U2 – 40 Lyrics 19 years ago
Its all very good to sit and debate the meaning of '40', but don't give Bono too much credit for writing it. It is from the Bible after all. And Bono has just 'rocked' it a bit. Being from the Bible it obviously still has many meanings and relevence for today

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 19 years ago
Hoops- who are the Prods? Adam and Edge?
I always considered this one of their less religious songs! Each to their own!
Wether or not it does have a religious element, which it might, I feel your interpretation of it's flawed. the Gospels make it clear that the disciples didn't think he would rise again- they were hiding, believing they'd lost everything. You may be right about the walking on water tho. I dunno.
I don't think people can say it's about anyone thing - U2 songs sem to hit on about 3 different levels. This one-heroine, love, Lord Jesus. and probably some other random stuff from the genius Bono's head

HvNLyFaTHr. I like your theory on the Jesus meaning....but U2 are not a Christian band!!!!!Bono himself has said theyre not! He just likes the religious imagery. I know someone who wasted a large portion of his time writing bok on how U2 are Christians. waste of time. being Irish the obviously have a rich catholic backgroud. But thats it.

U2 – Pride (In the Name of Love) Lyrics 19 years ago
Azzathoth has clearly just made a bit of a tool of himself - "heroes undone by their erstwhile lovers, much better than Jesus (I don't seem to recall anything in the Gospels about kisses in this context...)" - The Gospel according to Matthew ch 26 v 48+49, the Gospel accorrding to Mark ch 14 v44+45, the Gospel according to Luke ch22 v47+48. That wuld seem to be 3 of the 4 Gospels that mention it.
Peek-a-boo is spot on, you cant pin this song to any one historical figure, it's for them all.
In response to Fifth element- Chrst came not to justify his Fathers will. He was justifying his people to his Father- like in a court scene; someone is justified because they havn't done anything wrong. Christ took his people wrong on himself so that God could justify us! Why did he do this? He is a God of undeserving, sacrificial kindness. or Love as some people like to call it.

U2 – Grace Lyrics 19 years ago
Wernerkoek.....all very imaginative, but generally rubbish. This song is indeed about grace, as you've said, and to a degree Bono does use the image of a woman to bring across his message. But Once again Bono is drawing heavily on Christian influences for his lyrics. Grace, as Bono says, is the thought that changed the world- Grace is the word used to describe God's undeserving love and goodness to the human race, who although being created by him have rebelled and turned to their own ways. This grace is shown by the fact that the world still exists and by the acts of goodness we see between men, but primarily by the death of God the Son, who was punished/forsaken by God the father, for the rebellion (sin) of anyone who would believe that he took their punishment and would submit their life to him.
'Grace makes beauty out of ugly things' by restoring the ugly things of things world -You and me- to the relationship we are meant to have with God.
'She takes the blame, She covers the shame, Removes the stain' of our sin and gives us the perfectness+ purity in God's sight that Jesus has. And why did God go to all this trouble to restore people who had rejected him? Because he is gracious!
What a thought!
