps Knopfler wrote it in retaliation as he felt that Dire Straits was a real rock band who put a lot of time and effort into their lyrics and songs only to have the movers lump them in with the likes of Motley Crue, Duran Duran, etc. To me, the song could be Dire Straits saying they are nothing like the pop/glam rock/synth/etc bands that were all over MTV at the time.

Jefferson Starship – We Built This City Lyrics 13 years ago
The line:

"Marconi plays the mamba
Listen to the radio"

is a double meaning imo. Marconi, as mentioned, was the founder of modern radio. So the Marconi reference is, literally, a radio. Like the actual thing that plays music.

The tougher part is the 'mamba'. Some have referenced it's a dance or type of music, but that's actually the MAMBO. The MAMBA is one of the most poisonous snakes in the world. Saying MAMBA instead of MAMBO fits more with the lyrical meaning of the song.

Since the song is about the corporatization (is that a word?) of I believe San Francisco, the Marconi (radio) is playing a mamba - corporate-filtered music that poisons the minds of those listening. The double meaning is since it's so close to mambo, that's what the listening public hears. They hear the sterilized, filtered corporate music ("mambo"), but it's really poison that's killing the counter-culture that defined the previous genre of the San Francisco area ("mamba").

For as silly as some of the lyrics in this song are, that line actually has a pretty deep meaning and was very cleverly written.

Kelly Clarkson – Never Again Lyrics 17 years ago
Man, Kelly Clarkson must have been REALLY screwed over by an ex-bf because a ton of her songs are about her having her heart broken and how she's dealing with it. "Behind These Hazel Eyes", "Because of You", etc...wow.

Like previously mentioned, I would not want to be the guy she's talking about and I believe there really is one. I thought I read somewhere that she did have a bad breakup just before she auditioned for American Idol.

Bet that guy is just kicking himself now. He could have had (who I think is) a hot, famous, rich girlfriend. Instead he doesn't have her and has to listen to her write songs about how much he sucks.

If it's really about a guy who screwed her over, she's doing quite a good job of pwning him.

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I actually find it mildly humorous when people are posting on here that "I don't think it's about drug addiction".

Um, the lead singer of THE FRAY, you know, the band who sings the song, says it is. In numerous places, at numerous times. It's cool that people can read their own interpretation and apply the lyrics to another situation in life (such as a breakup, being depressed, etc.) but you cannot say it's not about drug additction, when the song's writer says that's exactly what it was about.

He spent a summer at a drug addicted teen camp and came up with the idea for the song. You can find it anywhere on the Internet or elsewhere. Again, it's toally cool to apply the lyrics to another, different situation but don't say it's not about drug addiction because The Fray has confirmed it is.

Rihanna – Unfaithful Lyrics 17 years ago
I have no idea how someone can "just not help" cheating. That's the most asanine thing I've ever heard. DON'T DO IT.

I've been cheated on and cheated on others and it always sucks. And I can honestly say that I could have definitely helped it. I CHOSE not to, much like anyone else. I made the choice to cheat on the girl I was with and it was 100% wrong. And you know what - back then I didn't even care.

It's the exact opposite now. I feel terrible about what I did looking back at it in hindsight. And the reason I cheated was the reason most people do it, the most selfish reason of all - because I could. It was available, I was there, I chose to do it. Period.

There is no excuse for cheating. If you are doing it, you obviously either aren't ready for a serious relationship or don't really want to be with the one you love. Nobody should have to put up with cheating. I was wrong and regret every second of what I did back then. So is every other person who says they have cheated on here. There is no such thing as a "noble reason" for doing that to another person.

Kevin Federline – America's Most Hated Lyrics 17 years ago
No solioguy nailed it. People do hate K-Fed, but for all the wrong reasons. In wrestling (of which K-Fed is now getting into) that's the infamous "wrong kind of heat" vs. true heel heat which is what artists like Ice-T, Eminem and even the Dixie Chicks get.

They actually had a point and whether you liked it or not they were going to stand up for that point. People want those artists to change their views to match something more "mainstream" or to go more akin to certain values.

Federline lives to get high and party. So none of us hate him for that, we just want him to go away. Not exactly something to brag about.

No way sofaking, we need MORE K-Fed lyrics so we can all diss him more.

Yes, "Lose Control" is actually pretty decent however the music critics are right on with this guy - he can only rap about the following things:

- His (soon to be ex) wife
- His (soon to be former) huge bankroll
- How the media hates him
- Smoking weed and partying

I dunno, rapping about those same four topics would burn out pretty quick. LoL too that at his record release party when Britney showed up to support him and everyone started focusing on her he went ballistic towards HER. Yeah it's her fault people would rather see Britney than this tool. What an idiot.

Fergie – Fergalicious Lyrics 17 years ago
(In my best David Spade voice)-

"Nice song, but I liked it better the first time, WHEN IT WAS CALLED 'MILKSHAKE'"

Seriously, this song is a different beat but identical premise to Keilis' Milkshake. She's hot and knows how to use her sexyness to get what she wants, boys want her body, blah blah blah. More catchy "hip-pop" fluff that will be on the radio for a few weeks then dissapear forever.

Hmmm...kind of sounds like what happened to London Bridge, eh?

Oh yeah, Fergie and the BEP need a spelling lesson. It's TASTY. TASTEY is not word. Although on second thought neither was kizzer but Missy Elliott used it like a champ.

The beat is catchy and you can't help but nod your head.

That being said, the lyrics are asanine and sound like someone wrote them five minutes before they recorded the song. I highly doubt Fergie wrote either the beat or the lyrics so you can't credit her for the beat or diss her for the lyrics.

As far as the premise of the song? Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's about Fergie wanting to fuck whatever guy she's talking about.

Another hip-hop pop song that will be on Top 40 radio for about 2-3 weeks then dissapear forever.

Tom Petty – The Last DJ Lyrics 18 years ago
I too thought the lyric about "the boys upstairs want to see/how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free" to be about satellite radio.

Whether Tom is right or wrong to be making this type of album, he's dead on in pretty much every aspect.

I was wondering if the song title was about an actual DJ, perhaps someone Tom knew that got bumped or phased out by the "new" version of radio. Anyone know? It's probably about DJ's and radio in general, but I thought it could have a deeper, more personal meaning to Tom.

Agreed too about most radio stations going to shit and pushing whatever songs they feel like, not what people actually want to listen to. Same reasons it irritates me that most pop stations nowadays have turned into suburban hip hop stations.

Meat Loaf – Everything Louder Than Everything Else Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song (one of my faves ever and I'm not kidding) is about living life on your own terms and not being defined by someone else or someone else's rules.

I love the line-
"If you don't worry bout' the future
Sooner or later it's the past"

I don't think Meat's saying 'don't worry at all' but he's more saying 'live for the moment' and if you spend all your time worrying about the future, you will never enjoy the present. Basically you'll never enjoy life because you'll always be worried about something else.

The arguement that-
"A wasted youth is better by far
Than a wise and productive old age"

to me goes right along with the premise of the song. Live your entire life, even your youth when you likely have numerous adults (parents, teachers, counselors, etc.) trying to mold you into their version of who you should be, be your own. And if said molding adults think you're wasting your youth away by being you, so be it.

Awesome song to rock out to.

Chris Isaak – Graduation Day Lyrics 18 years ago
To add on (forgot to put this on my original), the line

"I thought you loved me
I was wrong"

is also a reference to his "graduating". Upon a graduation from anything, the graduate is more educated then when they started. To me, this is a pretty obvious reference to her cheating on him, him finding out she was a gold digger, something along those lines.

He has found this out and now is more educated on what kind of person he is so he can now "graduate" from the relationship (leave her and move on).

submissions
Chris Isaak – Graduation Day Lyrics 18 years ago
Easily a song about a bad breakup. He's lamenting on what was and what might have been. The "Graduation Day" refers to the fact that he's moving on from their relationship.

What happens at a graduation? People move on. HS graduates go on to college, college graduates go on to the work force, people distances themselves from what and wherever their previous life was.

That's what's happening here. He's "graduating" from the life he had with the person the song's about and moving on. However, like at a real graduation, you still think of the previous good times you had which is where he is right now. At the crossroad between the broken up relationship and moving on to something (or someone) new.

D4L – Laffy Taffy Lyrics 18 years ago
OK, I don't think this song was meant to be a hip-hop classic like "Nothin' But a G Thang", "California Love" or "Hypnotize".

Yes, the lyrics and song premise are absurd and yes the beat sounds like it was put together on a casio keyboard in five minutes. But every now and then it's a fun little song to jive to IMHO. Not something I'd ever buy or listen to on a regular basis, but if I hear this song in small doses (aka a minute of it or two) every so often (once every few months), I'm fine.

I remember when my brother said that a few of the guys on his college basketball team (Winona St. University, Winona, MN) were listening to "a song about girls shaking their laffy taffy". My honest response was "what the hell are you talking about".

He made me download the song and listen to it. He, I, my wife and his girlfriend all had quite the laugh over the fact that such a song actually exists.

Again, the song is up there on the Absurd-O-Meter with the likes of "Ice Ice Baby" and "Informer", but it's OK in (really) small doses. Oh yeah, "gurl shake dat' laffy taffy!".

I'm not a big Josh Groban fan either, nor am I a big fan of this genre of music. However, I think this is one of the most well-sung songs in musical history and I'm being completely honest.

One of the few songs I can say are absolutely beautiful. I always cringe when American Idol (I am a fan. I know, laugh at me, lol) contestant tries to sing this song. Even the really good ones. You just can't do it like Josh can. Several have come close, but the song itself is so BIG in terms of how it's originally sang, that I don't know if any amateur can hold a candle to it.

Again, beautiful song.

Eminem has said publicly that he feels incredibly guilty that he hasn't been there for several important events in Hailie's life. He almost missed her first day of school because he was in rehab recently.

Awesome song and lyrics.

The Black Eyed Peas – My Humps Lyrics 18 years ago
My interpretation of the song isn't Fergie saying that she uses all men to buy her stuff. I believe she's saying that if all a man is interested in is her "humps" and "lumps", then all she wants to do is use them.

If a guy only wants to get with her to have sex with her, than she'll drive them crazy by using her *ahem* assets and then move on.

Note how in the middle verse, they talk about "spending time and not money", the opposite of what Fergie says.

I think this song is for all the guys who just want to get on a girl and don't care about who she is. Fergie is saying if all the guy wants to do is use her for her body and sex, she'll use him right back for his money and not give him any anyways.

A catchy tune that gets crazy annoying with time and repeated listens IMHO.

I always thought part of the song was about looking at a girl (or guy) through the infamous "beer goggles", especially with-

Meaning that he is now looking at a girl who may not be entirely attractive while sober but now that the alcohol has taken effect, she's gorgeous.

To add on to my first post, the "marching band refusing to yield" is a reference to the Beatles dominating the rock scene during the era in which the song was written for. In fact, nobody even came close.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 19 years ago
My take on certain parts of the song-

A long long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
**A reference to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper's music and how much McLean respected them and liked their music.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
**The plane crash that killed Valens, Bopper and Holly on 02/03/1959. It happened in February and made him shiver. McLean also used to have a job as a paperboy delivery man. The "music died" because those three were the last of their genre, and harder rock n' roll was starting to rise and take over, such as the kind McLean's nemesis in the song, the Rolling Stones, play.

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
**A reference to 'A White Sportcoat (& a Pink Carnation)' by Marty Robbins in the 1950's, when Holly's brand of music still reigned King
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
**The 10 years are the drug induced years of rock 'n roll following Holly's death. "On our own" means there is no music for comfort now. The moss on a rolling stone is a jab at the Rolling Stones in that McLean thought they were in music for the money only. The "moss" is money and "growing fat" is another reference for becoming rich.

But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
**Previous posters are correct here. The Jester is Bob Dylan, the voice does literally come from us because he was the folksy voice of the American people during his time. Still undecided on who the King and Queen are here. I still guess Elvis and ???.

Oh, and while the King was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
**The thorny crown is the price of fame. It looks like something you'd want and kill for but there is more than meets the eye. This to me shows more that the King is Elvis. Dylan "stole" Elvis's fame as the top musician in America by laying in the weeds, meaning he never intended to become famous, Dylan just wanted to make music.
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
**Two possibles here, I can't decide which. The first is the literal trial of the Chicago Seven in 1968, which ended in a mistrial. The other thing it could mean is the courtroom is American music listeners in that they could not decide who was supreme, Elvis or Dylan.
And while Lennon [Lenin?] read a book of Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
**John, Paul, George and Ringo baby

And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died

We were singing
{Refrain}

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
**Charles Manson and his family said the Beatles song 'Helter Skelter' possessed them to commit their murderous acts

The Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
**The Byrds had a hit song with 8 Miles High

It landed foul out on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast
**Dylan was in a motorcycle accident which caused him to miss significant time from touring and making music. Thus, he was "on the sidelines" (not in the public eye) "in a cast" (literally).

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the Sergeants played a marching tune
**The sweet perfume is marijuana smoke, which has a sticky sweet smell. It also characterized the music genre about which McLean is writing. The Sargent's are the Beatles again.

We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died

We started singing
{Refrain}

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation Lost in Space
**Easiest one to get. Woodstock. Duh.

With no time left to start again
**Years of drugs, sex and rock n' roll had decimated the best years of that generation. Now they were all growing older and would never be young again.

So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
**Mick Jagger. The Stones had a hit with Jumpin' Jack Flash.

'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan's spell
**The Rolling Stones "Nightmare at Altamont" was a concert at the Altamont Speedway in California in 1969. The Stones had hired members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to work security at the concert. During the concert, a young black man was
murdered by the white crowd as the Stones played what some African-Americans refer to as "their" music, meaning blacks invented rock n' roll but whites such as Jagger stole it. Jagger also sang a song around that time about how "groovy it was to be Satan", which was fitting for what happened. The security guards (Angels) did nothing to stop the murder and were by some reports higher and more drunk than any of the crowd members.

And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrifical rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
**Again, Satan is Jagger.

He was singing
{Refrain}

I met a girl who sang the blues
**Easy one. Janis Joplin.

And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music woudn't play
**Can't remember the name of the store, but it was HUGE back in that day. The music store of the old genre. The music won't play because nobody remembers Holly, Bopper and Valens anymore and have switched their alligeance to anti-heroes such as Jagger. Basically, nobody cared about those three and thus their music "wouldn't play".

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
**A broken bell makes no sound, just like a dead musician. To me, this is McLean saying that music has no meaning anymore. Everyone is making it and writing lyrics just for the sake of writing lyrics while the three he loves had meaning to their songs.

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
**I think these three are Holly, Bopper and Valens again.
They caught the last train for the coast
**Another way to say deceased.
The day the music died

And they were singing
{Refrain}

They were singing bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die

ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC SONG. ONE OF THE BEST EVER EVER MADE.

Graham Parker – Platinum Blonde Lyrics 19 years ago
OK, since it's my lyrics, I'll add what I think it means as well because I LOVE this song.

This song is about a woman who appears to be perfect on the outside (physically) and has someone attracted to them so much they are willing to drop anything and everything to be with her.

The song is presenting two definitions of the woman. The first of which is the one who wants her's definition, aka the perfect female specimen.

"Kick that brunette into a pond, replace her with a...platinum blonde"
- He wants the girl so badly he's willing to drop his current girl for her. To me, the pond represents the old dating addage that there are 'plenty of fish in the sea'. The 'sea' or 'pond' being the dating pool.

Through the song, he learns that the grass definitely is not greener on the other side of the fence.

"She walks past but you can't form a whistle, even her lips look artificial"
- Everything about the girl is fake/phony. She puts on whatever front she needs to in order to get what she wants. The guy is starting to realize that.

"You wanna follow her but you can't swallow
Her act, it seems so superficial"
- Ditto.

In the end, the guy is the one who ends up getting dropped for the next guy (sucker) willing to fall victim to the girl's false charm.

"She seemed alive but she is just a cipher
An imaginary postcard that just dissolved "
- He was so convinced that she was the perfect girl, it hurts that much more for him to realize she is most definitely not. What he saw was what she wanted him to see and how he sees the "real" her.

"Endless sunsets glow in the distance
Painted by Picasso's assistants
Perfect people travel in Volvos
Into the sunsets into the distance"
- The Norman Rockwell version of a perfect World. This was his vision, which he apparently still has of the perfect life with the perfect girl. However, as previously mentioned, it is all an illusion that the girl's fake charm and his mind convincing himself that was the case. However, a Picasso painting is anything but clear and perfect, thus what he sees is violently skewed.

"You never seem to learn from the school of hard knocks
Then she walks past and laughs at the pond
You can't break a heart that doesn't respond"
- My favorite lines from the song. The guy does not learn that what he saw was fake (the easy way) and thus has to learn the hard way. The girl is now the one walking past "the pond", aka the dating pool and sees the guy as they are now finished. I think this means that he tried to extract revenge of some sort, but she never really loved him in the first place, and thus her heart cannot be broken because it doesn't respond to his love for her. She is laughing that he even attempted it. My guess is that he tried to leave her or threatened to when he saw through her fakeness and she was all for it since her cover was blown. He didn't really want to not be with her, he wanted to prove a point, however now he's back in the pond (single) and she's walking by laughing at his futile attempt to break her.

A few minor lyrical corrections-

"That put them triple X's at the end of Andy's Monica " should be "They put them triple X's at the end of Andy's moniker"

"I don't love the Peach State, brothers say it ain't so" should be "I don't love the Peach State, 'Bubba, say it ain't so'"

"Can't forget about my Betty Betty in the ?." should be "Can't forget about my Betty Betty and DeLonica"

Martina McBride – Independence Day Lyrics 19 years ago
The title is a double meaning. "Independence Day" has a literal meaning, in that these events happened on July 4th, or America's Independence Day.

It also refers to the day that her mom in the song finally had enough of her dad's abusive ways and declared her "independence" by setting fire to the house. I believe it's right to assume the father died, mother was arrested and daughter (Martina in the song) was taken to foster care.

However, her in-song mom gained independence from the abuse her in-song dad was giving for herself and Martina. Therefore, it was a "day of reckoning" or a day where her father finally had to own up for his past sins. Mom and daughter, while not together physically, were independent of the father's abuse.

Awesome song and lyrics!

Vitamin C – Graduation (Friends Forever) Lyrics 19 years ago
Even though I'm 24, this song still brings me back to when I graduated HS in 1999. Awesome capturing of how people grow up, old, and apart, but memories last forever.

It's strange how as seniors, we (as I'm sure most every class of seniors in history) couldn't WAIT until seniors last day and the time when we were free. However, after graduation, the grad parties, and the end of summer celebrations, we all realized that "hey, this is it".

I remember the last bonfire that our core group had. The next morning, six of the 12 people there were off to college either out of state or far enough away to be more than a simple drive. None of us wanted to go to bed and we all wanted to hold on to all the good times we had in HS.

That's what this song represents to me. I can still look back and remember most every party, date and dance we had. To me, it's about the realization that while you may outwardly say you want something like high school to end, deep down, you never realize what you have until it's almost gone.

Great song.

Eminem – Like Toy Soldiers Lyrics 19 years ago
bigmanoncampus asked-

"Who is Suge"

Suge (pronounced 'Shoog') is Marion Knight, the founder of Death Row Records, who Dr. Dre used to work for.

Dre wanted out of his Death Row contact because he saw that the company, which was engaging in numerous illegal activities besides producing rap music and had known gang members working for it, was about to take a fall.

Suge let Dre out of his contract but brought a bunch of gang bangers to his house with bats and said that all Dre's master recordings belong to Death Row, not him. That included I beleive unreleased stuff that Death Row had not laid claim to yet.

Dre left Death Row and started Aftermath Records. Soon after, Tupac Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas with Suge in the car. Many have long thought Suge had something to do with the Tupac hit, as he was about to leave Death Row as well and audit them for some $10 million they owed him.

Em says this line because Suge has had his other rappers and himself diss Dre for being fake and for deserting Death Row. Dre has tried to let it go, but Suge keeps trying to push his buttons.

Em never knew Suge and wasn't there for their falling out, thus he would be "talkin' about something, I knew nothing about". However, Suge was "all over TV, down talkin a man (Dre), who literally saved my life" and Em felt he now had to answer somewhat to Suge because of how loyal he is to Dre.

Eminem – Spend Some Time Lyrics 19 years ago
After the girls singing say "Spend some time with me", they add "Say that you'll be...mine"

Anyways, this song is Em's way of telling all the "groupie broads", aka the women who just want to have sex with him simply because he is Eminem, to actually be with him for a while and see if she likes it.

He, Obie, Stat and 50 are telling the women that they should get to know the real them, rather than their rapper personas, before they want to be with them for a long period of time.

I also think it's a revenge song for gold digging women who "chase" rappers to get them in bed and hope to score a big payday. 50's line ("Why talk, when suckin' my dick's the real career move?") and ("Said she an inspiriing actress, she do videos for practice...yeah yeah, you know how many times I done heard that shit?") are perfect for the situtation presented here.

They are saying that if all the women want is sex, fine that's all they'll get and there is no way that they'll be trapped into staying with some ho like what is spoke of in the song.

South Park – Everyone Knows, It's Butters! (from The Butters Show) Lyrics 19 years ago
This person left out the best part of the lyrics! For shame!

Every time after the line "Everyone knows it's Butters!", Butters himself comes in and says "That's me!"

Also, the line is-

"And he goes to petting zoos
He loves John Al-way (Butters: "EL-WAY")"
