Linkin Park – Wretches And Kings Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about control, mostly governmental, and the idea that people have been deceived and manipulated. The song is an anthem against it. It's pretty easy to see within the context of the lyrics, I mean basically that first monologue sets it all up. Other than government I don't see what they would be referencing. That's my take on it anyway.... Seems pretty straight-forward to me. |
Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics | 16 years ago |
All of this song is about him visualizing himself have a drug overdose. I think that Elliott knew he was going to kill himself, but he figured he would never have enough guts to do it intentionally (or in the moment), instead he thought he would do it from a drug overdose. When he says: "I've seen the movie And I know what happens" The next verse is the 'happy ending': "It's Christmas time And the needles on the tree A skinny Santa is bringing something to me His voice is overwhelming But his speech is slurred And I only understand every other word" The song is obviously about his addiction as well: But I don't care if I fuck up (not kill himself in an overdose) I'm going on a date With a rich white lady (cocaine to come back up and shoot heroin again) Ain't life great? |
Elliott Smith – Angel in the Snow Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"I'd say you make a perfect Angel in the snow" A girl so beautiful she is only thought of in an innocent way-- in reference to children "playing in the snow". "All crushed out on the way you are Better stop before it goes too far Don't you know that I love you? Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life That fell down here to lay beside you" Potentially this is a line about him being so crushed on the person he loves, but he loves her so much that he can't communicate it and is afraid to "go to far", and that she doesn't understand that he loves her, and often times he can't communicate so he is "a still life to fall beside" the woman he can't understand. "Don't you know that I love you? Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life Only a frozen still life That fell down here to lay beside you" He feels that he is the only person that can get to her, but he's so confused within himself that he can't do much but "lay beside" her~ |
Elliott Smith – Angel in the Snow Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Okay, I'm posting 2 comments, one through the view of drugs, the other through the view of love. I see this song through two angles so I'm going to expose them both: "I'd say you make a perfect Angel in the snow All crushed out on the way you are Better stop before it goes too far" (cocaine- all crushed up in the form of powder to snort.... better stop before "it goes too far".) "Don't you know that I love you? Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life That fell down here to lay beside you" The drug is so powerful that it feels like he is a corpse beside it, even without using he just knows the harsh reality of the drug and how the world comes to life with him using. "I love you" is a reference to his addiction. Don't you know that I love you? Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life Only a frozen still life That fell down here to lay beside you Potentially a line about his addiction and how he continuously feels like a "still life that fell down" beside the drug, comparing himself to the amazingly lively intoxicating feeling from the drug. |

Elliott Smith – St. Ides Heaven Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Everything is exactly right When I walk around here drunk every night With an open container from 7-11" Honestly these words hooked me instantly... I loved the whole song unconsciously after that and didn't realize that "high on amphetamines" was even in the song until my friend I showed Elliott's music to showed me. As soon as I found that out it gave the song a whole new light. I think I love it more now~ |
Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Go off to sleep in the sunshine I don't want to see the day when it's dying" This line initially comes off as: He doesn't want to see the day ending because it's sad. A day you'll never get back, the closing, the climax, etc. However I imagine this as: He's sleeping through the sunshine-- Daylight is a metaphor for happiness throughout the whole song... The day is dying, he loves the dark.... dark being the metaphor for his depression. Such an obvious song about depression but overshadowed by all of the other catches. |
Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
After reading all about Elliott's life through various interviews and facts, it seems to me that this song may have been written to himself. "Haven't laughed this hard in a long time I better stop now before I start crying" I see this as possibly as his own response to his suicide. He's laughing because it had finally happened, he repeatedly spoke openly of suicide and was into heavy drug use. ___________________ "She's a sight to see She's good to me I'm already somebody's baby" Elliott's ex-roommate Sean Crogan stated in an interview with Blender magazine that him and Elliott "were both total depression junkies" Crogan also said in that interview that “We would go out together and sit at the bar and cry. A lot. Young Man’s Disease — that’s what Elliott’s dad called it.” I think his baby is depression, turning away happiness. "You're wonderful And it's beautiful But I'm already somebody's baby" ___________ "You don't deserve to be lonely But those drugs you got won't make you feel better Pretty soon you'll find it's the only Little part of your life you're keeping together" He doesn't want to be depressed-- he doesn't want it but he loves and hates it at the same time. Possibly he feels comfort in being sad but at the same time he wants an alternative(drugs) to his acceptance of depression. His drug use doesn't make him feel better but he's addicted, and he realizes that it's all he has left. He doesn't operate normally when he's craving drugs all of the time-- he doesn't feel anything but the need for more. He knows he needs to have constant use and it will be impossible to make him feel normal/sober. This is just how I interpret the song now that I know more about Elliott. It is probably all false it just seemed to all click for me. Make of it what you will..... |
