Iron & Wine – Southern Anthem Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is really beautiful, but I have no idea what it means. I can't tell if he's criticizing the south's "bible belt" theology or what. And then he throws in "freedom" every now and then...hmmmm. I wonder what it means?

It's still a beautiful song though.

Pedro the Lion – Bad Diary Days Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, so the question is "What does this song mean to you?" So, that's what I'm going to answer. I know it's not what it exactly means, but this is how I've always interpreted it.

Knowing Bazan is a Christian, I always first assume a spiritual undertone in his songs. Many of his lyrics are spiritual concerning his relationship with Christ - of course, everyone knows that. Anyway, because marriage is a symbol of Christ loving believers (Eph. 5:25), I usually interpret this song as a Christian abandoning (or cheating on) Christ. We cheat on Him everyday, don't we?

Pedro the Lion – Almost There Lyrics 19 years ago
Bright Eyed Girl, you are not alone! I don't listen to some PTL songs (such as "Rapture" and "Backwoods Nation") because the lyrics cross the line in my opinion. Some of Bazan's lyrics have become a stumbling block (see Romans 14:13) for some people (including myself). I simply don't listen to the songs that I believe to be dishonoring to God. Knowing that Bazan is a Christian (as evidence in most of his songs), I am sure that he would not want to be a stumbling block (causing someone to sin) to any Christian, and so I suppose he sees many of his songs as musical allegory or simply art. However, in the Christian spectrum, art still should have boundaries, and it should not place impure thoughts in one's mind.

So, considering the lyrics to this song... It's not a stumbling block to me since I do not struggle with such despair leading to drug use. But I have friends who would struggle with this song. A Christian friend of mine refuses to listen to Bright Eyes now since it brings back a flood of darkness he use to live in before coming to Christ.

However, I wonder if the "you" is God -- refusing to let him "shoot up" which, in my opinion, implies a refusal of letting the character in the song fall into a dark despair or depression.

Christians must make choices about the songs they listen to. It's hard to sacrifice great-sounding music, but we must consider that honoring God is more pleasurable (yes, pleasurable!) than the pleasure of listening to music (see Psalm 16:11).

So, it is difficult at times to find out when lyrics are considered ungodly and dishonoring to God. It's something that must be prayerfully considered between God and believer.

John and Charles Wesley's mother once said, "Would you judge the lawfulness of a pleasure? Take this rule: Whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of conscience, obscures your vision of God, or takes away the relish of spiritual things, or increases the authority of your body over your mind -- that is sin."

So, perhaps that is a rule Christians can use to discern what God would have them listen to.

Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. "

Perhaps that would help in discerning what Christians should listen to.

Any thoughts?

Sufjan Stevens – Vito's Ordination Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I believe it is about God having a plan to be a Father to His Children (Christians). I think when he says "Only wear your clothes; I wear them too; I wear your shoes; and your jacket too" it refers to God coming down in human form as Christ (John 1:1, 14). "I've made amends; we should be father and son" means that because of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, God made amends (in the sense that we are counted righteous in Christ by faith in Christ) so that we can come to God with full access. Therefore for Christians, He's our Father, and we are His Sons.

That's how I've interpreted it because Sufjan's lyrics often have a Christian undertone and meaning.

Sufjan Stevens – To Be Alone with You Lyrics 19 years ago
It is about Jesus, Allthearmsweneed. On the cross, Jesus showed the perfect example of what love is. The cross provides access to God. There is no other way we could even pray to God without having a relationship with Christ - a believe and faith in Him. When Sufjan says "They took your clothes" , it is describing when the Roman soldiers took Jesus' clothes right before He was crucified (see Romans 19:23-24).

In response to the line "You gave up a wife and a family" , Sufjan is trying to talk about the humanity of Christ. He was both fully human and fully God (see John 10:30). Hebrews 4:15 says that Jesus was tempted in -every- way - therefore He was tempted sexually, but He never sinned. A lot of times people have a picket-fence house dream of a family with 2.5 children and a dog and a cat, but Jesus chose a much harder life. And for one reason - to accompliish salvation for those who would believe in Him.

In response to "You gave up your ghost", Sufjan speaks of the Holy Spirit. Because of the finished work on the cross, Christians have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

"The tree" is another word for the cross since it was made out of the wood from trees.

Allthearmsweneed, I hope this helps to relieve your confusion.

Coldplay – Green Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
The song is, do doubt, originally created for a woman who had green eyes. As a Christian, in my daily quiet time with God, I like to change "Green Eyes" to "Jesus" when I play my guitar in my personal worship. It's a beautiful song, and instead of placing my trust in a person, I'd like to place it in Christ. =) When I met Christ, "I came here with a load, and it feels so much lighter now I met you." Fits perfectly. =)
