Elliott Smith – Amity Lyrics 19 years ago
I guess that came across as being rude, but what I guess I ment was I wouldn't have ever thought of it in the song as being a name. NishFets can name their kid whatever they want, and it's pretty and all, but I was reffering to Noyes thinking it was the name of the girl the song was about. I just never would have thought amity was a name.

Elliott Smith – Let's Get Lost Lyrics 19 years ago
I doubt there is really any hidden meaning behind this little song. I think it's just that he's realized he's not getting anywhere and that his relationships aren't working, but he's going to keep going until he finds this beautiful place. Any other tune, other than this poppy white album beatles-esque, would make this song be so depressing, but it's actually kind of optomistic if you think about it.

Elliott Smith – Let's Get Lost Lyrics 19 years ago
This song probably doesn't really have a hidden meaning or anything, it's probably him feeling like he screws up every relationship he ever has, like "burning every bridge that i cross." I thinke the Beatles-esqe (white album) guitar is so perfect for this sweet little song, and with any other tune it would be horribly depressing, but it's actually kind of optomistic. Like he's realized he can't maintain a relationship, but he'll keep going until he finds the perfect relationship.

Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree also that this song is about the mental facility. Everyone tells you they understand when really they don't, because they've never witnessed everything he has. And even if they had, it still isn't the same.
Also, on the new album when he sings the song Memory Lane (a song I also think is about the mental hospital and his abusive stepfather) he says "they kick you in the head and send you back to bed" and I can immagine this is alot like them upping your depression meds and just telling you to settle down.

amity isn't a name... it means peaceful relations.
I think it is about someone (himself, or a girl) who just isn't satisfied and can't be peaceful.

Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics 19 years ago
Alot of people think that this song is about suicide and I really don't think it is. I think it is about putting his old life behind him and moving on, and promising himself "this is not what I'm like" and he's saying goodbye.
When he sings "really I just wanna dance" it gives me the chills, because Elliott loved to dance! Nobody knows that though, because the media portrays him as this depressed guy all the time, but he was a normal person who just "couldn't get things right." His friends remember him for his love of dancing, and he also loved to do the robot :-)

Elliott Smith – Pictures of Me Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with your perfect verse.. I think thtis song is deffinatly about the media, weather its literally pictures or just ideas that the magazines portray him as depressed. I read an article once when he said he hated being labeled as "depressing music" and it was just so they could paint a picture of the kind of music he was so it could sell easier.

Elliott Smith – Pitseleh Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, this song sounds like a love that just never worked because Elliott was too down on himself and he thought he just was never worthy of her. He talks about keeping something quiet from her, and it seems like he wouldn't let his true self shoe becaue he was just too worried she wouldnt love him. So this song is basically a break up, telling her he doesn't deserver her and he says "give up the thing you love" I think he really does want to be with her, but he thinks he's doing it for her sake cause he can't be her "puzzle peices"
this is truly sad, I cant immagine any girl not wanting to be with such an incredible man :-)

Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics 19 years ago
Cherylanne... Haystack charm around your neck= lots of people wear crosses or indian charms around their neck like a neclace that are hollow on the inside and have some kind of emergency stash of whatever their "cure" may be (heroin, coke, anythinig) that they keep on them. It sounds like his is empty, and in desperate need for a quick fix but in no state to get to wheere he needs to be. The whole song sounds like a big struggle just to get to where he can get his smack because he can't function (physically or mentally) without it. And as he's going, he's just thinking about "needle in the hay" to get the motivation to get there. His friend is being dumb and won't let him get any money and he's claiming he gets good marks so everyone shoudl leave him alone, I think he is reffering to his friends who have on occasion tried to corner him and confront him about his drug problem. He always talked about in articles how he hated that.

Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with Marshemellow... and SMP, you should check out http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/esmithaut1.html it has the total autopsy report and it says that alot of the evidence is atypical to suicide. I'm not saying he was murdered, I really don't know what I think.
But alot of you are missing the point that Elliott didn't write this song anytime soon before he killed himself. The song was probably written somewhere around six months before the song was actually recorded... if you know how the whole recording process works, and like hemptimes says, he has been playing this song live for a long time. And if he did kill himself, it was obviously an impulse because there are better ways to kill yourself than stabbing yourself in the chest... twice...
But oh my word, when you hear Jennifer Chiba's voice in the background after he pleads for someone to give him a good reason not to do it... Ahh, I get chills just thinking about it.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 19 years ago
I also think Elliott was too subtle to be talking about something like LA in a song like this. I can just immagine him meeting up with someone and they are trying to convince him that drugs will truly "satisfy" him. I don't think it's about an addiction, I think it's about the beginning when you still shoot up to fulfil your "wishes," not because you need it to get by.

Elliott Smith – Cupid's Trick Lyrics 19 years ago
Elliott Smith is qouoted in Spin Magazine saying, "I've written alot of stuff being on something. Drinking or doing drugs doesn't make it any easier, but it's differient, you know?... that song, 'Cupids Trick' on Either/Or- the rock song? I made that up while in a state, and I have no idea what I was talking about. It made perfect sense to me at the time, but now it's just a bunch of words."

Elliott Smith – 2:45 AM Lyrics 19 years ago
A few times in Elliott's life he had friends confront him about his drug and alcohol abuse. Right before this album was recorded, he had a huge episode where his girlfriend or best friend or something, and a guy who was working on his record with him, cornered him in a hotel room in Chicago. I always looked at this song as a kind of "fuck you" to them, because he said in an interview the confrontation just made him mad and he denied having a problem and then headed off for the bar.
